So I cheated and I took some pictures from a book of Edward Hopper’s paintings that was in the library at Cutchogue last summer, saving it for the spooky season. Was Hopper the first person to give the Second Empire style houses and buildings with Mansard roofs a gloomy, gothic quality? I’m curious as I am keen to know how this style of house went from being an elegant Victorian mansion signifying status and wealth to one that represented something haunted, fallen and lost? Hopper’s painting was done in 1925 and titled The House by the Railroad. Charles Adams grew up in Westfield, a New Jersey town that had many homes which had Mansard roofs. Was he the first to make the Mansard House an iconic part of American Horror imagery? (See typical picture of Victorian house from Westfield.) Was the home in Psycho the first to use this kind of house in a horror movie? Or was it Joseph Mugnaini who drew and painted Second Empire mansions, particular for the jacket art of Ray Bradbury’s novels? (Last two are further watercolors by Hopper, on the theme.) I don’t have any answers, by the way.
