#whitequeen #rebeccaferguson #royalfamily #elizabethwoodville #kingedwardiv #mgm #primevideo #tvshow #recensione

#ElizabethOfYork was the real #WhitePrincess and her life was just as dramatic as what you’ve seen on TV. Born in 1466 she was the daughter of #EdwardIV and #ElizabethWoodville, the sister of the #PrincesInTheTower and the niece of #RichardIII. Her life was shaped by the #WarsOfTheRoses, the conflict fought between two branches of the Plantagenet family (the #Yorks and the #Lancasters) over who would hold the English throne. As a result of it she would see her father exiled, she and her mother and siblings would have to flee into sanctuary in #WestminsterAbbey not once but twice, she would be declared illegitimate, her little brothers ( #EdwardV and #RichardOfShrewsbury, Duke of York) would disappear at the hands of their uncle, #RichardDukeOfGloucester, and she would find herself married to the enemy; #HenryTudor, the man who defeated Richard at the #BattleOfBosworth and knocked the male members of the York family off the throne for good. All this took place before her 20th birthday and had times been different, she would have become Queen Regnant as Elizabeth I, rather than just the wife of #HenryVII. To learn all about Elizabeth’s youth and how she went from being #TheWhitePrincess to the first #TudorQueen, see my latest YouTube video, available by clicking the link in my bio and selecting my channel, or by copying and pasting https://youtu.be/VMswZDKmxhE into your browser. #HistoryCalling #RoyalHistory #RoyalWomen #Education #History

Elizabeth Woodville was born in 1437 in Northamptonshire being the eldest child of Richard Woodville, Earl Rivers and his wife Jacquetta of Luxembourg. This marriage was an unusual one as Jacquetta far outranked Richard and the couple had married secretly (it is an interesting foreshadow of their daughter’s second marriage). The family was wealthy and of middling rank and Elizabeth was soon joined by at least eleven siblings. Elizabeth is thought to have been formally taught how to read and write in English, Latin, and French. She had also been introduced to law and maths. The Woodville family was quite wealthy but, like many families, became less so as the Wars of the Roses went on. In approximately 1452, when she was around 15, Elizabeth married Sir John Grey of Groby. He was about five years older than his wife and, although it was unlikely to have been a love match, it is certainly possible that the two had met prior to their marriage. The couple had two sons Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset (great-grandfather to Lady Jane Grey) and Richard Grey. Unfortunately, Elizabeth was widowed and her young sons left fatherless in 1461 when Sir John was killed at the Second Battle of St Albans. He famously fought on the side of the Lancastrians. Even more famously Elizabeth’s second husband was the Yorkist King Edward IV. The political affiliations of her first husband was one of many reasons why her marriage to the King proved unpopular. Elizabeth is said to have first met the King after she took her sons to wait by the road near where he was hunting. She wanted to ask him for money as she was a poor widow. It is unlikely she imagined that Edward would make her his wife. Elizabeth Woodville did lead a fascinating life she unexpectedly became queen but fled to sanctuary twice. ‘Twas an interesting life but not one I wish to have. She took matters into her own hands when necessary but so much of her life was out of her control.

Why royals didn’t breastfeed their children in medieval times? 👑Royal mothers didn’t usually breastfeed their children Breastfeeding was generally viewed with distaste, but on a practical level, it acted as a form of contraception ; for a queen, whose job it was to provide more heirs, breastfeeding simply wasn’t a practical option if she wished to conceive again quickly. 👑Unlike the royals , poor families could not afford the services of a wet nurse and breastfed their infants themselves. 👑Royal women were not expected to breastfeed their own babies, as this was not in accordance with their high status. In this, the matriarchal Queen in her role of fertile mother – a powerful tool of imagery in royal propaganda portraits, ensuring the longevity of the dynasty – does not extend to the performance of its attendant physical functions, nor was it expected to. A Queen’s body was used for reasons of state in the process of childbirth, whilst the natural process of motherhood – feeding – was given over to others beneath her own exalted status. In practice, this made the Queen a figure of state, superior to her own natural bodily processes. All this would have been understood as an established ritual and have been viewed as entirely normal. Historically at least, the body of a queen was governed by ceremony, both in life and later, in death. #history #motherandbaby #babies #breastfeed #anneboleyn #elizabethofyork #elizabethwoodville #lucreziaborgia #borgias #royal #birth #pregnancy #catherineofaragon #elizabethi #marytudor

