✨️𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈✨️ on saturday, i went to the city, and i spotted these beauties that don't even release until april 30th! i can't wait to receive my pre-order on tuesday! powerless has been living rent-free in my brain since i read it, and i'm hoping powerful will tide me over until reckless releases in july!😅 QOTD: do you ever go to the bookstore just to look around? 👀 AOTD: believe it or not, i left this trip to this particular store empty-handed — i did, however, thrift some books later that day at another store🤭 ☁️ ☁️ ☁️ ☁️ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcanada #Canadianbookstagram #bookishcanadians #booklover #books #bookblogger #bookgirl #bookreader #bookaesthetic #bookaddict #bookish #bookphotography #readersofinstagram #reader #booksmakemehappy #booksbooksbooks #powerlesslaurenroberts #powerless #powerful #laurenroberts #paedyngray #paedynandkai #kaiazer #romantasy #fantasy #yabooks #YA #brookesreads

Happy Sunday book friends! How was your weekend? Check out any Indie Bookstores? My friend Kim and I had so much fun driving around checking out 12 local bookstores! It was such a wonderful day, but I’ll admit I was pretty sleepy once I got home🙈

Today was a much better day. The boys are being kinder to me as well. It's nice. I didn't read as much last night as I had wanted, I fell asleep with my book in my hands, haha. I might actually finish it before May though! I have about 100 pages left and am really hoping to finish it tonight. Draw Down the Moon has been a very easy read. It actually reads like proper YA, so it's a bit juvenile for me. But it is nice to see a YA book that is actually YA. I think I might make Off With Their Heads my next read. It sounds amazing. I am always drawn to anything Wonderland inspired. 💛Sunday check-in💛 ^ I just made that up by the way. It does sound like cute caption title though, no? I hope you're all having a great Sunday so far. Being productive or just relaxing and doing nothing. It's all good. For me, it's been such a busy week and I'm excited to slow down and enjoy little moments when I can. Like this picture of my little with his cute hand and toes on display🥺🥺 And rereading that MAMA book a hundred times because my oldest loves it when I say "sloth" and laughs hysterically 🤣 Haven't read much this weekend or as much this month, tbh. But when life calls, it's okay. So here's me reminding you that it's fine to not read sometimes and get caught up with what's infront of you instead. Brb, time to entertain the little people again💁🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

💌 Author Mail! 💌 @acordovabooks is the sweetest! This little mail took me straight back to Baker Oaks and into Jake and Allie’s story. I love all the art prints and stickers🥰 I had the opportunity to read (and freakin adore) her debut novel The Truth Never Spoken and I cannot wait for the rest of the world to finally meet and witness Jake and Allie’s love story🥹 Here’s a little quote teaser: “he chuckles and I suddenly find myself wanting to hear that sound forever” Things I loved: -multicultural representation -plus sized/curvy representation -no third act breakup My FULL REVIEW can be found on my page! The Truth Never Spoken by @acordovabooks RELEASES ON MAY 7!

📚 Books I will for sure be reading in May 📚 🔹️The Secret History by Donna Tartt (the main pick for the @booksaresick book club) 🔹️The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King (the secondary pick for the bookclub) 🔹️ The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman (my favourite series) 🔹️ Everything's Eventual by Stephen King (this has The Little Sisters of Eluria in it, which I want to read before I get much further in the Dark Tower series) Hope to read more than these four, but I will definitely be reading these ones! #thesecrethistory #donnatartt #everythingseventual #stephenking #thedrawingofthethree #thelastdeviltodie #richardosman #bookseries #bookclubbooks #stephenkingbooks #stephenkingfan #thethursdaymurderclub #constantreader #maytbr #mayreading #bookstack #bookspines #readingstephenking #readmytbrshelf #booksarethebest #bookishcanadians #readingtime

if women and children first by @alinagrabowski_ isn't on your radar, then it should be. this novel took me by surprise in the best way and i absolutely loved it. the writing is stunning, immersive and gripping. WACF unpacks the events of a teenage girl's murder, told through the perspective of 10 different women and its impact on them. each chapter also has its own unique voice because each one is told from the perspective of a different character. i loved this novel so much, the writing is gripping and beautiful and i loved the different perspectives of each of the characters and how they intersected. if you like a fast-paced novel, you won't find that here but because there are several different POVs, it keeps it interesting. even with several different POVs, the novel doesn't get confusing. if you love a lit-fic heavy novel with elements of mystery, WACF is absolutely worth picking up. thank you @alinagrabowski_ for the gifted copy! WACF comes out on may 7.

