Wow! What an interesting wine this is. I love everything about it from the artwork on the label to the production methods to the final product in my glass. 50/50 Carignan and Touriga Nacional fermented in stainless steel and racked to old barrels. The Carignan spent 7 months under flor. I can be a bit standoffish about flor as it isn’t an something I have found love for yet but this is so beautifully done. The fruit is glorious and shows as redcurrant, pomegranate and red apple skin. I love the wild herb notes, the spice and the beautiful salinity on the finish. This wine came all the way back from South Africa for me in @lisasplaces suitcase! What a great friend to think of me when tasting this wine and to know I’d love it. Hip Chicks Do Wine - This is Portland’s oldest urban winery + is owned + operated by winemakers + married couple Laurie Lewis + Renee Neely. They offer a wide variety of wines from grapes that are sourced throughout WA + OR. Stopped in to their cozy + intimate tasting room while visiting Portland in February + enjoyed a wonderful flight poured by their incredibly sweet son, Tiernan. The well-rounded flight included skin contact Pinot Gris (pictured), rosé of Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Syrah, sweet rosé, + Syrah port. A few bottles were purchased 😊. This delicious 2021 skin contact Pinot Gris has notes of apple + melon on the nose with tasting notes of apple blossom, rose hip, + orange. Can’t wait to visit again someday! 🍷

Olive oil, bees, honey, snow capped mountains, a true garagiste and lots of new wines to try! 🥰 Wine #120 is a Romeiko, which is a really interesting and versatile red grape. Picked late, it can produce highly alcoholic wines that are traditionally made by spending over four years in untopped barrels giving it a nutty sherry like flavor. However, our local winemaker guide Vasilis explained that picking it earlier (think pink!) can make a nice rose’ with plenty of acid, or even a gentle free run white wine (a still blanc de noir!) 💕 Romeiko is from Crete, where it once made up 80% of the vineyard area. Faces of Red Mountain: Ellie Zeron It’s hard to imagine Ellie not smiling. She is always excited to share what she’s working on, always excited to be in the vineyard or in the winery. Ellie grew up in Venezuela and was a chemical engineer before she fell in love with vineyards and pursued her dream of becoming a winemaker. She chose Red Mountain to plant her own @zeronvineyards because she’d learned about our incredible Cabernet Sauvignon, and she wanted to make her own. She bought property on Red Mountain in 2016. Now the winemaker for her own project and for @elkhavenwinery, Ellie is proudly living out her second dream job! With Elk Haven, Ellie gets to make Red Mountain wines as well as wines grown in Idaho, from a vineyard she helped design there that grows aromatic white grapes. “Follow your dreams, because it’s possible,” Ellie says. And she says it with a huge smile on her face.