Anthony Woodville: Sophisticate or Schemer? by Danielle Burton. "Who was the real Anthony Woodville? He has very often been stigmatised as a man of ruthless ambition, a trait which has often been attributed to the Woodville family as a whole." Ever linked to the Wars of the Roses, the tragic tale of Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl Rivers has been unjustly overlooked for centuries. As the favourite brother of Elizabeth Woodville and thus brother-in-law to King Edward IV, the connection to the Woodville family has left this man with possibly an unfair reputation as an upstart, driven by pure ambition and greed. Danielle Burton, however, is here to set the record straight. Despite his deeply connected blood ties to the throne, perhaps Anthony was not all he was reported to be. Burton argues the case for a quiet man, keen to avoid the political intrigues of courtly drama while following the ideals of traditional chivalry with poetry, skillful jousting and devotion to religion. He was a patron, most notably to William Caxton, the man who brought the printing press to England, and assisted in the translation of several texts. This debut biography of Burton is a triumph. While source material is limited in what can be learned on Anthony, the author does an exemplary job of deciphering it and constructing a believable profile of this enigmatic man, challenging the many negatives in order to present a more sympathetic figure. Burton is passionate and completely engaging in her narrative, that it is completely impossible not to be pulled into her text. I devoured it within a short period of time. The author is easily setting the standard for future historical biographies to come. Thank you to @philipjdean1989 of @amberleypublishing for sending me a copy of this fascinating book. #ad #pr #prproduct

Attempting to practice my "wistfully gazing from the castle window" look on the landing, isn't quite the same 🙃 Spent the afternoon refitting the kirtle and gown from my Elizabeth Woodville inspired costume, ready for an exciting event we've got coming up in a couple of weeks. Some minor repairs and taking in quite a few inches off the waist (which I am particularly pleased about 😁) - special shout out to my very patient other half for lacing me in and out of this thing more than a few times! There are about ten metres of thick black velvet and silk brocade in this dress so unfortunately I rarely get a chance to wear it - not really compatible with doing events in the summer! #medieval #medievaldress #medievalreenactment #medievalstyle #medievalcostume #medievalclothing #15thcentury #15thcenturyreenactment #15thcenturyfashion #15thcenturydress #15thcenturyclothing #15thcenturystyle #historicalcostume #historicalclothing #reenactment #elizabethwoodville

The White Queen . The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, Book 2 of 15 . Philippa Gregory . Philippa Gregory brings to life the extraordinary story of Elizabeth Woodville, a woman who rises from obscurity to become Queen of England, and changes the course of history forever. . Elizabeth Woodville is a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition. Her mother is Jacquetta, also known as the mystical lady of the rivers, and she is even more determined to bring power and wealth to the family line. While riding in the woods one day, Elizabeth captures the attentions of the newly crowned King Edward IV and, despite her common upbringing, marries him in secret. . When she is raised up to be his queen, the English court is outraged, but Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for her family’s dominance. Yet despite her best efforts, and even with the help of her mother’s powers, her two sons become pawns in a famous unsolved mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the lost princes in the Tower of London. . In this dazzling account of the deadly Wars of the Roses, brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize: the throne of England. . #darklipstickformysoul #libbyapp #audiobook #recordedbooks #elizabethwoodville #philippagreggory .