✨TRAVIS✨ Why, oh why did I wait so long after loving #ArchersVoice to read this one 🙃🥹 such a perfect follow up! Travis was a character I wanted to know more about after meeting him in the first book. And this book showed him perfectly 👏🏻👏🏻 misunderstood to begin with, Travis grew & matured into an incredibly great person who takes care of those he loves. And Haven was amazing! A fun, plant loving, spitfire of a woman who kept everyone on their toes 🥰 I loved getting to know the two of them, & can’t wait to see them in the next book! Like in the first book, I fell in love with the small town all over again! The people of this town hold a special place in my heart & I wish they could each get their own book 💕💕 I loved seeing the updates with Bree & Archer & hope there will be more in the next book FALLING FOR GAGE 💙 If you haven’t read this beautiful series yet, do it! You won’t be disappointed 🥹💕🥹💕 What to expect: ✨small town ✨dual POV ✨interconnected series ✨forced proximity ✨strangers to friends to lovers ✨the best secondary characters ✨past trauma ✨healing & strength ✨plant loving FMC ✨open door ✨and so much more!!! Have you read this? And what other small town series should I add to my TBR? • • • • 💙

THE SICILIAN INHERITANCE by Jo Piazza This book was so fun. And reading it during my vacation (and first-ever visit) to Sicily was the icing on the cannolo! The story was so engaging and propulsive that I was completely unfussed by some (pretty significant) plot holes. With its wonderful sense of place, unexpected historical insights, and sun-drenched intrigue, this book makes for delightful escapism. . . . #bookish #bookishcanadians #bookstagram #idratherbereading #booklover #librarybooks #librarybooklover #thesicilianinheritance #springreading #fiction #sicilia

Happy Sunday! Here's my #sundaystack I rushed to the mall from school on Friday to get to the #childrenshospitalbookmarket @chfmanitoba at @stvitalcentre. Every year I end up getting there about a day too late OR in the busy/rush times and end up with not a great haul. It usually starts during the day on weekdays so the retired folk and stay at home moms get all the best books before I get there, or I get claustrophobic trapped between people (this happens most in the fiction section...). But 3:30 was perfect, it was busy, and I still got claustrophobic but I got a lot of good deals this time! Of course my favourite section was #memoirs and #biographies, so here's my list: A Piece of Cake - Cupcake Brown Lucky Child - Luong Ung The Night Shift - Brian Goldman A Leaf in the Bitter Wind - Ting-Xing Ye The Lost Daughters of China - Karin Evans (has been on my goodreads to read list forever! such an awesome find!) Misconception - Paul & Shannon Morell Startling Moon - Liu Hong Featuring: Unorthodox - @deborah_feldman I started this one on audiobook and abandoned it (something I do frequently with audiobooks) so I'm hoping physical copy will go better Not pictured: Untamed @glennondoyle I'd been wanting to read this one for a while, despite hearing mixed reviews. My only problem has been finding a decent price since it seems to be (more) available in hardcover. The ladies at the booksale were surprised it was $8 (Big expense, I know 🤣), and admittedly, there may have been a range of prices, I did see multiple copies and should have compared prices just in case, but I was fine with paying $8 since it still is selling for about $38 in stores... I'll also share about my kiddo and fiction finds at some point, but of this list, what should I start with? Have you read any of these? #booksale #childrenshospitalbooksale @hsc_winnipeg #bookstagram #bookstack #bookhaul #memoirs #iheartmemoirs #toomanybooks #greatbookdeals #canadianbookstagram #bookishcanadians #canuck_reads #readreviewrepeat #booksbooksbooks

Smoke (short stories) by Nicola Winstanley (@winstanley.nicola), forthcoming with Wolsak & Wynn (@wolsakandwynn), May 14, 2024. This is one of the most unforgettable short story collections I’ve ever read. Dark and gorgeously written, these interconnected stories span New Zealand to Canada and examine intergenerational trauma from different viewpoints. While trying to work out my feelings about the book, because some of these stories made me bone-deep unsettled, I realized that the ability to evoke this feeling is what makes the book so remarkable: so true to life, which is often devoid of sense or justice. And it’s not that people can’t get happy endings but that life has multiple endings, and how we feel about them is a complicated. “A bad thing happens and then it never stops.” There is also love in these stories, in all its forms. “It Means Beloved” is one of my favourites. I keep coming back to it: how powerfully and deeply it conveys how damaged men are. How we find connection, sometimes only fleetingly, in unexpected places. It’s a story that stirs up the rage I experience when something awful happens and I feel impotent to help. Like all good stories, it’s one that encourages learning by imagination: what could I do—what could we all do—to make the world better for the most vulnerable? Smoke is full of beautifully drawn characters. The narrative cadence manages to lull even as it unsettles, pulling you along. A staggering collection. Highly recommend. . . . #canlit #shortstories #amreading #bookishcanadians #shortfiction #litfic #litfict #canadianwriters #readersofinstagram #readersgonnaread #bookstagram #bookstagramcanada #bookishlove #bookishcanadians #mustread #newzealand #canadianauthors #shortstory #shortstorywriter

