🦕 ONE DAY ON OUR PREHISTORIC PLANET WITH A DIPLODOCUS 🦕 We just can’t get enough of Ella Bailey’s One Day On Our Blue Planet Series. The ‘In The Ocean’ book which we added to our Recommended Reads titles a few years ago is one of our most well thumbed picture books and, partly due to its beautiful presentation, partly due to the fact that our Book Clubbers are crazy about dinosaurs, this new book about the natural history of the world is going to follow suit and be a sure fire hit. A young Diplodocus (our favourite dinosaur might we just add) dinosaur is venturing out into the prehistoric world to explore her surroundings. She has had to stay hidden since she hatched but now she is big enough to safely head out into her natural habitat. With its soft, gender-neutral colour palette, this gorgeous non-fiction account is ideal for any child age 3-7. Fast becoming our favourite genre of picture book, this informative type of non-fiction, wrapped up in a fabulously readable fictional story, entices all children to learn without even realising. We learnt that dinosaurs lay eggs because Dippy hatches from one, information about the early life of a juvenile diplodocus, that their collective name is a herd, their size in relation to other dinos, facts about their diet, predators and defence mechanisms as we read. When we finished, we discussed the other types of dinosaurs and tried to find out the same information for those. We had so much fun together. I think I might show you our shelves and book piles more regularly and ask you which you’d like me to speed up my reviews of - it was so helpful in deciding what to share with you this week… 🦕I can see why you wanted a closer look at The Fossil Hunter - it is STUNNING, but also highly informative; an utterly captivating narrative non-fiction debut from Kate Winter. I bought it in @jaffe_and_neale in January and so did the friend I was with. 🐚Combining Mary’s story with diary entries, timelines and labelled artefacts and curiosities, we are completely emerged in Mary Anning’s world, working along side her as she excavates her discoveries along the windswept Dorset coast, sitting with her by candlelight as she carefully records her finds, and standing in the shadows of important institutions as both her fossils and her knowledge are appropriated by others for their own gain. 🪨Woven into Mary’s remarkable story - a lifetime with many periods of poverty, largely dependent on the whims of rich white men - is a wider social commentary about the treatment of women and the poor, as well as that of enslaved people in the Caribbean. It brilliantly highlights the interconnectedness of all marginalised and oppressed groups, and the unfairness and inequality that comes with wealth and privilege. 🦕Kate’s artwork is incredible. Watercolour landscapes, sunsets and cross sections pair with detailed examples of Mary’s finds and also highlight the inequalities mentioned above. Questions asked of the reader draw them further in, and the endmatter offers even more insight. 🐚At 80 pages, with three fold out sections, The Fossil Hunter is so compelling and packs in a huge amount of information about this remarkable woman, whose name I was unfamiliar with until having children! Personally I’ve been enamoured with anything to do with prehistoric animals and archeology my whole life. I almost studied archeology instead of art! We were therefore delighted to receive a copy of, ‘One Day on our Prehistoric Planet’ by the incredibly talented @ellastration 🦕 Together myself and my daughter H devoured this gorgeous book, following the story of a curious baby diplodocus, as it takes its first steps into the world. Ella Bailey’s devine illustrations were the inspiration behind our painted pebbles. After reading this adorable story, H asked me to create story stones for her. I hand painted 9 dinosaurs using an acrylic paint base and POSCA paint pens. Each dino was an absolute joy to create! It’s been so long since I tried my hand at painting pebbles! A really sweet activity that children could create too! They’re the perfect accompaniment to bring any dinosaur story to life through bookish play! ✨ I’ll be making our pebbles weather proof with gloss varnish so we can hide them on days out and upcoming adventures. This animal is estranged from the other therizinosaurus that occupy Vulture Valley, the Vietnamese setting of Primitive War. Instead of burrowing like the other therizinosaurus of Vulture Valley, Lạc Long Quân lives alone in a cave, which has resulted in the animal losing most of its plumage. Species: Pelororex ("Monstrous King") Clade: Tyrannosauroidea Diet: Carnivore Size: 25-30 Feet Habitat: Forested Areas Threat Level: 4/5 (Lethal) Group Orientation: Solitary Fun Facts: Pelororex is the