He emphasized the need for education on the potential issues arising from such programs and noted that financial benefits drive the increase in seasonal workers. Incidents of violence and abuse towards retail workers are growing. The Government recently announced that it intends to introduce a standalone criminal offence for assaulting a shop worker, a measure the Home Affairs Committee proposed in a 2021 report. This is part of a wider set of measures in the Government's plan to fight retail crime. On 17 April the Committee spoke to representatives of retail workers, wholesale workers and the police about the impact violence and abuse on retail workers, and the proposed change in law. DACS is calling for a Freelancer Commissioner. “We can often overlook how rights — copyright, moral rights are important to individuals as a way of remunerating themselves, sustaining themselves and allowing them to be part of our creative industries. Freelancers do not have pensions. They do not have shared parental leave. They need that type of remuneration and control over their work to do their jobs.” Reema Selhi, Head of Policy & International at DACS, urged the Government to consider a Freelancer Commissioner at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee last week. Freelancers make up a huge proportion of the jobs in the Creative Industries. DCMS estimates that the sector was responsible for 2.3 million jobs in the UK as of September, with 49% of the sector workforce being freelance workers. This rises to 70% of workers in the visual arts, vastly exceeding the national average of 16%. DACS is calling for a Freelancer Commissioner to ensure that future governments understand the diverse nature and challenges that freelancers face. A dedicated Freelancer Commissioner would be a necessary opportunity to tie in all the different issues that freelancers experience, from copyright to taxation. The creative industry, in particular, and creators and performers already sit between quite a few different departments. This would be an opportunity for them to have a singular voice and have that voice represented more fairly. Today, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee hosted a session where @ALCS_UK, @becs_performers, DACS and @Directors_UK gave evidence exploring the issues around creator remuneration in the UK. Dame @caroline4gosport, Committee Chair, asked about the working practices across the creative industries, including the increased precariousness of employment and continual falling remuneration for creators. Key issues for UK creators that were highlighted included: 👉Creators rely on a wide portfolio of earnings from commissioned work, sales, as well as royalties to sustain their careers. 👉49% of workers in the creative industries are freelance. Creators are twice as likely to work freelance compared to other industries. 👉Creators’ pay across the creative industries is falling, risking a loss of talent across the sector. 👉The downturn in income has been caused by various factors, including the shift to digital platforms and advancing technology, neither of which are well covered by established mechanisms for copyright remuneration. 👉UK creatives are at a disadvantage to those in 45 other countries, where private copying levies* exist to pay creatives when their works are stored and shared across digital devices. 👉Without addressing issues of UK creator remuneration, the Government risks undermining its aims for the creative industries to increase social mobility through creative careers. Yesterday MTC Australia was pleased to host members of the Select Committee on Workforce Australia Employment Services, Mr Julian Hill MP (Chair), Mr Russel Broadbent MP (Deputy Chair), Mr Aaron Violi MP (Committee member) and Dr Joel Bateman (Secretary) as they visited our Marrickville site to learn more about the services and programs that we provide. During the visit, the committee members and Secretariat staff met with MTC executives, frontline staff, and participants from Workforce Australia, Skills for Education and Employment (SEE), Self-Employment Assistance and Employability Skills Training (EST). They discussed the importance of these services in helping individuals gain the skills needed for employment, get assistance to secure meaningful work or support to start their own business. It was great to have a chance to introduce some of the participants who have and continued to benefit from our services, showcasing how MTC is helping people in our community access better opportunities for employment. The Committee members also took the opportunity to tour MTC’s site and get an understanding of the range of services being offered by MTC, how we provide support tailored to each individual’s needs and our commitment to delivering quality outcomes for jobseekers. First of all, there are two January 6th report books published by the Select Committee – can anyone explain to me the difference between the two? This is an absolutely comprehensive report of the events that preceded and transpired during January 6th. It provides overwhelming evidence of the ways that President Trump conspired to overturn an election through his Big Lie. I had some questions after reading this, though: there are blank spots in the day wherein Trump's lawyers refuse to say what he did at that time. What do we think he was doing? Secondly, some of the militia groups that showed up at the Capitol had information that even the army did not have. How did they get this info? It's implied that someone within the White House fed it to them, which makes sense, but I think it is important to investigate that, and I thought that was in some ways the point of this investigation. Lastly, the Secret Service refused to bring Trump to the Capitol after his speech. What would have occurred if he had arrived? I can only imagine what the Secret Service must have been thinking while preventing him from his attempts to join his supporters. It was frightening to understand how well-planned and well-armed the groups who showed up at the Capitol truly were. It was really only from luck that more people didn't die, and especially that none of our senators were harmed. Secondly, the way that the armed forces did not intercede until much later seems to have been due entirely to ineptitude, rather than any conspiracy to prevent them from coming. That in itself is truly scary. This should be a must-read for every American. COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Select Committee appointed to investigate Sri Lanka's bankruptcy will meet for the first time on Tuesday (18) in Parliament. The meeting will focus on the committee's future course of action, Chair of the committee SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said. They will also discuss the names of those who will first be summoned before the committee. In the meantime, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara will not be part of the committee. The SJB has decided to appoint an alternative committee instead. Happy Tr*mp Arraignment Day!! I chipped away pretty steadily at this book for a few months. It's not a light or fast read. The report itself is necessarily redundant just by nature of what it is. It's also really frustrating to read about all these proceedings which wouldn't even be necessary had we just had a competent, law-abiding, truth-respecting person as our President. 🤬 The last two chapters give a chronological look at Tr*mp's movements, actions (earlier in the day) and inaction 😡 (as the day went on) on January 6, and then the same but from the perspective at the US Capitol. It was a weird mix of things I knew from watching that day and new things that were learned and/or pieced together later. Honestly? Too soon. These two chapters in particular caused me to revisit the emotions of that day, which still feels a little traumatic. What a scary and horrible time. I would say read this if you are very interested in all of the details of the proceedings and in who was forthcoming with what information. (There was a lot of invoking of 5th amendment rights, attorney-client privilege, executive privilege, and just failure to show up at all.) Just be aware that it's not an easy read in any sense of the word. The Select Committee has released their full 800-page report regarding the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. The report has many interesting suggestions and conclusions; however, the language used can be hard to understand at times. This post will break down three terms within the report and cite instances where they were used. 1. Impropriety: a failure to observe standard of show due honesty or character The committee raised the prospect that former assistant attorney general Jeffrey Clark broke the law by trying to weaponize the Justice Department to help overturn the 2020 election in Trump's favour. 2.Egregious: Outstandingly bad; shocking “One of the most egregious things Clark did was draft a letter for the Justice Department to send to election officials in battleground states, urging them to essentially overturn their results. The letter, crafted with help from fellow Trump appointee Ken Klukowski, falsely asserted that the department believed there were problems with the results.” 3. Doxed: The act of publicly posting private or identifying information about someone on the internet, typically with malicious intent. Before the #SelectCommittee investigating the management of #NSSF, I asked the committee to pick interest in finding out how the monthly Shs100 billion collected by NSSF is invested. We need an international audit firm which cannot be compromised on this. If it takes a month, because of intentional delays, without #investing this money, what does this money do? This NSSF issue is very serious and sensitive. #Investigations should be focused on real numbers. A day missed means a loss and yet we need a return on investments.
