Sunday Service. I don’t think I deliberately set out to produce what is commonly known as a ‘chocolate box’ image, but it certainly looks like one. The essential centrepiece is St.Nicholas church in Bulwick, Northamptonshire with its ‘Tall Perp. w tower with clasping buttresses’ (Pevsner). And as we all know there’s nothing like clasping buttresses. I must admit I’ve never been inside, but I have seen it many times from the window of The Queen’s Head pub opposite, which, unlike the church, is now sadly and permanently closed. Something else that’s disappeared is the busy traffic on this road, as this was once the main A43 route between Stamford and Corby. The village was mercifully bypassed, preventing incidents like an army tank on a transporter wedging itself under the roof thatch of a cottage. Or maybe that was yet another misleading tale I was told in the pub: “Ah, Pete! About 15 years ago, I was on a tour of Safe Harbor Dam while taking the Hands-on History of Lancaster County course through Millersville University. Our guide, a retired employee, said they periodically send divers down behind the dam to remove large underwater debris like sunken trees. One time a diver went down only to resurface a few minutes later. He quickly climbed out, announcing he was quitting! . The reason? In the murky depths, he claimed to see a creature large enough to eat him. . Truth be told, every hydroelectric dam in the country has some version of this story. However, there might be a kernel of truth to this fishy-sounding tale. For example, catfish never stop growing. . Slide one (courtesy of @brucenickles) lends additional credibility to the local man-eating monster tale. This 46-pound beast was caught from the Safe Harbor Dam fishing pier on September 26, 2022. . Giant catfish may not be the Susquehanna's only monsters. At least one petroglyph at Safe Harbor might depict another (slide two). This curved image might portray a Misiginebig (slide three). They are giant underwater serpents. Described as being as large around as a tree trunk, with horns on its head, a bright blazing crest on its forehead, and scales glowing like sparks of fire. The Misiginebig lurks in the depths of large bodies of water and eats humans. . Belief in the creature includes most Native American tribes, including the Algonquian. As such, the animal has many names—Misiginebig, Mishi-Ginebig, Ginebik, Uktena, etc.—depending on the indigenous group, but they all mean "great serpent." . Perhaps that Safe Harbor diver didn't bump into a giant catfish in the murky waters behind the dam but Misiginebig, who wandered up from the deeps looking for something to eat. . What do you think? It continues to baffle me to this day why the third wild rose set has a very similar color scheme to Gilded Phoenix considering they’re using a lot of the same models, but I’m very happy to see this ship set has changed quite drastically from what it used to look like (like the icons). The hull is fantastic and it’s a great base for combos! All the deck items are wonderful in color and match which not only the hull but lots of other hulls I tested. The sails, while a bit basic are still really nice! And the figurehead is my favorite color variation of that model! Finally doesn’t just look like some corpse on the front of the boat. N·X·S (Nichols Expert School), Best Business School in America, Saint Paul, Minnesota, ca. 1910 With its illustration of a three-story tall man standing in a normal-sized street, this postcard reminds me of the tall-tale and exaggeration postcards that were popular in the early twentieth century. Those cards, however, typically featured gigantic ears of corn and humongous fish rather than mammoth men. Bonnie Wilson describes this postcard in her book Minnesota in the Mail: A Postcard History (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2004): "The giant man pointing proudly to the Nichols Expert School on Sixth and Wabasha in St. Paul is founder Malcolm Emery Nichols. In 1906 the school moved into its new ten-thousand-square-foot space filled with custom-designed furniture where it offered courses in all skills needed to be a first-class secretary or court reporter. . . . The school operated in this location until 1940, when Mr. Nichols retired." My copy of the card is unused with no postmark, but Wilson dates it to 1910. Are you an outlaw or a lawman? I think if we are truly honest, we are a little bit of both. @amy.harmon.author reminded me of that in her newest novel: The Outlaw Noble Salt. It’s a historical fiction/ tall tale of the infamous Butch Cassidy. In an effort to live a noble life, Butch is ready to become someone else. Noble Salt. This is one of the hardest books I’ve had to write a review. I gave myself a few days to ponder and reflect, but the feels have turned off the logical part of my brain. Does that happen to you? Your feelings get in the way. Some words I will be sending directly to Amy, because reading this book made me feel like I got to know her more deeply. I could tell (and I could be wrong) that she poured her very own heart and soul into this story. Right now those words are two simple ones: thank you. To be honest, I words don’t come naturally to me. Even with time to process. But art does. I think my way of thanking authors and encouraging you to read their books is through my photos and reels. It’s my version of a love note. These images and all their layers give you a glimpse of what the story meant to me. Not only does this story show readers the challenges of leaving the past in the past; but we are reminded that love in its greatest form is sacrificial. I’m afraid that all my favorite parts and elements of the story are huge spoilers. About 15 years ago, I was on a tour of Safe Harbor Dam while taking the Hands-on History of Lancaster County course through Millersville University. Our guide, a retired employee, said they periodically send divers down behind the dam to remove large underwater debris like sunken trees. One time a diver went down only to resurface a few minutes later. He quickly climbed out, announcing he was quitting! . The reason? In the murky depths, he claimed to see a creature large enough to eat him. . Truth be told, every hydroelectric dam in the country has some version of this story. However, there might be a kernel of truth to this fishy-sounding tale. Catfish, for example, never stop growing. . Slide one (courtesy of @brucenickles) lends additional credibility to the local man-eating monster tale. This 46-pound beast was caught from the Safe Harbor Dam fishing pier on September 26, 2022. . Giant catfish may not be the Susquehanna's only monsters. At least one petroglyph at Safe Harbor might depict another (slide two). This curved image might portray a Misiginebig (slide three). They are giant underwater serpents. Described as being as large around as a tree trunk, with horns on its head, a bright blazing crest on its forehead, and scales glowing like sparks of fire. The Misiginebig lurks in the depths of large bodies of water and eats humans. . Belief in the creature includes most Native American tribes, including the Algonquian. As such, the animal has many names—Misiginebig, Mishi-Ginebig, Ginebik, Uktena, etc.—depending on the indigenous group, but they all mean "great serpent." . Perhaps that Safe Harbor diver didn't bump into a giant catfish in the murky waters behind the dam but Misiginebig, who wandered up from the deeps looking for something to eat. . What do you think?
