Your mind is most vulnerable to negative thoughts when your body is placed under intense physical stress, and it can be easy for pessimistic words and phrases to overtake your mental space, such as “I Can’t Finish” or “I Give Up” or even just “QUIT!” These words, although not spoken, can impact your performance at critical moments in training or operation skill training sessions. Much like visualization, positive self-talk is a strategy that should be repeated during your regular training routine in order to be most effective. During a brutal track session, an athlete might say things to him/herself such as “High Knees” or “Control Breathing” or “You Got This!” During the swim session, phrases like “Long & Strong” or “Stay Smooth” can be effective cues to help keep a tactical athlete mentally focused on the task at hand. Find a few mantras that work best for you, and are related to your training session or discipline. - T H E • G U R K H A The Gurkha Contingent is a line department of the Singapore Police Force consisting primarily of Gurkhas from Nepal. Members of the Gurkha Contingent are trained to be highly skilled and are selected for their display of strong discipline and dedication in their tasks. The principal role of the contingent is to be a special guard force, and it is currently used as a counter-terrorist force. Upon successful selection, Gurkha Contingent trainees are flown to Singapore, and housed at the permanent base of the Gurkha Contingent where they will receive ten months of training before being deployed for duties. A distinctive part of the Gurkha uniform not worn by any other member of the Singapore Police Force, it is named after the Terai region in Nepal, a location linked to the events surrounding the Gurkha War. The Hat Terai Gurkha worn only during guard duty and on parades, the hat is made of khaki-coloured felt with a dark blue puggaree wound around the hat with six folds. The aluminium silver anodized police force cap badge is affixed on the puggaree to the left. C O M M I T M E N T • I N • T R A I N I N G • Serving in the nation has to be a calling, not something you’re forced into. • Serving your country is not entirely a selfless act. There is nothing wrong with serving your country with the goal of bettering yourself with valuable skills that are transferable to the civilian world, getting college assistance, learning leadership skills, becoming more disciplined or just continuing to be part of a team if you love being a team player. • But many need a why in order to find the motivation to prepare themselves physically for military service. • Most of the motivation questions come from pre-military teens who never really have trained hard for anything, so it is understandable that they don't fully grasp the time for serving the nation. • When it comes to training/fitness lacking the foundation going into the military will make every day a little tougher on you than it should. • Imagine your battle buddy, swim buddy, squad, platoon or whatever team you operate in needs your commitments and know you are able to help them when times get tough. • One day, your training/fitness will be a determining factor in whether or not you, a teammate or other person you are trying to help will live or die. • Even if you are not planning to be in a combat position, your teammates still need you. P O S I T I V E • S E L F • T A L K • When things get tough, what do you say to yourself? • Your mind is most vulnerable to negative thoughts when your body is placed under intense physical stress, and it can be easy for pessimistic words and phrases to overtake your mental space, such as “I Can’t Finish” or “I Give Up” or even just “QUIT!” • These words, although not spoken, can impact your performance at critical moments in training or operation skill training sessions. • Much like visualization, positive self-talk is a strategy that should be repeated during your regular training routine in order to be most effective. • During a brutal track session, an athlete might say things to him/herself such as “High Knees” or “Control Breathing” or “You Got This!” During the swim session, phrases like “Long & Strong” or “Stay Smooth” can be effective cues to help keep a tactical athlete mentally focused on the task at hand. • Find a few mantras that work best for you, and are related to your training session or discipline. Instead of just owning their error, many people attempt to defend their position. • This only digs the hole further and leads to lost trust and deterioration of relationships. • Instead of being too proud to say they’re wrong, mentally tough people accept full responsibility for their actions. • Admitting your mistakes frees you from guilt! By not admitting you’re wrong, you allow the guilt to sit and rot in your stomach. • Admitting mistakes also sets a good example for your peers. “As commander, we often feel guilty for making mistakes in front of our peers, but we shouldn’t try cover up our faults or let our shame and guilt control us. Rather, we should reconceptualize our mistakes as valuable teaching opportunities that will help prepare our peers to successfully navigate the hard parts of training. We need to be brave enough to admit we are wrong, and strong enough to fix the mistake and move on. The Gurkha Contingent is a line department of the Singapore Police Force consisting primarily of Gurkhas from Nepal. Members of the Gurkha Contingent are trained to be highly skilled and are selected for their display of strong discipline and dedication in their tasks. • The principal role of the contingent is to be a special guard force, and it is currently used as a counter-terrorist force. • Upon successful selection, Gurkha Contingent trainees are flown to Singapore, and housed at the permanent base of the Gurkha Contingent where they will receive ten months of training before being deployed for duties. • A distinctive part of the Gurkha uniform not worn by any other member of the Singapore Police Force, it is named after the Terai region in Nepal, a location linked to the events surrounding the Gurkha War. • The Hat Terai Gurkha worn only during guard duty and on parades, the hat is made of khaki-coloured felt with a dark blue puggaree wound around the hat with six folds. The beginning of the Special Operations Command (SOC) can be traced to the Maria Hertogh riots in 1950. Known as the Riot Squad, the unit was formed two years later with 60 Police officers, and their responsibilities included crowd and riot control. Growing from strength to strength over the past 65 years, the SOC has evolved to meet the security needs of Singapore, and now comprises different units with specialised skills. Long history, leading-edge capabilities! The SOC comprises specialist units equipped to handle emergency situations. These units include the Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) unit, the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) and the Police K-9 Unit. The STAR unit handles hostage and rescue operations that involve armed suspects, and conducts high-risk arrests. It’s hard to make the cut as the bar are set high for potential SOC officers. Those who wish to join the team must undergo rigorous physical and mental tests that gauge their abilities, attitudes and aptitude, to ensure that they are truly the right fit for this demanding job. I used to think I was the only one going through tough shit, and believe me, I’ve been through a lot - loss of a child, infidelity, divorce, financial struggles, combat, being wounded in combat, losing friends in combat, PTSD, anxiety, depression, survivor’s guilt, dozens of injuries, multiple surgeries, etc., etc. ⬇️ Eventually I realized how closed-minded and ignorant I was. I learned to open my eyes and listen. Wasn’t Feeling it this morning at al! Got to bed an hour later than normal, hit snooze once and then laid there knowing I would be disappointed in myself all day if I didn’t get my chest workout in this morning.
