The reason I ask is that Death Valley is so big, often time when people say they have been to the Death Valley, they have not been to some of the spots I’ve been to. There are so much beauty in this National Park. We are getting close to that Death part of the Death Valley National Park (not recommended to travel between the months of June-August) when the summer passes (if it does not rain like it did in the last two years) Fall season is a great time for an elopement here. Depending on the type of backdrops you like, they have everything. - Sand Dunes - Cliff - Salt Flats - Amazing Landscape - or even one of the most beautiful night skies in the U.S. Yes they really have everything and unlike the name of the National Park, it is quite beautiful and romantic place. oh and FYI, if you have a few more guests, there’s a wonderful venue in Death Valley National Park as well. 140 parsecs to nowhere. Rho Ophiuchi rises above Mesquite Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park. Tracked, Stacked, and Blended. The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is a complex of interstellar clouds with different nebulae, particularly a dark nebula which is centered 1° south of the star Ophiuchi. At an estimated distance of about 140 parsecs, or 460 light years, it is one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System. Tracked and Stacked Star Image using iOptron SkyGuider Pro 12 shots at ISO 800, 50mm, f/1.2, 60 seconds each. Blended with foreground image at ISO 800, 50mm, f/4, 2 minutes. A little over a week ago I set off on a big 6week camping trip around the western United States. My goals were to visit a few national parks, see some cool animals and scenery, and take some even cooler pics. While I’m no where near done with my trip (only about 1/4th of the way there) I feel I have already accomplished my goals. Which should make me really happy, and it does, but it also makes me sad. Because the day before I left for my trip my grandmother passed away. And one of the reasons that has been so hard is because she was one of the biggest supporters of my photography, my trip, and almost everything else I had going on. She was really excited to see all the photos I was going to take and to hear all about my trip once I got back. And each great experience I have out her has that grain of sadness because I am not able to tell her about it. And that’s something I’m still coming to terms with. I chose to make this photo of the night sky in Death Valley the first post of my trip, because I think it would’ve been the photo my grandmother liked the most. I can’t explain why I think she would have loved it more than my other photos. I just do. Call it a gut feeling. I hope it brings you guys as much joy as it would have brought her. The memories of this night are still very vivid on my mind. By this point in my life, I had already gotten a deep appreciation for what the desert is, but this night in particular, is what made me fall in love with it. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere else, where I’ve reflected as much as I have in the desert. Walking through these landscapes, with nothing else around you.. it’s very mind opening. I can’t begin to describe to you what it’s like to be alone here. The peace of mind you get with no sort of noise, other than that of the wind, the sound of your breathing, the brightness of the night sky, even with a sliver of moon above you, and sound of the earth crackling under you as you walk. Every time I come to these sort of places, I feel a deeper connection with the earth, but I also feel something greater, something beyond that. I’m not a religious person whatsoever, but every time I come and find myself alone in these places, I feel more attached to life. I value more. Things have meaning. It’s like I walk away with a deeper understanding. I’m not a perfect person. I struggle. I have things that weigh me down. I have many mistakes that I can’t take back. But.. I wake up every day, and I keep going. Life doesn’t have to happen, but it does. Life is an unexpected gift, that we all must cherish, even with our mistakes. I’m happy where I am, and where I’m going. And sorry for the long story, but thank you for taking the time to read it lol. Racetrack Playa in Death Valley is known for its super dark skies and mysterious moving rocks. Since not to many people are willing to make the grueling and bumpy 25 mile drive over a rough and washboard road, it is a one of a kind location for astrophotographers. On the night my group of four photographers went to the playa, we saw just one other photographer. I stayed up the entire night looking at the zillion stars in the skies, the Milky Way and watched a few meteors and falling stars play in the sky above me. Death Valley National Park serves amazing night skies most days of the year, even on those featuring 98.92% moon illumination. Here is Death Valley's Racetrack playa bathed under 98.92% illumination. Despite the high amount of natural light pollution, the night sky remains superior (try this at home). Although it is affected by distant sources of light pollution, the International Dark-Sky Association designated Death Valley National Park as a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park, the highest rating of darkness. April 5-12 is International Dark Sky week. Do yourself a big favor and get outside to enjoy it. I am often asked if I photograph the night sky as you won't find any such photographs on my website. I live under the night sky a great many nights each year. The truth is I only photograph it casually, sometimes, and only when I feel the motivation. I am not a night owl - I am tuned to the sun - and as one who spends a great many tent-less nights each year falling asleep under that deep cerulean sky, I always find something missing from the resulting photographs: the actual experiencing of intently observing the night sky. You know what I am talking about if you've messed around with a camera during the wee hours; the technicality of the process overrides the joy of the experience. I'd rather not.
