What an epic evening in Singapore with my dearest friend @les_amoureuses_27, very happy to meet you there my buddy. Lovely place as well, my first time going to the Pall Mall. The place is just beautiful and has good wine selection. I decided to go with this Paul Pillot GR 2017, an estate I particularly like. Classic touch of reduction at the beginning. The wine is actually a little more closed than Clos Saint Jean that I had some time ago. Lovely array of white fruits, juicy with good purity. The wine will evolve quite a lot during the tasting. It had some more creamy phases, almost bit lactic, and more mineral and fruit oriented moments. The palate is rather straight, slightly waxy, with intense mineral background and a slightly toasted profile. Good depth. Full of energy with a nice kick from the acidity. I think it might be a little early for this terroir. Grande Montagne and Clos Saint Jean are maybe more accessible young. Or simply that after several years of good pleasure, 2017 is going to a dormant phase. It remains fresh and totally suited for longer aging though. Cheers Josh, see you soon! A rare bottle of Lamy-Caillat Caillerets. This was a little bonus after our crazy Krug tasting in Grindelwald. Always good to add some extra Chardonnay after so many bubbles. I have tasted the regular Bourgogne 2018 and didn’t like it so much. They are part of the awkward 2018 whites in Burgundy, with a very atypical expression. Well, I can’t say this one was much better. The nose shows quite ripe and open, this is rather enticing. Intense minerality and rocky character. Some fruit that shows quite ripe, but not so sure about its definition. Same as other 2018s, a little lactic and dull. Hard to describe precisely. Not much complexity at this stage, the wine is young. The palate has high acidity, surprising for the hot vintage, and also has this intense mineral stony character. I don’t feel much oak here, it is well integrated. More orchard fruits and important energy, quite lemony and austere. Limited depth and length here, this is a little disappointing. I think Caillerets deserves more time, but I tried my luck with this supposed riper vintage. I honestly enjoyed other vintages better (2014 and 2017). Really can’t understand the crazy market price either. Well, that’s now so common in Burgundy, if it’s rare it’s necessarily crazy good and expensive. Meh. My first ever encounter with Dom Ruinart Rose Champagne 2004...its such a vinous and full-bodied Champagne. It's probably the best Rose Champagne I have ever had so far simply stunning.
It is always a real pleasure to receive emails from the absolute legend @stephen.carrier.102, about the most recent harvest. We, as young wine lovers, owe a lot to this man and @chateaufieuzal as this is where all of our passion started, in 2013. Memorable evening at Fieuzal, and later on in Paris for a special dinner. We enjoyed these 2 bottles of Fieuzal blanc 2016 last summer during our August holidays. Not an easy vintage in terms of weather and winemaking I assume. 60% Sauvignon blanc and 40% Sémillon. A wine that showed rather discreet and refined. Very fresh still, with watermelon and juicy white peaches and pears. Mostly about orchard fruits, with a hint of lilies and fresh almonds. Some wet box tree leaves as well. Perfumed and elegant. The palate shows an easy flow, medium concentration with good acidity. A little bit of honey but the wine shows rather vertical with good energy and a soft mineral background. More juicy white fruits. Good finish. Useless to tell that both bottles ended up empty way too fast. Poke to @wine_uncorked @tristanc29 @rickyrozett for the great memories too 🎉. A very in shape bottle of Colin-Morey, that we had blind during our last October tasting. Super nice and clean. Last time, we had a slightly corked Ancégnières 2014. Corks can be fragile and it wasn’t the first time to meet a bad bottle from this estate. This one showed super open immediately after pouring. Matchstick and gun powder, classic signature. Waxy with a large array of fresh white fruits, mostly peaches and apples. A bit smoky with some pop corn. Very yummy! The palate has nice texture, denser than I expected. Quite oily and greasy, sticks to the tongue, while preserving good acidity and freshness, plus good bitterness. Quite mineral as well with some additional rocky scents. Silex and limestone. After almost 10 years, the wine is still in great shape and there is no need to rush. Thank you for sharing this nice bottle! A very nice bottle of Initial to start off our lunch. This one was disgorged in 2021, really cool with a little bit of age. I really seldom drink Initial to be honest, my natural choice basically always go to V.O. that I really like. No specific notes taken here, but a beautiful nutty profile, with cream and apples. Rather ripe overall, with good spiciness. The palate is more saline and vertical than I expected. The Selosse style is here, but quite integrated. Additional touch of quince and honey. Quite fresh with limited complexity so far. Good bitterness. Crystallum Single Vineyard Ferrum Chardonnay 2021 This is easily a top three SA Chardonnay I’ve had in recent memory. Grapes sourced from 12 year old vines located within a seven hectare vineyard block on iron rich soils at Shaw’s Mountain in the Overberg. The nose showed aromatics of seductive lemony tangerine notes of yellow citrus pastille, subtle salted toffee and delicate vanilla wood spice nuances over a flinty minerality. The palate is full, mineral and perfectly balanced with a luxurious textural mouthfeel displaying hints of caramelised lemons and lime peel. The icing on the cake, fantastic length and finish too! Another very impressive, precise and seamless expression of Chardonnay here. Drinking so so well now but those with patience you can rest assured patience will reward you well. Can easily sit for 10 plus years. Only 3256 bottles produced. Purchased on an allocation a while ago. I’ll cherish the rest of bottles I have of this vintage.
