Yoga Challenge Day 3 - Lizard Pose Sanskrit: Godhapitham In terms of Hatha style Yoga, this pose is considered a nice beginner level, almost a gateway pose, for the slightly more technical pose of pigeon. It’s a fantastic pose to begin the practice of spinal flexibility, think mini backbends. With one leg behind you, it encourages a beautiful stretch into the hips and quadriceps. And something we don’t often think about is the building up of wrist strength…this pose is great for that. Set Up: 🪷 You can start on your hands and knees in ‘tabletop’ position. 🪷 When you’re ready and starting on the right hand side, shift your right knee to behind your right wrist. 🪷 Gently exhale as you start to shift your left leg back, sliding your foot away from the body keeping the left leg nice and long. The top of your left foot can be on the mat or if you’d like, curl your toes under to relieve tension in the left leg. 🪷 When you have found your Lizard Pose, inhale deeply and then draw your body forward over the wrists, keeping the torso and spine nice and long. 🪷 Stay here for a few breaths and perhaps with every exhale you can encourage your body to move forward a little further so as to invite the torso to right thigh. 🪷 When you’re ready to come out of the pose, find strength in the hands and wrists, inhale and start to lift the chest, straightening the arms as you go up encouraging a nice open front body. 🪷 When back to the start of Lizard Pose, breathe smooth and steady for a few breaths enjoying the stretch up the front of the torso. 🪷Inhale when ready and lift the hips to help draw your left leg back up and under the body into that tabletop position. 🪷Go ahead and repeat on the left hand side to bring a sense of symmetry to the body Important Notes: - If you are feeling tension in either of the knees that the torso is sitting over, place a thin cushion or folded blanket in between the back of the thigh and calves to relieve pressures felt. eka pada galavasana/(baby) flying pigeon pose . This is a fun pose for me, as it includes two of my favorite things: 1) hip opening 2) arm balancing! I find the key that helps me find my stability is wrapping my foot as much as I can around my upper arm. . I can do the full version of this pose with my left leg extended, but that second side is still eluding me! Hopefully one day soon I'll graduate from being a baby pigeon to a full-grown pigeon 😜

After my workout (see stories for today’s awesome workout with @fitbodybyjulia on her YouTube 🙌🏻) my hips/legs needed a lil more loveeee 👌🏼 So after a great recovery yoga practice I took to my mat to work that pigeon press 👀 Some days my body just doesn’t want to click into this press 🤨 other days it clicks right away and #wehaveliftoff 🤸🏼♀️😂 Today things were clicking so I challenged myself a bit with the press from headstand and the baby flying crow press 😏 . If you are working anything flying pigeon...engage the flying leg hamstrings and entire backside 🙌🏻 You can see in that baby pincha variation I have to bend the knee to really activate things and use that lil kick/momentum to help me lift off...that can feel like you are just going to eat mat 😳😂 butttt keep pushingggg through the fingers/hands/forearms and feel your strength lift you upppp! . Day 3 of #heartofnomad is adventurous with flying pigeon pose. I decided to get really adventurous today and try flying baby pigeon pose. It’s actually a lot harder than I thought. Keeping my upper back & core engaged to lift all the while compressing was a lot to think about. Not to mention, that my nose is an inch from the mat. 😆 It was really fun to try something new though.
