They shape how we perceive ourselves, how we navigate the world, and how we find meaning in our existence. Scars ^can^ be sneaky little things. Sometimes you might not even know they’re there. Other times, they can cause pain, discomfort and even trigger the stress response in your nervous system. Scanning for danger or safety? Let’s talk about neuroception. This term, crafted by Stephen Porges, captures the workings of our internal surveillance system. It serves us by constantly scanning our environment for cues of safety and danger. This neuroceptive mechanism operates beneath our conscious awareness, yet its influence permeates every aspect of our lives. When our neuroception detects signs of safety – whether it be a reassuring smile, a calming scent, or a familiar voice – it signals to our nervous system that it is safe to engage with the world. In this state, we feel a sense of ease and openness, allowing us to move through life with confidence and resilience. Conversely, when our neuroception perceives threats or danger – perhaps in the form of a loud noise, a tense encounter, or a perceived sense of vulnerability – it triggers a physiological responses designed to protect us from harm. Our heart rate quickens, our muscles tense, and our senses become hyperalert, preparing us for fight, flight, or freeze. Understanding the role of neuroception in our daily lives offers insights into how we navigate the world around us. However sometimes it gets stuck or misinterprets, seeing danger through a past lens (often from trauma), which can leave us in perpetual fight/fight aka anxiety or anger or shut down. And finding safety in these states can often feel impossible! Awareness is the first step towards reclaiming control over our neuroception. By recognising when our internal surveillance system is stuck in a loop of past experiences, we can begin to challenge those perceptions and create new, healthier patterns of response. Our nervous system processes information for us for what we already know and even what we may not be conscious of right away. Depending on our individual circumstances, our nervous system may be sensitive and in a state of dysregulation. When the time comes to heal the nervous system, questions about what to do or how to do this may have us feeling scared and with no answers to start or proceed. It is true that when our nervous system is dysregulated (let us remember that this dysregulation often times stems from prolonged exposure to such things like stress, trauma, and other dysfunctions), we may seek more of what is already known to us even if it's not ideal or what we truly desire outside of what caused the dysregulation. We may seek that that is already known because we do not know any different or don't know how to strive for different. Comfort and safety should not be unfamiliar to any of us, but unfortunately, it is to some of us. Redefining what comfort and safety mean to us can be healing. You may already know this? But, our body helps us cope with stress by numbing pain and emotions, even joy. This is a survival tactic and can linger during chronic stress or trauma, prioritising past threats. Disconnecting from emotions and bodily sensations saves energy for self-protection but can lead to feeling disconnected from ourselves. When we feel safe again, buried emotions resurface. Safety says “no need to run, fight, or hide. This moment can exist as it is.” Allowing space for emotions and sensations to emerge. And when it does, all parts of us get some breathing room that they may have not had before... Notice these feelings—it’s your body finally having room to feel them. Perhaps one of the more challenging lessons I am learning is how to SLOW DOWN. My coworkers actually joke with me about the pace at which I sometimes run around in circles. The difference between me now, and me years ago, is that I can feel myself running around in circles. And, with this awareness, I can implement the tools I need in order to bring my nervous system back into balance. Had I not intentionally (and consistently) practiced healing my nervous system, I would have had no idea what it felt like to be in a “safe” place or to have a healthy baseline. This is why creating space and intentionally slowing down, is so incredibly important on your healing journey. We have to establish a new and baseline so that we know where to return to. It keeps the engine (your brain & nervous system) always on the go with stress hormones like cortisol & adrenaline. This results in a high-performance mode, ever-ready for fight or flight.⁠ 👉 Energy Depletion: This mode doesn’t come free - it consumes vast amounts of energy, which can surfacing as a tiredness you can’t shake off.⁠ ⁠ When you start to feel safe, your body and mind begin shifting gear from ‘overdrive’ to ‘idle’, striving to return to a state of homeostasis or balance. Some mid-week reminders to help you get through the rest of the week! One of my favourite places to practice Sophrology is in nature. It helps me feel grounded. The sights, sounds, smells and textures of the outdoors act as anchors, helping me to stay focused during my Sophrology practice and reducing my mind's tendency to wander. In fact, studies have shown that spending time in nature can lower blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels, so it's no wonder why it's the perfect pair to the relaxation and empowering techniques of Sophrology. Here are some tips for practising Sophrology in nature: 🌿 Find a quiet spot in nature that feels peaceful and inviting. 🌿 Pay attention to the natural sounds around you, such as birds singing or leaves rustling in the breeze. 🌿 Feel the ground beneath your feet and the sun (or shade) on your skin. Fears, insecurities, and trauma are all energy transfers that people can pass over to us. With these transfers, our own trauma responses can surely manifest in different ways. Fight. Flight. Freeze. Fawn. For some of us, confusion can exist because there is all that we already are conscious about, but then, there is also what lies in our subconscious of what we do, what we think, and how we feel when someone is projecting their fear into our life. What even is the nervous system anyways? Our bodies are tracking our sense of safety all the time The different elements of this alarm system working together are called the Autonomic Nervous System. Most of us aren’t aware of the process consciously. But we can be! Your level of threat or safety is registered in the body as physical sensations first, then the mind names this as story and/or emotions If you are mostly safe and feel mostly safe most of the time, your body has a chance to process/digest, rest & repair. You feel clear, protected, energized and connected (most of the time) However, there are lots of reasons why your alarm system might not be optimally primed. Too much stress, trauma, not enough loving community, not enough movement and expression all lead to a system that is firing distress more than safety. Starting a new journal feels like a new season this weekend. 📓 Did you know that naming your feelings can help calm your nervous system? I love journaling for self discovery and reflection. It’s been my most consistent discipline over the past two decades that I always come back to because of the energy I derive from it. Sometimes I journal 3 sentences and other times it’s a whole page. I was gratefully gifted a ticket to yesterday’s @owakenbreathwork event and funny story, 4 years ago I was also gifted a ticket to an owaken breathwork event but I couldn’t make that one as I was working on the day. I guess I was really really meant to go to one of their events 🫠 It was so serendipitious for me to be gifted this ticket and the theme of the event was so fitting to me right now. It was EXACTLY what my nervous system needed. My takeaway from yesterday is that if you’re open to the possibilities of life, and follow the breadcrumbs to lead you to wherever it is you are meant to go, trust that you are being guided and you are on the right path. As Helle said yesterday, you can choose to fed by possibility rather than limitation. The event was amazing and I have followed these guys for years and always been very inspired by them. So thank you for holding such an amazing space for us all. BE A REBEL AND REST ✌️ Our culture and society value productivity above all else, above wellbeing and health, happiness, time with family and friends, etc. and without even realising it, productivity becomes the central value that we plan and build our lives around. This is despite the fact many of us would not say ‘productivity’ is in our top 5, or even top 10, values. Therefore, to prioritise time for rest and play is a rebellious act. In rest, we are saying that we know our inherent value and worth is not attached to our levels of productivity. To slow down and rest is to value ourselves, our true self worth, and is the foundation for creating a life that truely aligns with our values.
