A little #booktivity for your Thursday afternoon! This craft can actually be found in the back of the book Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon, including templates and instructions 🐲 We used foam for the dragon’s body and I highly recommend if you have on hand for a sturdier structure. I then just let B go to town with different accessories, markers and sequins for scales! The book is great about learning the differences between eastern and western dragons, as well as expressing kindness and understanding when others might do things/believe in things differently than we do. And the activity was an A+. B even spent some time after he was done creating, using his dragon in some pretend play with his legos 😎 If you’re looking for a ready made book and activity pairing, go get your hands on this one at your local bookstore or library!

Added a few more books to my Mother's Day collection (see my stories for more!) . These two books are complete opposites, but both intensly lovable. . The first book, 'Loving Hands,' is sweet, sentimental, and has an overall tone of treasuring motherhood. I cried when I read this at the bookstore (didn't help that I was breastfeeding my newborn as I read...kept thinking, don't let this stage end, it's too precious!!!) . The second book, 'Seven Silly Eaters,' tells about an exhausted mother of 7, who has to cook 7 different foods each meal. This hit home on so many levels! In the end, her children attempt to cook for her!! “Mama Built a Nest” by Jennifer Ward and Steve Jenkins is the most darling informational storybook about different types of birds and the varying nests that they make and live in. It’s a great read aloud book, I love that it tells a little story and offers educational facts on each page, and the illustrations are beautiful! J is for Jingle Jangle Jungle! Ohhhkay this letter project was a super fun one! We read one of my personal favorite books, The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland, and our preschoolers really dug how specifically connected this collage project was to the story! We decided to go with something a little less obvious (like B is for Bear or C is for Cranky) and instead we went with the location in which the story takes place- J is for Jungle! We used paper Easter grass for Lion’s golden mane, pipe cleaners for Moose’s marvelous antlers, quilt batting and black paint for Zebra’s fantastic stripes, big yellow poms for Sheep’s soft wool, and brown and tan poms for Bear’s fur. There is an X in miXed. When we highlight the letter Xx in our classroom I rarely use words that start with X and instead play around with words that have the X sound in them. Mix, box, fox, fix, etc. For our letter wall X we chose the book Mixed by @arreechung and IT IS A GOOD ONE. It was new to me and to most of my preschoolers this year and we immediately fell in love with the colorful dot characters in the story (I mean, little baby Green anyone?💚) as we read about celebrating authenticity and love, change and new possibilities. We loved it so much we spent almost two weeks with it, doing various color mixing activities and kindness and cooperation exercises together. The kids used ink daubers to make and mix colors and sharpie markers to turn them into dot people. January was unseasonably warm in Utah and I held off on some of our winter weather PreK activities for a few weeks, waiting for the weather to cooperate. My co-teachers and I worked with each kid one on one with this project. Each preschooler looked through the book and chose an animal, and then we cut out the hearts for our younger preschoolers and drew the heart lines for our older preschoolers to cut them out by themselves, and then they assembled their animals. The intent with this project was imitation art, and to show the kids how one shape can be manipulated into different things! Here’s a look at the booktivity that saved our sanity last week!! People have been asking for ideas to take their books at home and extend them into activities (bonus when they can become independent play! 🙌). Here is how we took a totally unplanned idea last week and got a whole weeks worth of play (and still going). Connor is obsessed with the Usborne phonics books and I love that I can read one in just a few minutes or pile on a few if we have longer. I had some work to get done so after reading Weasels with Measels I figured I could set out the dot paint draw a few trees and buy myself an half an hour or so. Well, my child has been raised on breakfast invitations with @dayswithgrey and decided to take it further. He grabbed his Step-by-step drawing book to add woodland animals, colored ALL afternoon and announced at dinner he wanted to make a different habitat. This led to grabbing more animal books to look at which animals live where and a new habitat drawing each day. We got hours of entertainment out of that one quick book and activity set up! Not every “booktivity” is a success like this and we’ve also worked really hard to get to this level of independent play, which can vary day to day! But I hope this gives you some ideas to grab a book around the house to read this afternoon and see if you can set out a simple art activity to go with it. 