Daisy and I got out of dodge and attempted Granite Mountain last week. I couldn't get her safely across the final rock climb with steps too big for her and a huge cornice too close for her to go around the big steps, so we stopped a bit shy of the summit. I made her sit patiently while I went up a little further, but I didn't want to leave her too long. We had fun, we had peeps, we had a zebra sighting (🦓 😳 IYKYK 😆), and we didn't see any humans until we were on our way back down. There is still so much snow and massive cornices. I hear a warm up is on the way next weekend. Myrtle Warbler at blue hour . Here in the West, our common Yellow-rumped Warbler subspecies is the Audubon’s. These cheery birds arrive in mid March and breed on Vancouver Island. The common subspecies in the East, the ‘Myrtle’ warbler, is a migrant in our region. Breeding north of us in the boreal forest, these masked bandits overtake their cousins in abundance for the last two weeks of April. These migrants can be found almost everywhere, and I hung out with a flock at the mouth of a river at sunset. Sometimes the birds would land close to my position and that’s how I took this photo. . We’ve made a tradition of driving out to the steppe every April. The hills to the east of the Cascades are so distinctive—endless fields of balsamroot and lupine, meadowlarks singing in the sagebrush, and the sparse shade and sweet scent of Ponderosa pines. Our favorite places loom large on the horizon, still buried in snow, but these hills give us a little taste of those lengthy days on the trail we’ve been longing for all winter. 🥾
