Does she know she has been fighting her entire life? She fought to get nourishment and to breathe. She continues to fight for comfort, fight for words, and fight for peace within her own body and mind. Does she know she was born into a world that wasn’t built for her? Does she know I will move heaven and earth to find the right tools to give her so she can walk through this world as safely and peacefully as she can? Does she know that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes? Does she know how deeply she has been loved by so many in her life? Loved by certain teachers, paras, and therapists that went above and beyond to create goals for success and strategies to work through some of her hardest days and moments Love by grandparents that have learned and do as much as they can to help her feel comfortable at home. Loved by siblings fiercely and unconditionally. They stepped up to teach, advocate for, care for, and protect her at all costs. Loved by parents that would give up everything to make sure she has what she needs on a daily basis. Parents that will care for her the rest of their days. Parents that will try to have the best possible plan in place for her once they are no longer able to care for her. Parents that are so proud of the warrior she is because she works hard every single day on things others don’t even have to think about. Does she know I will continue to stand right beside her in this fight? I will advocate as hard as I can. I will advocate for her to be seen, advocate for her to be heard, advocate for assistance, advocate for her health, advocate for her dignity, and advocate for her safety. Does she know? When I swipe through autism reels I see many of my brothers and sisters bringing up comments “autism moms” or “autism dads” arguing what these autism influencers are doing is attention seeking behavior and that their autism isn’t real because of these posts. I must ask does your autistic child not want attention? Or is this about what you are going through as their parents? Here is why I post on Instagram and why my fellow aspies do for most part…. We want join the fight for our place in this world…. We want also speak for our brothers and sisters who have higher needs because according to the DSM book we are on same spectrum as your child… let us speak for our own culture. Autism parents deserve their own platform and support….and I and other influencers for most part are here help you understand better. If you were to adopt a child from China and you wanted that child to know his or her heritage would you turn to a Yale scholar or someone who lives it? That Yale scholar had a bias and misses the little nuances of the Chinese culture. The same principal can we apply to the autism culture but still you gaslight my brothers and sisters… please listen and ask questions. Perhaps even let your autistic children watch these reels so they can see someone like them understand and explain what they are going through, that there is nothing wrong with them a different culture than their parents and that’s OK. I will never forget my very first bra because I absolutely hated it. It was a training bra that didn’t have any padding or wiring but it was so uncomfortable. The straps dug into my shoulders, the band squeezed my ribs and the claps sat so stiff against my back. All the other kids my age were so excited to finally wear bras but I couldn’t stand it. My mom would force me put on a bra while getting ready for school but as soon as she dropped me off, I would go into the bathroom, take it off and hide it in my backpack until the end of the day and then put it back on before she picked me up. Luckily, I have always been smaller chested, and I was able to get away with this for a while until I had to start dressing out for P.E. in middle school. All the other girls in my class were freely able to change into their gym clothes without exposing themselves because they wore bras. I would hide in the corner of the locker room and pull my gym shirt over my regular shirt and then take my regular shirt off underneath my gym shirt. Other girls started to notice what I was doing and would ask me why I didn’t have a bra on which made me feel embarrassed, so I started wearing a bra throughout the day to avoid their unwanted attention. As a teenager/young adult I discovered sports bras and bralettes. I started wearing them exclusively because I couldn’t stand thin straps, padding, underwire and clasp. In my mid 20’s I got an office job and started wearing seamless bras without padding, wires, and back clasps. That is what I mostly wear today. A otto mesi, mi sono accorta che era affascinata da cose alle quali gli altri miei figli non avevano mai prestato attenzione. Al contrario, se qualcuno cercava la sua attenzione, il suo contatto visivo, lei si comportava come se non esistessero. Ho pensato che fosse molto particolare o forse che fosse una prerogativa femminile visto che io avevo avuto solo maschi.⠀ Quando ha iniziato a camminare non lo faceva mai come gli altri: volteggiava, faceva avanti e indietro mille volte oppure rimaneva immobile con lo sguardo fisso in un punto della casa, come se ci fosse qualcosa che solo lei potesse vedere. Scoppiava a ridere dal nulla oppure scoppiava a piangere dal nulla. Pensavo fosse una bambina particolare, unica. ⠀ Quando aveva un anno e mezzo oltre a non lallare, ha iniziato ad avere crisi di pianto incontrollabili dove sbatteva di proposito la testa sul pavimento. ⠀ Per me era chiaro che mia figlia fosse diversa ma tutti attorno a me dicevano che mi facevo le paranoie. Stavo in piedi al semaforo con lei in braccio. È passato un treno e ha fatto un baccano tremendo. Abby si era comportata come se non avesse sentito niente. "È sorda!" ho pensato. Così l'ho portata dal medico che dopo averla visitata mi ha confermato che "la bambina stava benissimo e mi preoccupavo troppo".⠀ Al parco stava sempre sola e, anche se qualcuno voleva giocare con lei, lei non gli dava attenzione. ⠀ Mi ricordo la dolorosa svolta.⠀ " Cos'ha quella bambina mamma? perché non mi guarda?" ha detto una bimba al parco dopo averle urlato ciao mille volte.⠀ " È maleducata!" ha risposto bruscamente. ⠀ Quel giorno ho pianto tutte le mie lacrime. Sapevo che non era maleducata e che non era sorda. Ma allora che cosa c'era? ho fatto una ricerca delle sue caratteristiche e ho trovato AUTISMO.⠀ Da lì ho visto medici che mi dicevano di non preoccuparmi..che era presto...che era piccola. Ma io ero convinta e sono andata avanti imperterrita.⠀ A due anni finalmente mi hanno prescritto la visita dal neuropsichiatra infantile. Gli sono bastati venti minuti per dirmi: "Sua figlia è autistica! ma è piccolissima come ha fatto a capire?". Sesto senso materno. Quello che non sai spiegare ma c'è❤

When was the last time you celebrated yourself? As mums to autistic children we often get ridiculously over excited about things that our children do, that other people would consider small or meaningless, to the point that we want to tell everyone around us. It could be that our child tried a new food, managed to leave the house, got dressed by themselves or managed a whole day without a meltdown, we celebrate how amazing they are to manage something that had seemed impossible previously. It’s just a shame that we don’t extend the same excitement and courtesy to ourselves. We forget that we’re the ones always supporting them. We’re the ones showing extreme patience at times when we could easily scream, we’re the ones buying 20 packets of the same food so they never run out of what they like. We’re the ones having repeated conversations with various support services to find the right kind of help for them, we’re the ones that give up our careers to give them what they need, we’re the ones that that spend hours doing research. We’re the ones that fill out the endless forms, send endless emails and read endless books and follow endless links. We’re the ones that give them the time, space and unconditional love to be who they are. So, everyday, find something you did well and celebrate yourself for it. Every time you spoke to someone about your situation and didn’t cry…it’s a WIN. Every time you stopped yourself from slamming the phone down on yet another person that ‘just doesn’t get it’ it’s a WIN. Every time you got your child's name down on a waiting list (that could take years) it’s still a WIN. Every day that you showed up for work, exhausted, tired, stressed, but not beaten, it’s a WIN. When you manage to cook a meal instead of eating toast…it’s a WIN.
