In my last post, I talked about dissociation. Taking this one step further, dissociation is a state of dis-embodiment and this is where it gets interesting 🤔 Disembodiment is feeling as if you are not present in your body (spacing out or feeling that you are observing your body from outside of it), unsafe in your body, out of control of your body, or experiencing unpleasant feelings in your body. When you are disembodied, you may not feel parts of your physical body or you may have difficulty orienting your physical body in space. This can happen as a survival method during or as a learned pattern after a traumatic event. As you can dissociate from a body part, there is great relevance in terms of living with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. The pain is intense and overwhelming to your system (my POV: this is a traumatic event) so of course your body wants to protect you and does this by dissociation. You become disembodied. For me personally, there was a sensation of hollow numbness in my lower abdomen - like a void space - and that my lower and upper body were not connected. Obviously, there was a lot of intense sensation underneath this protective numbness but it was too much to feel. You may be experiencing similar. Protection takes priority over healing. You are unable to access your healing potential and thus reconnecting with your body is essential so you can feel safe in your body. You then move out of survival mode and are able to let go of coping mechanisms that may have become maladaptive. You are then able to heal. Becoming re-embodied however isn't quite so simple. Our bodies are AMAZING! Check out this fantastic graphic from @theradiologistpage to get a better look at the inside of your body & all the things we consider when it comes to pelvic pain. When treating pelvic pain, we like to think in terms layers. We do this while remembering that each layer influences the next with the understanding that no system works alone. While there are so many take-aways in this photo, we are going to focus in on one- the relationship of the psoas muscle to the organs in the abdomen and the bones it surrounds. 💡 The psoas muscle attaches directly on to the front part of the low back. When this muscle is shortened for an extended time as with sitting, it can create compression of the vertebrae, irritating the lumbar spine discs and nerve roots contributing to back &/ or pelvic pain. 💡 Your psoas muscle is the bridge between your diaphragm and your pelvic floor. Tension in this system can lead to restrictions in your diaphragm’s range of motion, making it difficult to take a deep breath also causing increased tension in the pelvic floor. Try these gentle exercises to stoke its fire and promote healthy motility: 1. Sidelying right side up exposing the rib cage and breathing into the ribs, helpful to place a hand and, or folded blanket, yoga block on the rib cage to feel the breath 2. Standing dynamic twists - swinging back and forth, better yet placing a dowel it the crux of the elbows behind the back and then swinging to encourage the twist 3. 👀If want your glutes and your quads to work better, if you want them to be stronger, if you want your knees to feel buttery… find your FEET! For your foot to connect with your hips, it needs to do a few things: Flatten out and spread (pronate),so your shin can move comfortably over it, and your hip can turn a bit inside (internally rotate). This movement helps push force from your foot to your hip. Focus on how your foot touches the ground. Feeling the sensation of the knuckle of your big toe, little toe, and heel on the ground. Imagine driving your foot through the floor, feeling your midfoot flatten and spread across the floor.. this will help generate power up to the hips. This feels incredible once you have it. If you’re hypermobile, I recommend you work on this, especially focusing on the big toe and the arch 😘

Here comes a little reminder: Most of the time we carry a lot of weight with us. We are holding onto thoughts, things, that we fear or worry about. We keep feelings inside us, that we do not allow ourselves to express … All this load gets stuck within us, because we do not really let it go. At some point we can feel it in our physical body. So here comes the invitation: >>>> Why not allowing this emotional, mental and physical load, you carry, to directly sink down – through your body, into your legs and feet, letting it release into the ground, when you walk? It is an easy and yet powerful exercise, that you can do any time. Did you ever try? Why not start today? Release your weight and let it go! Do not keep it inside you! Let it move through you, and allow yourself to experience these collective pains, that all these worries and fears are. But do not keep them with you! Allow yourself to live in ease & become light! I often hear "...but they never hit me". A person doesn't have to physically lay a hand on you for their actions to be considered violent. Punching a wall is violent. Destroying property is violent. Throwing something across the room is violent. It doesn't matter if it's a pillow or if it's a plate - your nervous system is still likely to perceive it as a threat. That being said, there IS help for those who struggle with anger and outbursts... At AYCP, we help clients create a "pause" button, so that the time between stimulus and reaction gets bigger. This is for anyone who struggles with big emotions, regardless of what those big emotions are. We also help clients recognize what exactly is going on in their bodies at the time this happens to validate that a violent act does not necessarily imply someone is a violent person. There really is a difference between who you are and how you react. I don't think anyone would want to be judged on the worst thing or the most shameful thing they did. In the moment, it's VERY hard to press that pause button, which is why I ask clients, "What did you do afterwards?" Was there a repair? Was accountability taken? Did you reach out for help?
