Once Upon a Time in the West is a 1968 epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone, who co-wrote it with Sergio Donati based on a story by Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci and Leone. It stars Henry Fonda, cast against type as the villain, Charles Bronson as his nemesis, Jason Robards as a bandit and Claudia Cardinale as a newly widowed homesteader. The widescreen cinematography was by Tonino Delli Colli and the acclaimed film score was by Ennio Morricone. After directing The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Leone decided to retire from Westerns and aimed to produce his film based on the novel The Hoods, which eventually became Once Upon a Time in America. However, Leone accepted an offer from Paramount Pictures providing Henry Fonda and a budget to produce another Western. He recruited Bertolucci and Argento to devise the plot of the film in 1966, researching other Western films in the process. After Clint Eastwood turned down an offer to play the movie's protagonist, Bronson was offered the role. During production, Leone recruited Donati to rewrite the script due to concerns over time limitations. The original version by the director was 166 minutes when it was first released on December 21st 1968. This version was shown in European cinemas, and was a box-office success. For the US release on May 28th 1969, the film was edited down to 145 minutes by Paramount and was a financial flop. The film is the first installment in Leone's Once Upon a Time trilogy, followed by Duck, You Sucker! and Once Upon a Time in America, though the films do not share any characters in common. In 2009, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Movie: Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) Director: Sergio Leone Rating: 10/10 Review: Once Upon a Time in the West is a western starring Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, and Claudia Cardinale about a widow whose inherited property is sought by a rich man. It’s been several months since I last watched a western, so I decided to watch one of the greatest of all time. I’m not usually a fan of this genre, mainly because most of its movies are very slow, but I actually really enjoy this film. Yes, it is slow, but each scene is so uniquely crafted that I never get bored. This movie has maybe one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard. Each song is amazing and fits the scenes very well. I especially like Cheyenne’s theme and the last time we hear it—the way it pauses right before he falls to the ground is incredible. Harmonica’s theme is also such a fantastic western song and great for the final showdown. The camerawork is magnificent in all aspects: the framing, the shot composition, the cinematography, it’s all perfect. Lots of moving shots too which is impressive for the 60’s. The acting is top notch and the characters are easy to root for, especially at the very end when you find out Harmonica’s true motivation. The story is pretty good, although maybe slightly confusing if you don’t pay enough attention. I enjoy how there are four main characters with different motivations, and none of them are completely “good” or “evil”. I feel like Cheyenne had nothing to do at the end though and he should’ve been involved in the final showdown. The very first scene is phenomenal even having such little dialogue. The writing is great, many lines of dialogue are just really good. Maybe some of the scenes are a bit too long or could’ve been cut out entirely, but that’s really my only complaint. Oh and I also think Harmonica should’ve said the name of his brother at the end. Would’ve been cool. But yeah, if you like westerns or classic films you should definitely watch this at some point in your life. If you’re a casual viewer, be warned that this movie is almost three hours long. I give Once Upon a Time in the West a 10/10 overall.

Director Sergio Leone flew to the United States and met with Fonda, who asked why he was wanted for the film. Leone replied, "Picture this: the camera shows a gunman from the waist down pulling his gun and shooting a running child. The camera pans up to the gunman's face and...it's Henry Fonda" (until then, with one exception, Fonda had only been cast in "good guy" roles.