One of my favourite facts about Sir Richard Wydeville and his daughter Elizabeth... To celebrate Edward IV's fifth coronation anniversary and Elizabeth's second coronation anniversary, Sir Richard Wydeville bought a book: a romance! He bought a copy of "The Romance of Alexander" in 1466. The following inscription made by Sir Richard is taken from "Elizabeth: England's Slandered Queen" and translated by the author, Arlene Okerlund. "Cest liure est a monseigno’ richart de Wideuielle seigneur de riuieres vng dez compaignons de la tres-noble ordre de la jartiere & le dist seigneur acetast le dist liure lan de grace mille cccclxvj le premier jor de lan a landres & le V o an de la coronacion de tres-victorieux roy eduard quart de che non & le second de la coronacion de tres-vertueuze royne Elyzabeth lendemain du jo’ de sainct more." "This book belongs to Lord Richard de Wydeville, Lord Rivers, one of the companions of the very noble order of the Garter, and this Lord bought this book in the year of grace 1466, the first day of the year, in London, and the fifth year of the coronation of the very victorious King Edward, the fourth of this name, and the second of the coronation of the very virtuous Queen Elizabeth, the day after Saint Maure’s day." Source, as quoted by A. Okerlund, Bodleian MS 264, quoted from The Romance of Alexander, ed. M.R. James, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1933), 5. I like the way Susan Higginbotham put it in "The Woodvilles": "It is clear, though, that he [Richard] was 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓. Later he purchased a romance, Alexander, which, he wrote in its inscription, had been bought on the fifth anniversary ofthe coronation of Edward IV ‘et le second de la coronacion de la tres vertueuze royne Elizabeth’." #elizabethwoodville #elizabethwoodvilleedit #thewhitequeen #thewhitequeenedit #richardwoodville #woodville #thewoodvilles #histoire #history #medievalhistory #medievallady #medievalqueen #englishhistory #medievalengland #englishqueen #womeninhistory #rebeccaferguson #rebeccafergusonedit #edwardiv #warsoftheroses #wotr #waroftheroses #houseofyork #jacquettaofluxembourg

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — This is WAR. I finally got to see the behind-the-scenes of before Edward IV met Elizabeth Woodville on that fateful day in The White Queen. The magic throughout the first several books are explained, and we even dip into a bit of the witch trials. Yes, I am a bit backwards, I didn’t know about this book until I was already almost halfway through the Tudor and Plantagenet series. By then, I figured it would be a sweet ending to read the prequel last. And I don’t regret it one bit. It was so nice to see (read?) Jacquetta again and see how she fell in love with Richard Woodville. This book had me researching like crazy. I HAD to know about this rumor that Margaret of Anjou’s son wasn’t Henry VI’s, about his mental illness, about ALL of Jacquetta’s children, about Duchess Ciciley.. It just makes me all the more sad to say goodbye to this series. I just want to read it all over again. Perhaps I’ll have to settle with watching the TV series instead. #jacquettaofluxembourg #richardwoodville #elizabethwoodville #elizabethofyork #margaretofanjou #henryvi #edwardiv #margaretbeaufort #edwardtudor #whiteprincess #whitequeen #tudorandplantagenet #booktotv #basedonthebook #historicalfiction #historicalfantasy #1400shistory #tudorhistory #plantagenethistory #book #books #booksbooksbooks #audible #audiobooks #kindle #kindlebooks

#onthisdayinhistory 9th April, 1483, the ill-fated Edward V succeeds his father Edward IV as King. Edward V was only twelve when his father died, making his reign a minority. Minority reigns had not gone smoothly in the past, usually leaving room for overreaching nobles to take control. This reign was no different. The fact it was set in the Wars of the Roses only made a minority more dangerous. Edward IV had named his brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, his son’s regent. Within months Richard’s main rival for the regency, Earl Rivers, was dead and Edward and his little brother were shut up in the Tower of London. Edward’s mother, Elizabeth Woodville, and his sisters were in sanctuary hiding from Richard. Edward would soon be declared illegitimate and he and his brother would gradually disappear, with his uncle Richard crowning himself Richard III. There have been many theories as to what happened to the ‘Princes in the Tower’, but until concrete evidence is found we cannot know the truth. Image 1: Edward V, by an unknown artist. C.1597-1618. Jacquetta of Luxembourg and Elizabeth Woodville are two of the most intriguing and enigmatic women of the 15th century. They were brave, clever, and charismatic. They had ambition and interest in politics; something that men disliked in women back then. Both of them married for love. They were mother and daughter, and Jacquetta supported Elizabeth all the time, no matter what. Author Philippa Gregory has brought their lives to paper. 'Lady of the Rivers' tells the story of a young Jacquetta of Luxembourg that marries an English duke and later re-marries for love in secret. It draws a lively picture of a naive girl who grows into a wise and courageous woman with power. 'The White Queen' deals with Jacquetta's daughter, Elizabeth Woodville, and her rise to Queen of England during the tumultuous years of the Wars of the Roses. Both novels are written in first person point of view. I liked them. They were easy to read, and if you like historical fiction with a bit of magic, then these books are for you! If you're interested in medieval women, then these are perfect for you, too. However, I personally didn't like the writing style that much. The books are entertaining but not exciting – which, for me, is important when reading historical fiction. Especially ones that deal with battles, wars, and conflicts. Gregory's novels are beloved, but unfortunately, they weren't able to catch me that much. All in all, I'd recommend the novels to you if you're looking for a lighter read. – 🌟🌟🌟 – #historicalfiction #gregory #historybook #ladyoftherivers #thewhitequeen #elizabethwoodville #jacquettaofluxembourg #warsoftheroses #15thcentury #bookreview #bookrecommendation #medievalbook #historischerroman📚 #bücherrezension #historischebücher #queenofengland

