⭐️⭐️ This book follows 3 female patients in a 1700s Paris asylum who’re forced to settle New Orleans to provide wives for colonists. The story spans ~20 years & chapters were quite long, which was a struggle, especially with POV changes & time jumps. I felt like just as I was drawn into a character’s storyline, suddenly we werent jumping 5 years into someone else’s story. I’d have preferred less POVs & the chance to get to know characters more closely in their day-to-day lives rather than just the highlight reel. There’s sapphic rep, but I felt weird about how the relationships ended up (MILD SPOILER: 2 queer POV characters have feelings for other characters throughout the story, & eventually start a romance. There’s a 10-ish year age gap, which doesn’t bother me, but at the start of the book one is 12. 15-20 years have passed, but the idea of getting romantic with someone I knew when they were a child is 🥴) Another bit I was iffy on was the addition of a Native American woman’s POV midway through. She gets only one chapter, where she forms a friendship with one of the French women despite the contentious relationship between their people, & ultimately saves her from an attack on the colony. I would have been more interested to see her POV last the entire book like the others rather than just used to supplement a white character’s. It’s also worth noting that several characters are slave owners, which I get is historically accurate, but the way it was addressed felt off, like a mix of current-day morality snuck in & gave the interactions weird context. Because if a character is “good” enough to think about how these are humans & her equals and should be treated as such, why does she OWN them?! There’s lots of French (duh), but heads up if you do the audiobook in addition to reading: multiple times I thought there were 2 different people doing something, only to realize I’d pronounced a name differently in my American head than the French voice actor. Fully a personal problem, though. All in all, not my favorite historical fiction, but I did learn a lot. Thanks to Harper Perennial & the author for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

𝗣𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟𝗦 𝗯𝘆 𝗝𝗨𝗟𝗜𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗬𝗘 This is authentic historical fiction at its absolute best. Based on true events from the early 1700's, it tells the story of a group of French women, held in a Paris prison for petty crime and mental disorders, who are shipped to New Orleans to become wives for the French settlers. Told over approx 20 years, we follow them from the tumultuous sea voyage to their marriages to men they know nothing about in a land they know nothing about, experience the hardships, and simple joys they find from their friendships, and witness the immense bravery and fortitude they must demonstrate in a foreign land, in a time that does not respect women. Hot off the press, “Pelican Girls” by Julia Mayle was first published in France to rave literary reviews. The consensus from the general public hasn’t been as favorable as it’s received a tepid 3.6 stars on Goodreads. It’s a deeply researched historical fiction tome based on true events that is pretty heady and detailed. So I get it, the book doesn’t go down like a warm buttery croissant. However, if you’re a bit of a history buff and interested in learning about a forgotten storyline, the book is very interesting. In the early 1700s, La Louisiane (aka New France) desperately needs women to help settle the territory. Sending shiploads of “volunteers,” usually Parisian orphans and the incarcerated of child bearing age, to become forced brides of the settlers is the grim solution. Three young women, Charlotte, Petronille and Genevieve, embark on the dangerous voyage and wonder if what lies ahead may be better than what they are leaving behind. Braving illness, pirates, and both horrible and honorable men, they form unlikely friendships and alliances as they brave the new world. 🪶Book Review🪶 PELICAN GIRLS By Julia Malye ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Historical Fiction Pub. 3/5/24 Thank you to @harperbooks for an advanced #gifted copy of this book. “Pelican Girls” by Julia Malye is an epic tale about the founding of New Orleans and the Mississippi River Delta. In the 1720’s, when the French “Company” was establishing trade with North America and began settling in the area, the French sent over brides for the French Traders. These young women, some just girls, either criminals or orphans, were shipped across the ocean and married off. This is their story. I found the premise of this book amazing but the execution faltered for me. I loved the historical facts and the political environment that was weaved into this book. It was obviously well researched. However, I was hoping for more sense of place, the Mississippi Delta being a such a unique area in this country. What these women went through, was truly amazing. The story was told from multiple points of view with a lot of plot lines some that could have been cut and others that could benefit from more development. But the largest issue is I kept feeling like I was missing the action. Chapters jumped over large action scenes but then revisited them as past tense in another point of view. I have my theories of why this decision was made by the author, but caused the booked to slow to a crawl at times. All this said, I did enjoy the book. I feel like this author has a lot of promise as this appears the be her debut book in English. I will be interested to see what she comes out with next. ⁉️ Would you rather be the protagonist of a classic novel stuck in modern times or have to explain social media to a character from a Victorian novel? ___________ #PelicanGirls #bookreviews #historicalfiction #NewOrleans #MississippiRiver #Louisiana #books

