Herb 🌿 harvest What plants can you spot ? We were a little late in the season, establishing our herb garden though its been abundant enough to provide enough to cook with. I thought I'd pick a selection of some of what's available and experiment with the dehydrator. I know you can use a microwave to dry herbs - this is a no microwave household I know I can dry them in bundles hanging upside down, this makes it easy to use the herbs as you need them. I'll have a think, if I can rig something in the kitchen, though there will be including a drying rack installed above the laundry sink when that area's being remodelled.. I'm sure that will work equally well for herbs as clothes. For now, it's the vintage dehyrator that will get a workout. We'd had a frost blanket over our herb 🌿 garden... thankfully We missed the first frost earlier this week, though I certainly felt the one early this morning. Having an early mark this afternoon meant being able to fold up the frost blanket and harvest some soft herbs, including the basil Which meant pesto and pasta for tonight's dinner, with plenty for lunch over the weekend and a few containers frozen for future easy meals. Tomatoes are in the ground! I compared the planting date to last year, and even though this winter was more mild than the winter before, I planted them only two days earlier. The days have been nice and warm this spring with nights reaching low 50’s but I figured since the lows at night are only a couple of hours and there is no sign of frost, I’ll go ahead and transplant them. So far I have planted Black Vernissage, Dark Galaxy, Romas, Amish Paste, Ghezante and cherry tomatoes. I’m so ready for homegrown 🍅
While some of the haskap berries are starting to ripen it hasn’t been easy for this bush. I’m not sure if the extreme weather we experienced in January is a factor but it hasn’t been easy. I’ve been constantly battling pest infestation on it and refuse to use chemicals or sprays on anything in the farm. More plants for our beneficial insects are ready and waiting to be planted… whenever this farmer has time to do it. 😬 With the last frost behind us 🙊 insects are emerging and they are HUNGRY. I’m already seeing damage from caterpillars and flea beetles around the farm, not a lot, but some. Some is ok! The backbone of ecology is diversity and balance. Without a pest insect, a benficial might not have anything to eat, balance. And no one likes a diet of only one food, diversity. These perennial plants will help restore balance by giving food and safety to the existing beneficials here as well as attract more and differing native insect species. Transplanted some Little Marvel Peas today! Nighttime temperatures have still been quite cool so they will keep living in the cold frame for now 🌱 Direct seeded many Early Wonder Beets and transplanted a few beet seedlings started a few weeks ago in a make shift greenhouse 👍🏻 In the corner it’s hard to see but I finally found a Woodland Violet at a nursery. Hopefully I can find many many more. they are a delicate sweet flavour & can be eaten fresh, or dried for herbal teas and baking. Lady bugs galore! 🐞🐞 They're currently doing a great job trying to keep the mites under control. We don't spray the bad bugs here so we do get caterpillar, slug, mite and thrip damage here & there but we don't want to hurt our incredibly huge population of good bugs. 3rd pic is of a Leopard slug that we have soo many of here in Gellibrand!! Autumn pickings. I’m a huge fan of this @kingsseedsnz 1kilo cabbage for the warmer months. It is slow bolt, and the crunchy texture cannot be beaten. It lasts for ages in the fridge and can be used as bok choy in a stir fry or as lettuce in a salad. We also LOVE @kingsseedsnz organic cobra runner beans, and they are the only bean we grow now. Prolific, delicious and freeze without blanching. Am stoked with my capsicums too, as I have definitely foiled slugs with my tricks. Sprinkled grown cayenne pepper around the base of each plant together with lime, and I also sprinkled DE on top of each capsicum as that’s where the little blighters like to burrow inside. For the first year I can leave them to turn red without worrying. The tomatoes have been amazing - we have frozen 8kg for processing in the winter. I grew my own cloud ☁️ - Made of cotton! I wasn’t sure if it would work in the North, but I attribute my success from starting seeds early indoors and then later bringing the plants inside at the end of the growing season when the temperatures dropped. The bolls were able to mature on the stem and eventually the soft white tufts of fluff appeared. It was a fun experiment I’ll continue into this year with all the seeds I harvested ☺️

Last weekend I needed to make space for planting the sprouted choko And decided to dig up the new potatoes I had growing in the raised bed. This allowed the bed to be moved and placed on the ground up closer to the current beds, adding to the start of the permanent beds. I was able to plant the choko and some romanesco broccoli 🥦 and red cabbage seeds last saturday. We were thrilled to see both the broccoli and red cabbage sprout into seedlings. Meanwhile, the new potatoes made for a brilliant and delicious dinner boiled and served with a cottage cheese and sour cream garlicy onion dill sauce. I’ve been waiting for the right moment to start a farm. I have had a very rigid idea of what I wanted my farm to be and not be. I never set out to start as a microfarm. I dreamed of acres and acres of land. A farm that principled itself on no dig practices & creation of permaculture and food forestry. Unfortunately the right moment hasn’t arrived. Whether it’s been timing, interest rates or outside interferences that have tripped me up each time it seemed possible. That has left me waiting for 3 years. I can’t wait any longer. So I’m starting at a micro farming level, like I said, it’s an itty bitty farm with big farm energy…for now 😉 Today I am posting my official “before” pictures.
