I was beyond thrilled to find Pierre Berton’s The Secret World of Og at my local used book store. It is the 30th anniversary edition from 1991. If you don’t know this book it is a Canadian classic, and one of my favourites as a child. In this fantasy adventure, four children — Penny, the leader; Pamela, her common-sense sister; Peter, whose life's ambition is to become a garbageman; and Patsy, who collects frogs in her pockets — set out in search of their baby brother, Paul, better known as “The Pollywog,” who has vanished mysteriously from their playhouse. If this 1st one ruffles feathers.. good. Truth is, since before Pierre Berton wrote his book in 1967 about virtually the same arguments that are used against the poor, the same arguments have been wrong. THATS why there's all these attempts at making #UBI into something SinISTer like attaching it to the modern equivalent of the "New World Order" theory that started actually before Pierre wrote that book! They hate something, so they lump all the things they hate into a nice, big stupid scrapbook. I'm a sucker for collecting uniform book sets... this is Canadian history writer, Pierre Berton 🇨🇦. What an amazing non-fiction writer he is. His books are full of vivid characters and fascinating events written in a page turning manner. I picked up his history of the Klondike goldrush back in 2011 when we spent a year in Canada, and headed up to the Yukon for a month. What a brilliant book. When we finally traded a backpack for an apartment, I went on to source his other works printed in these uniform editions in 2001 by Anchor Canada. His excellent history of Niagara Falls covers its discovery to dare-devil barrel riders to controversial polluting. There's 2 double bills there, one set covering America's ill-fated invasion of Canada, and the other the building of the great Canadian railway from coast to coast covering characters in political battles and the wild west. Both surprisingly real page turners for me. My Country, Wild Frontier and Prisoners of the North contain mini biographies of Canadian figures. I'm still making my way through the others, which include Canada at war, the great depression and exploration of the Arctic. Canadian literary icon Pierre Berton on guaranteed income (as basic income was called in 1968). I've ordered this book but as a GenX kid whose parents and grandparents had books like The Last Spike and Klondike I was just amazed how not only does his book "The Smug Minority" talk repeatedly on his support of this idea but how, like Thomas Paine with Agrarian Justice, it's one you seem to come upon only after digging. The Greater Victoria Public Library does not have it available (unlike nearly his entire catalog), just like how they didn't have MLK's "Where Do We Go From Here" (also from 1968) available. If it seems like I'm drawing a comparison I am, when I also have been reading a fellow advocates work on how #basicincome, rather than being pushed by those in power, is suppressed by them. There's the well documented case of the Andrew Yang blackout where the #UBI guy just happened to never get mentioned at events where he was, never get mentioned in campaigns when he did the most on the ground campaigning and even have technical issues at a debate. The progressive movement of the 60s saw it. On this day: author, historian, and broadcaster Pierre Berton passed away in 2004. Berton visited Brandon a number of times, including as a guest speaker at the Red Oak Inn to welcome Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden in 1974. He mentioned that it had been almost 30 years since he was last in Brandon - he had come for military training. That night he received a standing ovation from 350 people for his speech about Brandon and the history of the Prairies. He came again in 1979 as the chairman of Heritage Canada, promoting the need for a Heritage Day national holiday - which we now celebrate as Louis Riel Day. While here, he spoke to local museums and historical societies about how they could save the Prince Edward Hotel - "Until people realize there is something important about preserving the past, there's no point in the future". The City had decided to demolish the Prince Eddy just two weeks prior. He urged people to "Get out pickets, lie down in front of City Hall, scream and shout." In 1985, Berton received Manitoba's Order of the Buffalo Hunt as a "chronicler of living Canadian history". He was 84 when he passed. His books were written in a style that engages the audience by bringing history to life. . His books about the building of the Canadian National Railway include "The National Dream" and "The Last Spike". These books showed how the building of the transcontinental railway created Canada as a modern nation. They were turned into a TV documentary on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). . Berton also wrote two excellent books on the War of 1812. These books are "The Invasion of Canada" and "Flames Across the Border". . He also wrote an excellent book about the history of Niagara Falls entitled "Niagara". Reading the books by Pierre Berton (slide 2) is one of the biggest pleasures of immigrating into Canada. When I landed in Canada 10 years ago, I found this country is a paradise of book lover. From each Octorber to next May, we have such a long cold seasons to kill time. Reading is a godsend. I collected major books by Berton regarding Canadian history and squeezed them in one cubicle of my book shelf (slide 1). The Canadian history is staring at you. Klondike gold digger, young soldier in the famous Vimy battle in WWI, North Pole explorer, the politician who made the miracle of Canadian Pacific Railway happen, etc. Pierre Berton is able to squeeze the last drop of interest from Canadian history to share with his readers. I am awed by his energy, wit and erudition all the time. By reading his fascinating books, I know why a road near my home was named "Von Horne" (who oversaw the construction of CPR), why there are so many beautiful tulips in summer in Canada (Holand monarchy expressed their gratitude to Canada during WWII), why Canadian don't need to worry about its annihilation by the United States, etc. I always think, how can people get bored in life? He simply needs to spin the globe and put his finger on any country on land randomly and then read the country's intriguing history. History on a cultural basis is so inspiring and interesting. I am pround of the history of the True North where I am living!

It’s official: Writers’ Trust has relaunched the beloved and venerable #BertonHouse Writers’ Residency for fall 2022. A renovation of the century-old childhood home of the late author, #PierreBerton, is currently underway. The work, funded by the @cityofyukonokgov Community Development Fund and carried out by Van Fleet Construction, will improve accessibility, safety, and comfort for future writers-in-residence.