🦢BOOK FEATURE🦢 Pelican Girls by Julia Malve Pub Date: 03/05/24 Paris, 1720. La Salpêtrière Hospital is in crisis: too many occupants, not enough beds. Halfway across the world, France's colony in the wilds of North America has space to spare and needs families to fill it. So the director of the hospital rounds up nearly a hundred female “volunteers” of childbearing age—orphans, prisoners, and mental patients—to be shipped to New Orleans. Among this group are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year old orphan, a mute ‘madwoman,’ and an accused abortionist. Charlotte, Pétronille, and Geneviève, along with the dozens of other women aboard La Baleine, have no knowledge of what lies ahead and no control over their futures. Strangers brought together by fate, these brave and fierce young women will face extraordinary adversity—pirates, slavedrivers, sickness, war—but also the private trauma of heartbreak and unrequited love, children born and lost, cruelty and unexpected pleasure, and a friendship forged in fire that will sustain through the years. At once a gorgeously written work of startling depth and emotion and a gripping drama marrying high-seas adventure with pioneer grit, Pelican Girls is a powerful, thought-provoking novel about female friendship and desire and the daunting compromises women are forced to make to survive. Sinossi: Parigi, 1720.

📚BOOK MAIL📚 I’m so excited about the book mail I received from publishers over the last couple weeks! AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SKIN by LAKIESHA CARR (Paperback Avail 2/27/24) @vintageanchorbooks A middle-aged woman feeds slots at a secret, back-room parlor. A new mother descends into devastating postpartum depression. A daughter returns home to join the other women in her family waging spiritual combat with the ghosts of their past. These interconnected generations provide an intimate look at Black womanhood: the grief that is carried within the body and the bonds of love that grant strength. PELICAN GIRLS by JULIA MALYE (Avail 3/5/24) @harperbooks A sweeping epic inspired by the true story of the Baleine Brides: a ship full of young women plucked from a Paris asylum and sent to marry settlers in the Louisiana Territory. Among this group are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year old orphan, a mute ‘madwoman,’ and an accused abortionist. A drama of high-seas adventure, pioneer grit, female friendship, and the compromises made to survive. THE HORSE by WILLY VLAUTIN (Avail 7/30/24) @harperbooks A grizzled man in his sixties, Al survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories. A journeyman musician unable to escape the tragedies of his past, he finds himself teetering on the edge of madness and running out of reasons to go on—until a horse arrives on his doorstep. Is the animal real, or a phantom conjured from imagination? THE TURTLE HOUSE by AMANDA CHURCHILL (Out Now) @harperbooks 25-year-old Lia and her prickly 73-year-old grandmother, Mineko, are sharing a bedroom in the Texas ranching town where Lia grew up and Mineko began her life as a Japanese war bride. The two grow close, sharing late-night conversations. Mineko tells stories of her early life in Japan, of the war that changed everything, and of her two great loves: a man named Akio Sato and an abandoned Japanese country estate they called the Turtle House. ❓Do you know your grandparents’ histories? Did they tell you stories from their past? #anautobiographyofskin #lakieshacarr #pelicangirls #juliamalye #thehorse #willyvlautin #theturtlehouse #amandachurchill #bookstagram

Thanks to my subscription to @typeface_books, last week I picked up this advance reader copy of Pelican Girls by Julia Malye. It’s due for release in March and sounds like a cracker. Here’s the publisher’s blurb: A sweeping epic in the vein of Philipp Meyer’s The Son and Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko and inspired by a true story, this stunning US literary debut captures the never-before-told journey of the Baleine Brides: a ship full of young women plucked from a Paris asylum and sent to marry settlers in North America’s rough Louisiana Territory. Paris, 1720. La Salpêtrière hospital is in crisis: too many occupants, not enough beds. Halfway across the world, France’s colony in the wilds of North America has space to spare and needs families to fill it.

Little Pelican said she would try Nordic skiing with me this weekend when sister was away at a sleepover. Both girls have been dead set against down hill skiing so this was a big win for me and made me so happy. We did a day rental @skibarndurango with the terms if she liked it we could turn it into a season. We where out the for 3.5hours on her first time, only two falls and her saying she wanted to do it again ❤️ Finally have my ski buddy❤️ #pelicangirls #pelicangirlsadventures #mommysheartisfull
