Last week, we covered sister dresses. This #ThrowbackThursday is for the boys and particularly why they are always wearing shorts in old photographs. Following is the #FashionHistory of knee breeches, knickerbockers and shorts for young boys as explained by the BBC. Short trousers became the norm for boys in the 1920s. Boys would wear short trousers until the age of about 13, and the schoolboy figure in socks and short trousers remained in fashion until the 1960s. Family pictures of boys before the 1920s in knee breeches can be partly explained by the fact that photographs would often be of people in their 'Sunday best', so the pictures of the boys in their best clothes would be nearer to what we would call fancy dress. The Victorians liked to clothe their children for photographs in Fauntleroy suits or sailor suits. However, before shorts, ordinary lads wore knickerbockers which were an American introduction that arrived in the 1860s and 1870s. In America, boys wore trousers, sometimes of corduroy, to just below the knee with long socks. They often had buckles below the knee. American boys continued to wear knickerbockers between the wars. Britain, however, moved towards shorts, possibly associated with the growth in the organization of schools, for the ease of going to the loo. Shorts were also influenced by the Boy Scout movement, which started in Britain in the early years of the 20th century. Shorts led the fashion for boys in Britain for 50 years. (We would argue that the tradition still holds strong for the royals as both Prince George and Louis have been wearing them practically since birth)

🇬🇧🇬🇧 We attended the Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens (PRCBC)’s 10th anniversary at @amnestyuk today! PRCBC beneficiaries shared their journeys to obtaining British citizenship and many still being stuck in a system locking them out of a status they know to be true to them. Great work from PRCBC getting young British children to obtain their rightful citizenship. We loved hearing the stories and have some pamphlets about rights to citizenship to deliver as well now. We’ll take them in our voter registration drives and events. To us, our democratic work does not stop at the ballot box. Not the best photo, but it was taken in the moment because life is about living in the moment. I took this yesterday when I was playing hide-and-seek with my kids after dinner. The kitchen still needed clearing, I just missed a call from a client, had messages to respond to and work to do, but kids wanted to play after dinner, so we played. Then they decided that they wanted to hide from their dad as they knew he was nearly home - so we got under the blanket and hid because in their world, hiding under a blanket means that we are invisible. So @stan.khatri got home and played along they had the best time even though they couldn't stop giggling under that blanket. The best part is that this is a memory. Pictures don't have to be perfect and activities don't have to always be planned. Spontaneous playtimes can be loads of fun. Living in the moment allows more space for gratitude and fun. After all, isn't being happy one of the purposes of life? I tend to sign my newsletters with "Health and Happiness" because these are two areas of life that are most important to me. And I can achieve both by living in the moment. Read an article this morning listing all the MP’s that voted against free school meals for the hungry kids during the holidays and after thinking about it in depth, it made me furious. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Nothing changes! You could say it “creates dependency” to offer free food out of school term, but as the country and the world is facing a debilitating global pandemic and child poverty is worse than ever, I don’t really think that’s relevant. You have to ask yourself, could you sleep at night knowing families hit hardest by the pandemic are struggling to feed their children, and vote against free dinners during the holidays?
