Can you believe it?? It's race week!! 😊🔥 Well - to be honest, I am not yet ready. The last few days were far from ideal, but things are improving quickly and there is still plenty of time to recover well and get excited!! 😁 (also two days packed with work first 😅). Considering everything that happened during the last couple of months I am incredibly happy to be at this point now at all. I am about to finally toeing the line again and I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to this moment! 🥰 This first race will all be about celebrating being back running up and down mountains after a more than difficult autumn/winter period. October 14th: 1st bike crash - concussion, open face and bone oedema in the kneecap/femur January 27th: 2nd bike crash (accident) - inflammation of the bursa (What meant to be the "less severe" injury kept me from proper running for almost 8 weeks) Last week: Fall onto the twice injured knee during my long run, some abrasions but luckily no further severe damage. Two days ago: extreme calf tightening out of nowhere (had this before, nasty one, but luckily never long-lasting) So yeah - I better get racing again before something else happens! 🤦🏻♀️ Looking forward to the trip to @transvulcania and just a fantastic day enjoying the beautiful landscapes of La Palma. @bvgtrail blev en særdeles hård omgang hvor der nok skulle graves lidt dybere end jeg havde forestillet mig 💪 . Især fordi jeg desværre på forhånd havde undervurderet den sidste stigning 🙈 . Der blevet løbet med fint overskud og ro til at opleve de fantastiske bjerge og det vildt smukke område omkring et vandfald, vi skulle passere både ud og hjem 👌 . Men med 11 km igen mødte vi sidste stigning, som var super stejl de første cirka 500 hm. Mine ben lå hele tiden tæt på krampe og jeg måtte tage den alvorlig meget med ro. Den sidste km mod toppen foregik med reb og kæder for at komme op (Første billede). Vildt fedt og sindssyg flot udsigt over Gardasøen 🤩 . Da jeg når toppen (sidste billede) er jeg totalt mast og kan har svært ved at løbe de sidste 7 km hjem. De var ikke super svære, men bare ret meget nedad 🏔 . Det var en super fin oplevelse og hele arrangementet var godt arrangeret. Don't really know if I should be crying or laughing today! Although I already knew it somewhere in my head for a few weeks I now finally pulled the plug and definitely won't race @miutmadeira. I am quite a bit sad about this, but its the only rational decision after the tricky recovery from bike crash nr 2. Its not worth it at all to risk the rest of the season and instead I will focus on a proper build-up and more "healthy" comeback 😉 ... and a whole summer full of cool mountain adventures! Today its exactly two months after crash nr. 2 and after quite a dry spell in February I know feel not only much better but also the confidence in my knee improves with every day (and every training session!). Most importantly I can do now longer rides again (which I greatly enjoy!) and also spend some hours on my feet (🏔🥰). The downhills still have to wait a bit, but I continue to take it step by step. The really cool thing is that I am now absolutely stoked for summer. With a regular training schedule becoming reality again but mountains still covered in snow I hope I will be fit in time as soon as the trails are runable again! 😊 I still don't know when I will be able to race again or better: when I want to start racing this season. I only want to toe the line with a completely recovered knee, well-prepared and with confidence. I'm missing the mountains. Terribly! They are my happy place and I can't wait to finally go back 😊 At least I am back to something like a regular training schedule. Not so much on the running side, but at least on the bike which is amazing 🥰 the running is improving though and I have high hopes to return to the trails soon 🏔 While I'm still waiting for my body to be back at 100% again and for all the snow to melt I already dream of all the great adventures to come this summer - can't wait! One thing I love the most in the mountains is collecting VERT. FORWARD. After many baby steps last week, this week included some actual leaps. Not knowing if I would be able to train at all, I still went to Mallorca to catch some sun and get a change of scenery. It was the right decision. Luckily I found my way back to cycling rather quickly - the knee even improved! I am just so happy to be back on the bike, cycling through the sun (although its incredibly windy!) and through wonderful lamdscapes. I truly missed this so much and cannot wait for all the cycling adventures coming up this summer! 😊 But wait - whats with the trails? No worries, they are still my greatest passion, but it still needs some more caution after the injury. However, I am back with a mix of scrambling/hiking/uphill running which is great. I am not back yet to 100% confidence, but it will come. Progress! It was a good week and I am just so happy that finally we go in the right direction ↗️😊 Day by day I get a bit more confident on the knee again. At the same time I listen intently to the signs my body gives me. Its for sure not easy to keep the right balance between a next step forward and enough rest to give the body the chance to adapt! For now I am very optimistic though. Recovering from an injury is never easy. Its always ups and downs and usually all you wish for is to have a healthy body again! But - its part of the game. Although there was some bad luck involved this time with two crashes in a row! 🙈 Unfortunately, after initially recovering quickly from my crash with a car, the last week was more like a setback. There is still some inflammation in my knee which needs rest and good care. Which means a couple more very easy days with some swimming and the good old core work (who knows what it will be good for? 