This was really a beautiful canyon! Our last hike in Death Valley was up Mosaic Canyon. This one featured really cool rock deposits called breccia. It forms when landslide deposits are cemented together with water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate. It's then exposed from the erosion caused by the water flowing thru the canyon! This 4 mile hike also features some fun rock scrambles and narrow canyon passages. . 🥾𝐇𝐈𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐘 𝐍𝐏🥾 📍𝑀𝑂𝑆𝐴𝐼𝐶 𝐶𝐴𝑁𝑌𝑂𝑁 𝑇𝑅𝐴𝐼𝐿 Length~4 miles round trip Level~Moderate This out and back trail starts by taking you through a polished marble narrow stretch of the canyon (actually probably the best part of the hike) and then the canyon opens up more showing off it’s beautiful multi colored rocks and mosaic patterns. As you near the last mile or so of the trail there is some rock scrambling and bouldering. Not too difficult though. Some of these areas have been smoothed out by the water so be careful not to slip. I actually literally slid down one on my way back down like a slide. I would consider this a moderate hike with a slight elevation gain of 1,200ft. on the way up which makes for an easier hike on the way back. At the end of the trail you will come to a dry fall and a nice shaded area to have a snack and rest. Most of the trail is sunny with only small parts of the trail shaded so be prepared and bring plenty of water. Because we couldn't do everything, I had to choose between the Mosaic Canyon trail and going to Darwin Falls, and I believe I made the right choice. Mosaic Canyon was super cool and Nathan loved the rock scrambling we had to do as we got closer to the end of the trail (the 20+ ft dry waterfall). Not gonna lie, there are a couple places I'm not sure I could have gotten up without their help. The one spot, photo 8, I thought for a second that's where the trail went and I was like nooooooonononono. Thankfully there was another way! Mosaic Canyon Trail in Death Valley National Park 🏜 Distance: 3.7 miles / 6.06 km Elevation Gain: 1,200 feet / 355 meters Duration: 2.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate One of the most exciting hiking trails in Death Valley. The first part of the trail is definitely the most beautiful and popular as the smooth marble rocks tempt its visitors to hop from one side to the other of the narrow canyon. Taking the entire hike and reaching the impressive 25 feet tall dry fall at the end of it is definitely worth it! 🏞 On the way back down, we couldn't help but venture to the side along a narrow footpath and got to admire one of the best sceneries in Death Valley. The memories of this night are still very vivid on my mind. By this point in my life, I had already gotten a deep appreciation for what the desert is, but this night in particular, is what made me fall in love with it. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere else, where I’ve reflected as much as I have in the desert. Walking through these landscapes, with nothing else around you.. it’s very mind opening. I can’t begin to describe to you what it’s like to be alone here. The peace of mind you get with no sort of noise, other than that of the wind, the sound of your breathing, the brightness of the night sky, even with a sliver of moon above you, and sound of the earth crackling under you as you walk. Every time I come to these sort of places, I feel a deeper connection with the earth, but I also feel something greater, something beyond that. I’m not a religious person whatsoever, but every time I come and find myself alone in these places, I feel more attached to life. I value more. Things have meaning. It’s like I walk away with a deeper understanding. I’m not a perfect person. I struggle. I have things that weigh me down. I have many mistakes that I can’t take back. But.. I wake up every day, and I keep going. Life doesn’t have to happen, but it does. Life is an unexpected gift, that we all must cherish, even with our mistakes. I’m happy where I am, and where I’m going. And sorry for the long story, but thank you for taking the time to read it lol. In the span of 3 days, I hiked in Nevada, Arizona and California. This one took me just South of Death Valley to another amazing desertscape. We did a loop and tagged a couple peaks. One of which had a permanent hand line to help get up and down a very loose and steep climb. It started and ended at the China Data Ranch. Highly recommend the chocolate chip date cookies and date smoothie. I tried to convince Norah to put on a flowy head scarf and toss some red glitter in the air to do a Dune photoshoot (I even offered to give her blue eyes in Photoshop), but no dice. 😆 Panamint Sand Dunes was still a highlight of our Death Valley trip though. From a distance the dunes look like mere blips in the landscape and not impressive at all. And while the approach was only three miles it never felt like we were getting closer and the sand was a slog. But it was all worth it - the dunes were big up close and we had a ball hiking around them. It was a bonus that we had them completely to ourselves. Hiking Death Valley's Desolation Canyon, where some of the scenes from the original 1977 Star Wars movie were filmed! If you remember, Luke Skywalker lived on a desert planet called Tatooine, and most of those scenes were filmed in Tunisia. As the water evaporates, minerals concentrate until only the salts remain. Sodium Chloride is the main source for the majority of salts on Badwater Basin. Colourful layers vary from sandstone, yellowish to reddish or orange-coloured conglomerates, loosely cemented together by calcite, make up the exposed bedrock in Ubehebe’s walls. These sediments contain limestone, mudstone, quartzite & volcanic cobbles. . Death Valley- our last National Park. It was so HOT and I was very nervous to drive through there. This past weekend they reached an all time record high of 130 degrees!! I’ve always heard so many stories of folks breaking down there and being stranded. We made it! But I can say I was happy to head on out of there.