#onthisday - 4th April - in 1497, Elizabeth Tilney, Countess of Surrey, died. Elizabeth was the grandmother to two of England’s Queen Consorts - Queens Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard - and the great-grandmother of one of the most famous Monarchs in history - Queen Elizabeth I of England. Elizabeth lived during the turbulent period known as the ‘Wars of the Roses’ and both her first and second husbands supported the Yorkists. Her first husband was killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471. During this time the Yorkist King Edward IV was briefly deposed and Elizabeth accompanied his Queen, Elizabeth Woodville to sanctuary in Westminster Abbey with her daughters (one of which was Elizabeth of York, mother of King Henry VIII who would marry two of Elizabeth’s granddaughters). Elizabeth’s second husband was Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. Elizabeth and Thomas had at least eleven children. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth married the up and coming courtier Thomas Boleyn. Their youngest daughter Anne Boleyn would rise higher than anyone in the family could have ever dreamed when she was crowned and anointed Queen of England at Westminster Abbey on 1st June 1533 after marrying King Henry VIII. Through their son Edmund, Elizabeth and Thomas Howard’s are the grandparents of Queen Catherine Howard who also married Henry VIII. Elizabeth died before either of her famous granddaughters were born, so she did not witness their incredible rise and bloody downfalls. She could never have foreseen that one of her great-grandchildren would sit on the throne of England as a ruling Monarch in their own right as one of the most famous Monarchs in history - Queen Elizabeth I. At the time of her death the Howard’s were still working their way back into favour. Her father-in-law John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 fighting for King Richard III against Henry VII. Her husband was briefly imprisoned in the Tower. Elizabeth served Queen Elizabeth of York, no doubt helping to restore the family to favour. Through her granddaughter Mary Boleyn (older sister of Queen Anne Boleyn) she is an ancestress of the British Royal Family. Swipe 👉 for line.

~ Margaret Beaufort (1443-1509) ~ The Tudor matriarch instrumental in orchestrating the rise to power of the Tudor dynasty, mother of King Henry V11. It is not only her devoutness and never failing piety that inspires me, but also her steadfast devotion to her son. That never ending, parental love has always appealed to me personally, inspired me almost, to not only dream of the affection to which I would treat my future children with, but also to perhaps lament that love that I have been deprived of since I was a little girl. Margaret Beaufort symbolises all that I wish that I could be, staring down into the abyss into which you unfairly and cruelly find yourself in, and yet still being able to drag and to pull yourself out, not just for yourself, but for your love of the higher power, for your family, your ancestors and your dependents. Margaret Beaufort spits in the eye of the ‘can not’, and pervasively treads along the treacherous path of her life, her feet bleeding as she walks, not quite a martyr, but close enough. In some ways, it is reminiscent of Christ pulling the cross up Golgotha. With that same selflessness that led Christ to sacrifice himself for humanity, Margaret consistently sacrifices the easy life that she could have had, consistently putting her life on the line (the punishment for treason for women in medieval times was burning), for a son (she believed was divinely ordained) not even 13 years her junior. “Souvent me souviens” (“I remember often”) ~ #margaretbeaufort #beaufort #tudor #henryvii #henrytudor #edmundtudor #jaspertudor #henrystafford #thomasstanley #history #medieval #warsoftheroses #cousinswar #middleages #richardiii #battleofbosworth #battleofbosworthfield #elizabethwoodville #elizabethofyork #york #lancaster #plantagenet #religion #catholicfaith #tudordynasty #tudorhistory #kinghenryvii #kinghenryviii

