Incredible camp near Scafell pike Saturday night with @iiicallumx we set off from Eskdale up the wet and boggy great moss trying to look for somewhere to cross the river as it was in full flow. All the way up was in mist so to finally reach mickledore and look down the other side to see wasdale head and then the mist starting to lift and clear giving us fantastic views for a couple hours at least. The forecast was for strong westerly winds through the night so opted for this area hoping Sca Fell would shelter us. But it seemed to be coming more from north so was actually Scafell pike offering us shelter. The winds weren’t as strong as forecasted tho we measured maximum of just over 30mph gusts on Scafell pike summit not long before sunset. Celebrating your kid’s achievements feels so much better than your own. Little Livvy, 5 years old at the top of Scafell Pike - The highest point in England 🏴 Yesterday was a tough day on the hills for any hiker. There was a point around 300m (elevation) from the summit the weather turned, the wind picked up and it became physically difficult for her little legs. We took a break and I asked her if she really wanted to continue… I said we could go back, get warm and try again another day. She said “No, I want to go to the top”. Totally her choice to struggle on. Moments like that give me an insight into the character she’s building and who she’s becoming. So so proud. 17.68km and 5hrs 30mins of hiking on the little legs. I said I’d give her £1 for every person she overtook on the way up and I now owe her £20 That’s 2 of the 3 National 3 Peaks done. Olivia turns 6yo on the 25th of June so we’ve got 2 months to get her up to Nevis and get the job done. Last week @abi_all4mnd and I took a trip to the Lake District to try out some peaks before the event. We weren’t able to climb as high as we wanted due to 80mph winds (sudden speedy gusts out of the blue are not fun). Admittedly, this has not helped my anxiety about doing the challenge as I was hoping a practise walk would reassure me. I am honestly filled with excitement but occasionally the anxiety takes over. I walk when I can but my mind still doesn’t think it’s enough. If I don’t get a walk in, it’s a waste. We have been getting long walks in most weeks and so many of us have so much more to juggle with it…work, family, kids… it’s not as easy as just walking out of the door. The guide @mountain.journeys has been exceptional and honest. He fully believes that with all the right training behind our belts it’s doable , but there will be the need for mental strength as well as the obvious physical strength. Both of which he has reiterated several times. We have had 7 months since the start of this journey and I definitely feel fitter thanks to weekly training. Now to make sure my mind is fully trained! Attempted Scafell Pike yesterday via the corridor route but severe winds turned me away from the summit. I was so close, but it just wasn’t worth being blown over more and putting myself at more risk. And that’s ok. A few shots from an awesome day taking David & Helen (who are over here on holiday from Australia), up to the summit of Scafell Pike and back again from Great Langdale - something they have had on their bucket list for a number of years. Despite the poor visibility & drizzly conditions, it really was such an enjoyable day and a pleasure to spend it with such a nice couple. At well over double the distance of the popular Wasdale Head route, doing Scafell Pike from Great Langdale is one of the longer and more challenging ways up, but is a fantastic and varied approach. They both absolutely smashed it and despite the weather kept saying how much they were enjoying themselves - they never stopped smiling. 14 miles there and back, directly from the door of the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel - a big day out in the mountains by anyone’s standards. Lets be clear from the start, this is a challenging ascent and should not be undertaken unless you an experienced walker with the right gear and a good weather forecast. 📏 978 metres high 📌 Start from Wasdale Head (probably the easiest route) ⌚ 6 hours if fit and with decent weather 🐶 Dogs allowed if they're also fit and well behaved! 🥾 Wear strong, worn-in boots and take plenty of warm clothing, waterproofs, food and drink, map, compass, torch, whistle and either a survival bag or bivi tent. ⚠️ Around 250,000 people climb Scafell Pike each year - it's popular but this increase in visitors puts the local mountain rescue teams under pressure.