🤷🏻♀️). Definitely not what I wish for, but hopefully I will soon be able to move more again. Light and shadow... I've had plenty of the latter in the last few days, but then, thankfully, there is also some light in it. Exactly 15 weeks after my bike crash in October, I crashed again 🤦🏻♀️. However, this time it was an accident where there was nothing I could do, when the driver of a car didn't see me and ignored my right of way. Obviously, after recognizing the damage on my bike I was angry - how should I ride back home with such a wreck? Then I came back to my senses - probably it was not such a good idea to ride on anyways as I wasn't able to stand on my right leg 😏 Well, instead I got a ride with the ambulance and they took good care of me (and my bike!) - thanks for that! But yeah, unfortunately I crashed onto my right knee - again. By now I know that I was lucky in several regards - no other damage than the knee and also the knee is not as badly injured as in October! Yes, it hurts to know that I won't be able to run for a couple of weeks and that it will take some time to get back to proper training and race prep! So defo no trip to TGC. We spent sometime this past weekend on orcas island for one of my favorite races! Unfortunately, I knew coming into this race that I wasn’t near the fitness level I wanted to be. We initially were supposed to run it in 2023 until COVID stopped those plans. Since we already had everything booked we decided to go out there anyways and just use it as a long training run. I ran 20 miles of the course and decided that my body had enough, while Nick went on to finish in the pouring rain. The rest of the weekend we enjoyed a cute Airbnb right outside of Moran state park and spent time with family cooking food and hanging out. This morning we hopped on the ferry and saw one of the most beautiful sunrises ever and already can’t wait to head back next year. Get up at 4:30. Train to the mountains at 5:15. Start moving at 6:55. Get in 4 hours of movement, sun and fresh air. Train back at 11:30. Back in the office at 13:30 to get the "other" work done. Most of my days look like this right now (replace skimo by running, cycling, swimming, gym...), and somehow I love it (and need it). Discipline is key, but when you get rewarded with a sunrise above the fog, its a reward for everything, right? Trailrunning is very much an individual sport. Once the race has started, you are on your own - sometimes for hours on end (which I love very much! 😁). And still, trailrunning is also a team sport. Because - isn't it way more fun to bring along a crew? And how cool is it when you can share a mountain adventure? When someone enables you to take part in an amazing race? Thank you, 2023. You have been very kind to me. This year was special. Yes - I had some pretty awesome races and adventures and I am beyond grateful for these experiences 😊 These days have been unique and I will carry those wonderful memories forever with me 🏔 But what is even more important to me is that I finally was able to grow, as a person. To let go of some demons (by far not all but hey - it's a start!) and finally start to actually live with more joy. One of the things I love most about running in the mountains is that I am outdoors all the time 🏔 Which is what I miss incredibly during wintertime! A lot of training now happens indoors, be it on the turbo, in the pool or in the gym. In addition I spend a lot of time at work - indoors of course! I hope that this will change a bit now as I am finally able to give Skimo a try - yay! 😊 I've wanted to do this for a long time because - well you are outdoors, in the mountains and moving uphill!! So I can't wait to do more of this in the coming weeks and months. Our trip to Acadia/Maine was amazing and beautiful. We lucked out with only 1 day of rain. Maine was by far one of our best trips. Ate all the lobster and had so much fun on our “babymoon”. Acadia Day 1: Precipice and Beehive Trail in one go. Followed by our first lobster roll of the trip. Guided audio tour of the entire island ending with drinks and a hot tub. Acadia Day 2: Cadillac Mountain Sunrise with beautiful moonset, boat tour of the bay with lighthouses, seals, whales oh my! Oysters and a hike out to Bar Island. With a very cool full moon. Acadia Day 3: easy start to the day and an awesome hike up to Champlain Mtn. Even snuck in a cold plunge in the only Fjord on the east coast. Followed by a long drive to Portland. Portland Day 1 was classic vacation for us tons of rain and wind. But good exploring; food and great beer. Even found some Fairy Houses in the woods. Last day was quick coffee and Holy Donuts. TOR 2023 or: falling in love with a race This year was quite special for me. Big races, fantastic results. I am super grateful for these experiences 😊 And yet, I needed something else. A true adventure. Less of a "race", more of "just being out there". A true challenge. I found it @tordesgeants. Although it was also my first ever DNF for some reason 😉, I couldn't have wished for a better adventure! Why? The course 🌄: The Aosta valley trails are simply amazing. A great mix between smooth, runable singletrails, rocky mountain paths and technical alpine cols. With UTMB still in my mind I was delighted by the more technical nature of TOR. And the vert!!! Basically you are either climbing or descending, there are almost no flat parts. Love it! The people 🥳: The community around this race is unique. Beginning with the runners itself, that are all looking for this adventure beyond the more commercial races. The organizers who plan and execute everything with