The serrated peaks of Valhalla Mountain, in Northern British Columbia's Coast Ranges, near the Alaska border. The local I was with and I caught a lift on a mining prospector's helicopter to these nearby ridges above the #Stikine River, where the mountain came into full view. The bushwhack back down the mountain to the river where we were picked up is still a source of nightmarish memories. Traveling I-5 southbound through the San Joaquin Valley is both beautiful and dull. When I can, I try to get through parts of it well before sunrise. Unfortunately, in the winter, tule fog is a beautiful if dangerous presence. Once sunrise passes and the fog starts burning off, though, it lends itself to ethereal, bewitching views when looking westward across the foothills of the Diablo Range and the Southern Inner Coast Ranges, including the Panoche Hills. Some incredible landscapes from this spring and summer in the west! 🪨 The inner beds of the #Stratification are composed of bulky layers of #Sandstone and recessed layers of #Shale . Why does the Sandstone stand out more? The simple answer is permeability and porosity. 🟤Sandstone - It is common to see more prominent layers of bulky sandstone due to its hardness, which makes the rock more resistant to erosion and weathering processes. Sand grains have empty spaces between them where liquid water can permeate (move around). Hard water dissolves into a mineral material. As water moves through the sand, crystals grow eventually, fusing everything together. 🟤 Shale is a much softer and more brittle fine-grained rock, making it more prone to erosion. Clay sized sediments will still pack together. However, due to the porosity of dense clay sediments, there is a low permeability, and the water can not work well through tightly packed sediments. Over time, the clay materials become buried by other sediments becoming compacted and cemented into shale. When exposed to the surface by erosion, #shale easily weathers into thin layers. ◾️ As we take a closer look at the layers (last image), we can see distinguished ripple marks in parallel ridges that show proof of ocean currents. Looking south from Pole Mountain in Sonoma County. The peak of Pole Mountain is the highest point along the Sonoma Coast reaching an elevation of 2,204 ft. From the top you can see some overlapping plant communities that range from oak woodlands to mixed evergreen forests to redwood forests to coastal scrub. The Coast Ranges contain many different soil types because they are part of an uplifted and folded accretionary wedge that formed when the Pacific plate subducted beneath the North American plate.