April was a pretty average reading month for me. I read 19 books (but there are still a couple days left) amounting to 5,906 pages. My average rating wasn't as good as last month, at only 3.8. Here is what I read this month: Review: Sleet Princess by S.J. Tilly Granite Harbor by Peter Nichols Savor It by Tarah Dewitt The Ballad of Darcy and Russell by Morgan Matson Where Was Goodbye? by Janice Lynn Mather Love, Lies and Cherry Pie by Jackie Lau The Knockout by Bella Matthews The Last to Pie by Misha Popp Chasing Wild by Kristen Proby Kindle Unlimited: Wait with Me by Amy Daws Meet Me in the Penalty Box by Cali Melle Ice Out by Veronica Eden Strung Along by Hannah Cowan Cruel Prince by Ashley Jade Alive and Wells by Bailey Hannah Push the Envelope by Rochelle Paige Wrong for You by Harloe Rae The Vendetti Empire by Sapphire Knight Owned: Vicious Prince by Rina Kent I loved Bella Matthews' newest book, the Knockout as well as Kristen Proby's, Chasing Wild. A new author I discovered and loved was Ashley Jade. I'm looking forward to May and some new reads and anticipated reads! I received an ARC of Malicious from @keosbornauthor ! And what a privilege it was. K E Osborn is always a go to author for me- I cannot stop reading the books she writes. I’ve loved the Defiance men from Houston to LA to NOLA to Chicago and now to LA. I loved Sadie and Maverick’s story and how it developed from them hating each other to one of love. I also loved the sass in the book from multiple characters! Shout out to the Mummy reference in this book- one of my favourite movies! Our relationship tropes 💍🤍 This is my hubby of almost 9 years (our wedding anniversary is in July!) and this pic is from our vacay to Costa Rica last summer 🌴🌺 I’ve seen this going around and love everyone else’s relationship tropes so I had to join in. I love our meet cute story, even if he didn’t know it was happening at the time. He was so innocent, as my younger brother’s volleyball coach to my fangirl, sunshine cheerleader self. Our tropes are: ☀️ grumpy x sunshine 🏐 sports romance 🤍🖤 opposites attract ⏰ perfect timing 🥰 he fell first (he didn’t tell me though!) Do we have any in common? Just finished #FunnyStory by @emilyhenrywrites Daphne has always cherished how Peter recounts their love story: their whimsical meeting on a blustery day, their romance kindled by a runaway hat, and their eventual move to his idyllic lakeside hometown to start a new chapter. He had a flair for storytelling—until he admitted his enduring love for his childhood best friend, Petra. This revelation marks the start of Daphne's unexpected new chapter: alone in the scenic town of Waning Bay, Michigan, with no friends or family nearby. Despite her struggles to make ends meet on a children's librarian's modest salary, she finds an unconventional solution to her solitude. She proposes a roommate arrangement with the person who might understand her situation—Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak. #TrivialReads #TrivialSoup #ReadingIsMagic #ReadingChallenge #ReadersOfInstagram #Instabooks #ILoveBooks #CanadianBookWorm #CanadianBookstagram #BookWorm #Bookstagram #BooksOfInstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookReview #BookishCanadians #Bookish #BookCommunity #Bookaholic #BookAddict #BookLovers #FunnyStory #EmilyHenry #Bookstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #LiteraryLaughs #BookishLove #EmbraceYourStory #ReadingStats Reading Goals Check-In: 📚 100 Books in 2024 - 80/100 📖 24 Must Read Books In 2024 Challenge - 14/24 🤟🏾 24 Books by BIPOC Authors in 2024 - 19/24 🌈 12 LGBTQIA+ Books - 7/12 🧠 12 Non-Fiction Books in 2024 - 7/12 🌎 10 The StoryGraph Reads the World - 2/10 🇨🇦 24 Books by Canadian Authors in 2024 - 10/24

