Nestled in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Corgarff Castle is a striking testament to Scottish history. Built around 1530 by the Elphinstone family and later leased to the Forbes of Towie, the castle witnessed dramatic events, including a tragic fire in 1571 at the hands of Adam Gordon of Auchindoun. In 1607, Alexander Forbes of Towie and his band, including the famed piper George McRobie, seized the castle in a daring raid, fortifying it with a colourful array of "Highland thieves and limmers." The castle changed hands – Earls, Marquises, and Jacobite hearts. Burned, rebuilt, and reborn. In 1748, the British government claimed it, transforming it into a barracks. Soldiers marched its halls, guarding the military road from Braemar Castle to Fort George until 1831, later serving to suppress illegal whisky distillation. Today, under Historic Environment Scotland's care, Corgarff Castle stands as a symbol of Scotland's cultural heritage, welcoming visitors to explore its historic halls and battlements. It is situated on the #snowroads between Cock Bridge and Tomintoul. It reads ‘Take a moment to behold as still skies or storms unfold, warm your soul before you go, in sun, rain, sleet or snow’. It sits beside a later addition, John Kennedy’s The Watchers. The four cowls are made of steel also acting as seats, ideal for taking ‘a moment to behold’ out of the ravages of the prevailing wind. While there we explored a familiar route to Carn Leac Saighdeir Trig point - sometimes known as the lairds bed or the cairn of the soldier’s grave. A beautiful route in all weather, we had magnificent sun beams, mosses, birds, the river Don, the lovely Strathdon Valley and the old military bridges to keep us entertained for the duration of the trail run. 🏡Home sweet Home🏡Wir sind wieder gut zu Hause angekommen und Straddi steht warm verpackt vor der Haustür. Aaaaber…als wir die Haustür aufschlossen schlug uns ein unangenehmer gammeliger Geruch entgegen. Und das Licht ging nicht an. Vielleicht erraten die ersten unter euch was passiert sein könnte!? Richtig: während unserer Abwesenheit gab es wohl einen Stromausfall. Der Hauptschalter ist rausgeflogen. Das heißt ALLES ist ausgefallen: Tiefkühltruhe abgetaut, alles schwamm in vergammelter Brühe🤢. Der Kühlschrank war aus, aber da war nicht viel drin, war halb so wild. Das schlimmste aber ist, dass die Heizung nicht lief. Im Wohnzimmer waren 6°C🥶. So langsam steigen die Temperaturen im Haus wieder und das schlimmste Chaos ist behoben. Ach so, das „Haus“ auf den Bildern ist natürlich nicht unser Haus🤪Leider🥰Das ist das Corgarff Castle und liegt weit oben in den Cairngorm Mountains. Corgarff castle in Aberdeenshire was built around 1530 by the Elphinstone family and leased to the Forbes of Towie. Over the next 3 centuries it would have chaotic life. Being fought over, change hands several times, burnt down and fortified. In 1571 it was burned by Clan Forbes enemy, Adam Gordon of Auchindoun. In May 1607 the castle was captured from Alexander, 4th Lord Elphinstone by Alexander Forbes of Towie. In 1626 it was acquired by the Earl of Mar. In 1645 it was used as an assembly point by the troops of the Marquis of Montrose. It was burned again in both 1689 and 1716 by Jacobite supporters . It was resettled by the Forbes family in 1745 but had to be forfeited due to their Jacobite leanings. In 1748 it was bought by the British government and rebuilt and extended as a barracks, this is when the star shaped wall was added. A detachment of government troops were stationed there, on the military road from Braemar Castle to Fort George, Inverness. Planning a trip to the Cairngorms this winter? Why not add this to your list! The castle was built in the mid 16th century by the Forbes of Towie. In 1571 it was burned by their enemy, Adam Gordon of Auchindoun, resulting in the deaths of Lady Forbes, her children, and numerous others, and giving rise to the ballad Edom o Gordon. After the Jacobite risings of the 18th century, it was rebuilt as a barracks and a detachment of government troops were stationed there, on the military road from Braemar Castle to Fort George, Inverness. For 95 years, the Redcoats in the old tower patrolled Strathdon, hunting down Jacobite sympathisers. Latterly they helped the excisemen to stamp out the illegal production and smuggling of whisky. Military use continued as late as 1831, after which the tower served as a distillery and housed local workers. It remained part of the Delnadamph estate belonging to the Stockdale family until they passed the castle into state care in 1961 and gave the ownership of the castle to the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society.

Castles are grey and old-looking, right? Not in the wild hills of the eastern Cairngorms they aren't. Corgarff Castle may be off the beaten track, but it stands out like a white pebble in a sea of green. ⚪ Don't let its neatly painted exterior fool you. The castle dates to around the year 1550 and is in tremendous condition considering it has, on several occasions in its history, been used to store explosives and suffered from fire damage (although thankfully not at the same time). 🧨 Corgarff was a garrison post, and the landscape gives an idea of the sense of isolation and remoteness the troops stationed there must have experienced.