all their heart. The spectators who cheer you on and encourage you with an incredible enthusiasm no matter how fast or slow you are, how good or bad you feel. And finally - the volonTORs, who make the race what it is. I love running in the mountains. It makes me feel free, alive, confident. But most of all, it makes me incredibly happy 🥰 Yes - I am also an elite athlete now. And I am very grateful for this opportunity. But to be honest, that was never the plan. Although I am very ambitious, the most important thing to me was always to have fun. I am actually convinced that without this primary "goal" I would not be where I am now. I know that only if I have fun, if I can enjoy the training process, the races, then I can be successful. Of course it can't be always fun. Some days training is just tough and thats OK! Some races are tough and thats part of the game! But if you ask me whats more important to me - a high UTMB score or simply having a good time on the trails - my answer is quite clear 🌄 Trailrunning is just so much more to me than only race results. I know myself and my body very well by now. I've made many mistakes which taught me a lot. And as much as I love races, I love adventures. Simply spending time in the mountains, challenging myself. One could argue that something like me starting at TOR only one week after UTMB is just stupid. That I could threaten my athletic career. Thats not how I see it. For me, this is also part of this sport. Adventure. Challenge. Not being at 100% but enjoying it to the fullest (which I did!). I know my body and this is exactly why I decided to drop out of TOR. But I loved every minute of that race. Yes, it may seem a bit crazy but for me, this is what this sport is all about and why I am so passionate about it. I will always do races but at the same time I will always do adventures. The latter is as important to me as the first. So I guess I will just continue to do my own thing, as I think it worked out quite well this year? 😉 Soon more about my TOR adventure but I felt the need to write these words today! I love this sport with all its facettes, but most of all because it makes me happy - no matter the race results. Det har været nogle enormt frustrationsfyldte dage efter løbet i lørdags 🤯 . Egentlig ikke så meget over at jeg udgik, men mere efter den kropslige tilstand her efterfølgende 🤔 . Kan ikke mindes jeg har haft så ondt i mine ben før - måske efter ét af mine første, lange løb... men sgu ikke efter blot 35 km 🙈 . Jeg har stadig svært ved at gå på trapper og det gør sågar ondt i lårene når jeg cykler. Det er vildt og jeg forstår det simpelthen ikke! Efter de 70 km til Zugspitze var jeg ikke tilnærmelsesvis så medtaget. . De sidste måneder har jeg haft ret meget fornuftig træning. Chamonix i maj, Zugspitze juni og bjergene ved Limone i juli. Så havde virkelig ikke set den her komme. . Det skal selvfølgelig tages til efterretning fremadrettet - jeg kommer ikke til at kunne træne mere, end jeg gør. Og jeg går hver gang efter at løbet skal være en oplevelse. . You inspire me. Some people told me this during the past few months and tbh, this is one of the nicest compliments to get! Via Valais. 5 days of running&hiking, beautiful trails, amazing views (or just no views at all) and a wild mix of weather conditions! ☀️🌧🌬☃️ Just the perfect combination of training, vacation and adventure 😊 started in Le Châble for two days of solo running before I finally met with @eva.maria.sperger to continue together from Evoléne. We mostly slept on huts at altitude which added to the adventure and challenges of this trip! 🌄 While the finish line should have been in Zermatt, I decided to stop after five days and almost 200k. I was still feeling good but I know my body and didn't want to risk any type of injury. Keep smiling 😁 Well, I have to admit that during some stages of this years @eigerultratrail I had to put on a poker face. Particularly during the first few hours, when my stomach just did not cooperate and I felt horribly sick. And also later on when a stabbing sensation in my glute made for some rather painful running. Or during the final, ridiculously steep climb in the heat. But then, we also love to suffer. It is part of this sport and why we are doing it. And if you can manage a smile, it always helps! 😊 Grinding up the steep moraine of the Eigergletscher I felt this weird satisfaction which results from pushing yourself to your limits while still enjoying it. Annual Sentinel Pilgrimage. None of my Missoula trips are complete with a little adventure up to Sentinel. And this one was a bear to be sure Smokejumper->University->down and back up Sentinel-> Pengelly Ridge. Overall not too bad, made it to university mountain in 1:09. Then despite having already ran 8.5 miles with 3,000ft of climbing did the M in 12 minutes, my second sentinel summit in 38 minutes. There never seems to be enough time when on vacation. We just got back from Washington state over Memorial Day weekend and had the most amazing time. I can't believe how accessible the trails were this early on. It really felt like summer! The first full day we had, we drove up on Highway 20 to El Diablo Lake and ran an 8 mile trail run to the dam. The lake was probably the largest turquoise lake I have ever seen! Balance... something which is not always easy to achieve when trying to train professional and do a regular job at the same time. Especially not when you try to finish a PhD! Trying to balance 55-60hrs of work, 30+hrs related to training, other obligations and the all important sleep feels a bit like madness in some moments. Not to mention the need to take a breath from time to time 😌 This week has been tough, the next few weeks will be tough.