Born into a relatively small and unconnected genteel family around 1437, Elizabeth Woodville grew to be a great beauty of her time who was widowed by the age of 24. In the spring of 1464, newly crowned King Edward IV crossed paths with Woodville and instantly sought to bed her. She insisted that the only way he could engage in relations with her was as her husband. Attempts to bribe Woodville's father for her virtue were unsuccessful – Edward ostensibly even threatened Woodville with a knife in his desperate quest. She told him she was "determined to die rather than live unchastely with the king." To satisfy his desire, Edward married her secretly on May 1, 1464. When news of the king's #marriage to an undistinguished, beautiful widow spread, the court was #scandalized – she wasn't the #royal bride they believed their king, deep in the Wars of the Roses, should have married. Despite their marriage being affectionate and incredibly productive – Woodville bore ten children – Edward frequently engaged in affairs. Edward's passing in 1483 proved a difficult blow, forcing #Woodville to draw an alliance with the Tudor family to ensure the safety of her family. #elizabethwoodville #royalmarriage #royalscandals #womeninworldhistory #fyp #fyp#historybuff #historytime #repost

Today I was very fortunate to visit Cheyneygates, although it is usually closed to the public. These two rooms once (or twice!) sheltered Elizabeth Woodville, wife and queen of Edward IV, during her time in Sanctuary, giving birth to the future Edward V there in 1470. Whatever The White Queen told you, Elizabeth was certainly not in a dungeon… These rooms also regularly hosted Henry VII upon his visits to the Abbot of Westminster. And it is there, as well, that Sir Thomas More was held prior to his fateful move to the Tower. Two rooms, tucked away, very little known, and yet full of history. They were sadly badly bombed during WWII, and all that remains from Elizabeth’s time is a chunk of wall (slide 2). It is still, however, pretty incredible to stand where she stood during these stressful and uncertain months! Huge thanks to Scott Craddock for agreeing to my request, and to Gerlinde for the private little tour and all her kindness. Special mention, as well, for the wonderful work of Alexander Creswell, hung all around the first room (slide 3). His watercolours are simply breathtaking! 👀 stay tuned, as the Abbey may organise a tour or two later this Spring…! #westminsterabbey #cheyneygates #cloisters #history #historygirls #elizabethwoodville #thewhitequeen #edwardiv #edwardv #plantagenets #dynasty #monarchy #englishmonarchy #englishhistory #kingsandqueens #richardiii #henryvii #thewarsoftheroses #sirthomasmore #thetudors #herstory #womenshistory #womenofhistory #didyouknow #didyouknowthat #historicallondon #visitlondon @westminsterabbeylondon

Did you know Elizabeth Woodville was related to the man who received Joan of Arc as prisoner and sold her to England, which ultimately led to her death, burning at stake? The man is John II of Luxembourg, Count of Ligny (1392 – 5 January 1441). He was the younger brother of Elizabeth’s grandfather on her mother’s side, Peter of Luxembourg. During the Hundred Years’ War, John took England’s side. The Siege of Compiègne took place in 1430. During the Siege, the Kingdom of France was battling Burgundy and England and it ended in the latter’s defeat. However, one important thing happened in the Siege of Compiègne: Joan of Arc was taken prisoner of war. Joan of Arc was captured by Lionel, Bastard of Vendôme, who was working for John. John sold Joan of Arc to the English for 10,000 livres, this event leading to her execution a few months after the Siege ended, on 30 May 1431. She was burned at stake in Rouen, France, aged about 19. Her remains were thrown into the Seine. 489 years later, Joan of Arc was canonized by Pope Benedict XV on 16 May 1920. #elizabethwoodville #elizabethwoodvilleedit #jacquettaofluxembourg #joanofarc #jeannedarc #jehannedarc #history #medievalhistory #medievalfrance #medievalengland #15thcentury #hundredyearswar #100yearswar #peterofluxembourg #johnofluxemburg #womeninhistory #womenshistory #luxembourg #frenchhistory #histoire #histoiredefrance #englishhistory #thewhitequeen #theladyoftherivers #philippagregory