Tiger of the Trithanas forests as it had a large number of plant eaters to feed on, especially ceratopsians and hadrosaurs which it specialized in preying on. Its senses are not as sharp as its tyrannosaurs relatives, but it had a slender skull and bones, making it a slim yet graceful predator. Although not suitable for slicing flesh, its teeth could crunch though bone and rip flesh from a carcass. Pelororex is the only species of tyrannosaur to possess such an exaggerated head crest, something that is more commonly found in other therapod clades. The crests are mostly for display, and can be colored brightly and differently from the rest of the body, with coloration becoming more vivid during the breeding season, particularly in the males. Pelororex usually preferred to hunt prey similar to its size, and will even tolerate others of their kind to pursue herds of small sauropods or ceratopsians to increase their chances of making a successful kill. A szkoda! Mogłam się nią zachwycać już lata temu 🫣 Warto jednak było czekać na to fantastyczne wydanie od @wydawnictwo_vesper 😍 Obydwa tomy cudownie prezentują się na półce ❤️ Na razie tylko część pierwsza za mną, ale druga juz czeka na swoją kolej. Czy muszę Wam mówić, o czym jest ta książka? Czy są tu osoby, które historii stworzonej przez Michaela Crichtona jeszcze nie znają? Na kostarykańskiej wyspie powstaje w wielkiej tajemnicy olbrzymi park rozrywki. Świat nigdy dotąd czegoś takiego nie widział. Multimilioner i wizjoner John Hammond postanowił stworzyć dzieło, które zmieni wszystko. Ale zanim nastąpi wielkie otwarcie, zaprosił wybitnych archeologów i ekscentrycznego matematyka na wyspę, by mogli oni ocenić postęp prac i dać zielone światło do dalszej budowy. Absolutnie nikt nie spodziewał się, że główną atrakcją będą najprawdziwsze, żywe… dinozaury! Mimo początkowego zachwytu grupa naukowców poddaje w wątpliwość jakiekolwiek zalety istnienia takiego parku. Jak się okazuje, całkiem słusznie… Bawiłam się na tej książce świetnie! DINO SHELFIE 🦖 As we’ve been enjoying so many dinosaur themed plays lately, I decided that I wanted to set Moo up with a small Dino book rotation to complement our play. It's an exciting time in the tcg for both collecting and playing. Paradox Pokémon have some incredible illustrations, and the Ancient & Future cards are making gameplay very interesting. The meta is in a reasonably good state; many different deck styles can do well competitively. Although the Charizard ex deck is a little overpowered 🙄. I thought it would be fun to feature some Ancient & Future cards, like this Roaring Moon which is the backbone of my Ancient Box deck. 📖 REVIEW 📖 The dinosaur and me by Dale Neal Illustrated by Mark Millicent My honest thoughts.. This is such a great little story about a little boy who was not fitting in, without friends, no-one to play with. Then comes a Dinosaur that has been frozen for a long time and they have fun and have adventures together. I love reading this to my son (who's only two) and it kept him engaged all the way to the end, he enjoyed turning the pages as well as touching the Dinosaur on each page. Dale Neal has written a lovely story and given his shy timid character so much love through friendship and in turn grows confident and happier. I also like how the boy has no name, I feel that children will imagine that that boy is them and realise that having a friend of any kind will make them happier if they are lomely.. give all hope! So, I have a little wooden-type thing in my room that says "keep calm and drink tea." He's always had a thing for dinosaurs . I have a "keep calm" poster maker app on my phone. And I have a printer. So I made a cute poster, printed it, and glued it to a round piece of cardboard and used green construction paper for a border. He says he has Jurassic Park dinosaur stickers. He says, “It’s like Jurassic Park and Wings of Fire got together and wrote a book.” He was thrilled when the next two showed up on our doorstep from the publisher. He grabbed his current candy obsession and proceeded to read the next two in one day. If you have a fantasy-adventure reader, this story of five outcasts and two warring dinosaur kingdoms with suck them right in! They are tough to put down. Slither Wing is definitely my favourite Ancient Paradox Pokémon! What's yours? If you look carefully at Slither Wing's segmented tail you'll see it has a raised section through the middle. (Highlighted in my crappy diagram 😂) This is seen in fossil trilobites, and is noticeable in some beetle larvae for example. They could've just whacked a generic dino-looking tail on the end of Volcarona, but instead they gave it an ancestral arthropod feature which is super cool. 🐛 . I'm really enjoying the Ancient Box deck at the moment.