Having a bit of a tough weekend so let's just do a little 'this or that.' Spring or summer Daffodils or violets Tree blossoms or green leaves Spring rain or summer rain Mine are spring, violets, tree blossoms and spring rain. The nuggets are actually cheering me up quite a bit tonight with their antics. They've been so lovely to me, which is a stark contrast to their behaviour last night 😅 #bookishlove #bookishcommunity #bookishcanadians #thedarklibrarians #inkdrinker #bibliophiles #bookstagram #Bibliophilesandcoffee #bookstagrammer #myreadinglife #readersofinstagram #bookdragon #bookworm #booknerd

Land Marks-Maryann Lesert - This book made my radical tree hugging heart so happy. - A grassroots focused story of what hope, and fierce love for community and the land can accomplish when people come together. I loved this book. It was a slow to get going but the pacing was so good for the story. The buildup gave way to an intense fight for the Michigan people and lands that left so much fire inside my heart. Can I also say ugh that Alberta was mentioned 😝 unsurprising in the context. But, still ugh lol. - I really loved how this book touched on so many connected issues that affect people and the environment. It actually included Indigenous led movements and how important they are to the fight. How their leadership is appreciated and should be respected. I also loved how there was a focus on relationships between the characters. All these individuals who feel so strongly and passionate about wanting to make change. Their dedication was inspiring. - “Rebellious women and Indigenous communities have not won many battles.” - “Why? Because they can.” - “They try to break the human spirit” Frank had said. “But it’s coming back stronger, generation by generation. These young people are done with this bullshit.” - “Anishinaabek women, Water Protectors, are the backbone of the movement. They always have been.” - “Up in Alberta, NorA had gotten away with something similar.” - “People wanted spectacle.” - Books to read if you like this book: Damnation Spring-Ash Davidson Greenwood-Michael Christie The Overstory-Richard Powers Tree Thieves- @lyndsiebourgon Ducks-Kate Beaton The Petroleum Papers-Jeff Dembicki - Cont in comments - #BargainAndBooks #Bookstagram #BookishCanadians #LandMarks #CanadianBookstagram #LandMarksNovel #SpringPopUp #MaryannLesert

It’s #CanadianIndependentBookStoreDay, so naturally I headed down to @bookcityto this afternoon, both to support my local independent and to finally pick up two books that I’ve had my eye on for ages. Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet has been one of my reading highlights of the past decade, so I’m surprised it’s taken me until now to get hold of ‘Companion Piece’, whereas Coco Mellor’s debut just sounds like a cracking good read based on everything I’ve heard.

“𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐬.” Sally Hepworth is a must-read author for me; she does domestic dramas with a touch of mystery so well, and this one does not disappoint. I listened to and read this one; both ways captured my attention and had me speeding through. No matter how Hepworth’s prose is delivered, it is always compelling. Narrator Jessica Clarke had a great inflection when she read which was easy to follow; her Australian accent helped me dive into the Australian setting easily too. Hepworth weaves a few different narratives: the past of foster sisters Jessica, Norah and Alicia at Winding Meadows, the present day sisters point of view after the discovery of bones at Winding Meadows, and the therapy sessions of an unknown first person narrator. I found all three sisters to be sympathetic and I was cheering for all of them as they confronted their defence mechanisms for survival. Miss Fairchild, the sisters’ foster mother, was a total narcissist and I anxiously awaited her downfall (making for a perfect antagonist). Although a darker tale for Hepburn, with its focus on the ways the foster system can fail the children in its care and the abuse that can be suffered, it is powerful and poignant. There are some very well placed reveals that had me gasping, alongside an ending that is both smile-worthy and gasp-worthy. Darling Girls is a story of survival, empowerment, gaslighting, safety, sisterhood, and the search for love. It is bingeworthy and I think might be my favourite Hepworth novel yet. Thank you to @stmartinspress, @macmillan.audio, and @netgalley for the ARCs!

🌦 #HappySaturday | You can catch me here for the rest of the day...⁣ ⁣ My in-laws left this morning after a week of visiting with us to meet their first great-grandbaby.⁣ ⁣ Honestly, I don't know how y'all have babies in your house all the time, just like living with you, 24/7? Incredible. ⁣ ⁣ It was a busy, full week and today demanded to be all about decompressing. I was going to finish painting upstairs - I only have the doors to do - but I don't have it in me. I'm on empty. ⁣ ⁣ So while my husband watches weird old movies, starting with 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝟿 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦, I'm trying to finally finish 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 by Vera Kurian, which I have been reading for 7 weeks and was due back at the library on Thursday after 2 renewals.⁣ ⁣ It's not the book's fault, it's life's fault.⁣ ⁣ 💬 How is your Saturday going? Did you make it out to a bookstore for #IndependentBookstoreDay?? I would, but the thought of getting dressed and leaving the house is so off-putting right now.