🥰 Share your book ideas below so others can try them out! D is for DINOSAUR 🦖🦕 We read How to Catch a Dinosaur by @andyelkerton and Adam Wallace last week and made dinosaur *fossils* in @crayola air-dry clay. This activity is an absolute favorite for my preschoolers every year! Normally we use salt dough but we gave clay a try this time because I knew that we were going to put the fossils on our big letter D and hang it up on our alphabet wall, and though it’s still heavy, dried clay is lighter than salt dough. The clay discs are a little more fragile but the clay holds tinier imprint details than salt dough and it painted really well! It’s #spaceplayday We were generously gifted a STEM rotating planet and projector kit from @smartstoy and it came just in time! We enjoyed putting it together and watching the projections! 'Bring Joy'...read the first letter, and so Theo, a little boy, brings joy to his neighborhood by stringing lights on the trees and hanging ornaments from the bushes. 'Find harmony', reads the second letter. Theo finds himself going door to door caroling to his neighbors. Little Theo continues to receive letter after letter miraculously floating down from inside a tall pine tree with the words PROPERTY OF THE NORTH POLE carved into it's bark. Still Theo wonders if his own letter written to Santa, not one filled with a list of toys, but his one special wish, will be answered. The Circles All Around Us inspired butcher paper activity❤️🌎 I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure this activity would hit but decided to give it a go and see what might come of it. The kids loved it and engagement was awesome, and they were much more skilled with the circle stencils than I expected! I didn’t give them any instructions, I just rolled out the butcher paper on our big table, doodled one of my favorite lines from the book for alphabet letter exposure (and because it’s fun for me) and put out crayons, markers, and circle stencils for them. It was fun to watch them figure out the stencils and how to layer and nest the different sizes. About halfway through class I put out paper strips, heart punches, and glue sticks and they went full on with them, as evidenced in slide 7 😆 ❤️. This activity might present as a process art or fine motor activity, but it was primarily targeted at exploration of early math skills (1:1 correspondence, size ratios and puzzle concepts). BUT that said, when is any activity in an early childhood setting ever *only* facilitating the growth and development of just one skill? ❤️ One of my favorite things is looking at the little details of a butcher paper activity after the kids have gone home. I love seeing the traces of their individuality all over it. I can identify their different writing pressures, favorite colors, conservative and not so conservative glue preferences 😳. If you give a mouse a straw he’ll ask you for some scissors to cut it up with and some tape so he can hang the pieces on the fridge… wait, or did he use the straw to drink milk? And was it his picture that he hung on the fridge? And didn’t he use the scissors to trim his hair? 🤷🏻♀️😆 We got a little silly and played around with some elements of the story this week, and we strengthened our fine motor skills and our scissor skills at the same time! I also made the paper fridges big and tall and gave the kids a step stool to add a gross motor element to the challenge. (And also of course, because a fridge seems pretty big to you if you’re a mouse🐭❤️). Must have #Thanksgivingbook. 🥧 In this story, a little girl shares about a family tradition where they each write things they’re grateful for on the back of paper strips and make a paper chain and then read them all on Thanksgiving day. This book just begs a booktivity making thankful strips and paper chains. There are multiple ways that you can do this in your classroom but if you don’t have Color paper you can print this one I made. It’s roughly 1 inch of warm water in shallow 16x11 in @ikeausa bins and a squirt of white washable non toxic tempera paint (not too much, just enough to tint the water white! 🦃T is for Turkey🦃 Let our hearts be full of both 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌𝒔 and 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈. 🧡🦃🤎 I’ve teamed up with some mamas to share with you some Turkey inspired crafts for your littles! The littles and I love a good book + craft pairing, and this was a super fun and easy one! First, we read “T is for Turkey,” then we made our own T shaped turkeys, using each boy’s handprint for the feathers! All you need is popsicle sticks, googly eyes, construction paper/cardstock, and glue.