#OTD 20th March 1469 Cecily of York was born at the Palace of Westminster, the 3rd daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. Cecily was born in the midst of The Wars of the Roses, one of the most turbulent times in English history. Contracted to the future King James IV of Scotland, upon the death of her father and her uncle (Richard III) assuming the throne, the contract was negated. At this point she, along with her siblings, were declared illegitimate and her parents marriage unlawful (her father had been pre-contract to Eleanor Talbot of Sudeley Castle) Following the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth, Cecily along with her sisters had their legitimacy reinstated and their status as princesses restored. Her sister Elizabeth went on to marry Henry VII. Cecily married 3 times, Ralph Scrope (which was later annulled) then John Welles, 1st Viscount Welles, the half-brother of Margaret Beaufort, then finally to Stir Thomas Kymbe. Cecily died aged 38 on 24th August 1507. #HouseofYork #Plantagenets #EdwardIV #ElizabethWoodville #RichardIII #TheWarsoftheRoses #HenryVII #LivingHistory #Theatre #TV #Film #Education #SchoolWorkshops #Entertainment #PublicSpeaking #CostumeDrama #History #TheTudors #Elizabethan #SpeakingoftheStuarts #Regency #Georgians #Victorians #Tudorials #LetsTalkTudors #TheTudorExperience #PTLH #Pasttimeslivinghistory #Thegotolivinghistorygroup Image: Stained glass depiction of Cecily at Canterbury Cathedral

On 20th March 1469, Elizabeth Woodville, queen of Edward IV gave birth to a daughter, who was named Cicely (or Cecily, spellings differ), presumably after her grandmother, Cicely Neville, Duchess of York. During her childhood, Cicely was considered as a possible bride for the son of James III of Scotland, but she suffered a dramatic loss in status when her father died, and her uncle, Richard III had Cicely and all her siblings declared illegitimate. After the battle of Bosworth, Cicely and her sisters were restored to legitimacy, but there was to be no royal husband for the princess. In 1487, she married John, Viscount Welles, the half-brother of Lady Margaret Beaufort. Cicely and Lady Margaret seem to have been on good terms and when Cicely was widowed and made a second marriage in 1503 that Henry VII disapproved of, Lady Margaret averted the worst of the king’s anger. Read more on Cicely’s love match here http://bit.ly/1JiE3PR Cicely is second from the left in the stained glass originally at Canterbury Cathedral. #yorkists #warsoftheroses #edwardiv #elizabethwoodville #cecilyofyork #cicelyofyork #historyofroyalwomen #elizabethofyork #ladymargaretbeaufort

#twofortuesday - These Philippa Gregory novels caught my eye at a thrift store after binging the Starz series. The White Queen, The White Princess and The Spanish Princess series kept me company during all the frequent feeding and pumping sessions when my daughter was a newborn. I knew I wanted to learn more and read the books. Now my daughter is 18th months, and I’ve been thinking about finally starting these books. Have you read any of her books? What about the shows? If you’re a mom how did you get through the long fourth trimester days and nights? ♥️

"Believe in the heart of the cards": pick a card, pick a woman bullied ON THE STAGE by Richard III Happy Women's day everyone!🏵️🌼 This post allows me to kill two birds with one stone: celebrate women (and focus on how they are able or not to endure the disgraces and injustices they have to face everyday) and introduce some characters of 'Richard III' by William Shakespeare. Maybe I can use the same format for the other characters...what do you think?🙃 P.S. Since I've recently published two videos about Richard III biography, I thought I could move on his fictional representation, so... please DO NOT confuse these descriptions based on the play with the real historical characters and events. 📚 Book Spotlight: The King's Mother by Annie Garthwaite Good evening everyone I was lucky enough to receive a copy of The King's Mother by Annie Garthwaite yesterday. I was a huge fan of her first book Cecily so I am very excited to read this book soon, especially as it's set in one of my favourite periods of history. Huge thanks to @vikingbooksuk for sending a copy to Rossiter Books! Out 11 July 2024. Find out more about the book below ⬇️ What's your favourite period of history? ...................................................................................... 1461. Through blood and battle Edward has gained England’s throne – king by right and conquest – eighteen years old and unstoppable. Cecily has piloted his rise to power and stands at his shoulder now, first to claim the title King’s Mother. But to win a throne is not to keep it and war is come again. As brother betrays brother, and trusted cousins turn treacherous, other mothers rise up to fight for other sons. Cecily must focus her will to defeat every challenge. Wherever they come from. Whatever the cost. For there can be only one King, and only one King’s Mother. From the Wars of the Roses to the dawn of the Tudor age, this is a story of mothers and sons; of maternal ferocity and female ambition - of all they can build and all they can destroy. #thekingsmother #anniegarthwaite #historicalfiction #waroftheroses #cecilyneville #margueriteofanjou #elizabethwoodville #margaretbeaufort #newbook #bookpost #bookpic #favauthor #favgenre #bookseller #rossiterbooks #bookblogger #bookinstagram #bookinstagrammer #ilovebooks #ilovereading