#Zulaikha by Niloufar-Lily Soltani Genre: #MiddleEast #Fiction The story of an Iranian woman and her life in her motherland, beginning from 1958. Covers a lot of Iranian history as well as the struggles of women in the patriarchal society. The blend of contemporary and historical works well in this literary novel focussed on an ordinary Iranian woman. Through her eyes, we get to see the patriarchal and religious dominance in Iran as well as the historical upheavals that the country has faced since decades, be it the Iranian Revolution of the late 1970s, Reza Pehlavi’s monarchy being overthrown by the theocracy of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, and the aftermath of all these events. Reading this book actually feels like you are transported to Iran. It imbues the culture and the beliefs of the region into the plot with just as much vigour as it incorporates the negative aspects such as the misogyny and the post-revolution fallout. I liked this indie novel a lot, for its lead character as well as its historical complexities. Despite some areas where it could have worked better, it is still a laudable debut work, highlighting a region and a time that barely finds mention in mainstream fiction. Recommended to fans of historical fiction and Middle-East fiction. My thanks to @river_street_writes for the complimentary copy. Detailed review on #Goodreads and my blog. Review: Talking as Fast as I Can by @laurengraham ★★★★★ | Memoir | Audio: 5 hrs • Pages: 224 — My first experience listening to an audiobook on @libby.app was a success! Especially as Talking as Fast as I Can is read by Lauren herself! We all know how well Lauren suits her character Lorelai, so you can imagine that energy while listening to the audiobook! The book was equal parts hilarious, inspirational, motivating, empowering, and emotional! Lauren shares her experience getting into acting, life before Gilmore Girls, before/after the reunion, and as the cover states, everything in between!! I felt like a friend of Lauren's, getting the inside scoop on the acting biz in the 90's-00's, Hollywood, society, and of course the journey through the production of Gilmore Girls! Please let it be a cliff hanger! 😂😅 If you haven't watched the entirety of GG/The Reunion, Lauren gives a heads up for spoilers! Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I looked forward to escaping into and I would definitely recommend especially to aspiring actors/authors!

Review: Selected Stories of Anton Chekhov Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky @penguinclassics My Quick Take: It took me a minute to settle into to Chekhov’s short story style, but when I did I could see how the stories carried common themes and spoke loudly with a simple voice. *** Q: Have you read any classic Russian lit? I have to say a big thanks to my partner in Russian literature adventures, Rochelle (@rochelles_reading_journal) because reading with someone and discussing as we go makes the journey more rewarding. We’d finished a book of Tolstoy short stories and she was keen to dive into Chekhov next. Then, along the way, @boookleup joined our chat group and added her insight. More good company! After the sweeping tales of Tolstoy, I found Chekhov different and didn’t connect right away, but reading a story a day for a month was a good way to gain familiarity. Somewhere along the way the stories started to resonate, some more than others. My impression became one of stories of the mundane and the ordinary, yet offering a dramatic or thoughtful pearl with some frequency. Chekhov seems to strip away excessive description or flowery language to get to the essence of the everyday. Though I sensed that he had a deep sense of cynicism for the behaviour of the human race, he peppered his stories with rays of human kindness or beautiful moments. Highlights included: Ward 6: A well-constructed tale of a doctor at a psychiatric hospital that raises questions of the nature of mental illness, and the cycles of inevitable decline. There are notes of Kafka here, and of the nature of control. A Medical Case: A beautiful tale of a medical assistant, Kordyov, who sees things plainly and appreciates the moment. He sees the devil in the lights of a factory, and wealth as a type of illness. A wonderful description of a peaceful Sunday morning. In the Ravine: Notable for the one shocking scene of casual murder! I gasped aloud. Easter Night: My favourite of the bunch. It was a meditation on grief, loss and seeing the world in a new way. Overall, an excellent milestone on my exploration of Russian literature.

Welcome to the KidLit Corner!   In 2022, I started a bookstagram account, @momma.needs.to.read and started sharing reviews and recommendations there. I've loved this community, but recently I've been thinking about creating a separate space for my children's book reviews and recommendations. The reason is so that those who are only interested in KidLit can get just that. I want to create this space where parents, teachers, caregivers, and more can find great books for the children in their lives.  The KitLit Corner will be dedicated to finding and sharing quality books for children that are diverse and inclusive. Every child deserves to read books that they can feel a personal connection to, and I want to help that happen.   I'm happy to have you here, and I hope you enjoy what you see!