Who doesn’t love Elizabeth Woodville?! Or at least… who isn’t fascinated by her? As part of my Women’s History Month celebrations, I’m going to focus on the 15th century queen whose beauty, mystery and controversy continues to fascinate us today. Elizabeth Woodville first came to prominence in the 1460s, when it became public knowledge that she had secretly married the new English king, Edward IV. A renowned beauty who resisted the King’s attempts to woo her, Elizabeth captured the handsome Edward’s respect, and possibly even love. However, knowledge of Edward and Elizabeth’s marriage sent shockwaves throughout the kingdom. Edward had only recently won the crown during the Wars of the Roses, and it was expected that he would cement his rule with a foreign alliance and marriage to a foreign bride. Elizabeth was effectively a commoner, who was also a widow of a man who fought against Edward! Elizabeth certainly wasn’t the most popular queen, but she soon proved her mettle! Being a queen during the bitter conflict of the Wars of the Roses required immense strength, and Elizabeth endured loss of her throne and the execution of family members. Her family’s significant rise also attracted hostility amongst the nobility. Yet she and Edward proved to be a successful partnership, (despite Edward’s infidelities!), and their reign brought much prosperity to England. When Edward died suddenly in 1483, Elizabeth worked tirelessly to pave the way for her young son to assume the throne. Sadly, her boys would become the missing Princes in the Tower, and her reputation would be damaged during Richard III’s reign. It’s remarkable that Elizabeth kept fighting after all that suffering, yet she supported Henry Tudor’s bid for the throne and his subsequent marriage of her eldest daughter. Elizabeth helped create the Tudor dynasty, after becoming a formidable force during the dying days of the Plantagenets. After enduring and overcoming so much, it’s unsurprising that Queen Elizabeth Woodville continues to inspire women 500 years later!

These may look like ordinary tiles, but they tell the dramatic story of a clandestine mediaeval romance. Discovered during excavations at Grafton Regis Hermitage Priory in 1965, these 15th century tiles are decorated with the white rose of the House of York and the Woodville coat-of-arms. The combined emblems were likely laid to commemorate the marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville on 1 May 1464. Their location may even indicate that the couple’s secret marriage took place in the Hermitage Chapel, close to Elizabeth’s birthplace. The Chapel was most likely used as a private place of worship for the Woodville family. During the reign of Edward IV, the building underwent major reconstruction and later fell into decay following the family’s fall from power. In 2000, King Charles III planted a ‘Woodville Oak’ at the site of the Hermitage. The tiles are currently housed at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. The museum’s archeological curator, Mr Donnelly-Symes, said: ‘the exact location of the wedding is uncertain, but one theory is that the marriage may have taken place in Grafton Regis - perhaps the only village in Britain that can lay claim to a royal wedding’. #elizabethwoodville #edwardiv #medieval #history #plantagenet #thetudors

”It’s a comfort to know that they are both with God now. There was a moment when I thought you were gone from me, too.” ”Only one moment? Then you’re lucky. When you broke sanctuary, I stood by your side. When I saw you🩸an old man in his sleep, I stood by you again. I never doubted you...until I came into your room that night.” ”This? This is what has been burdening you?” ”You lay with her like you loved her. Like she could so easily take my place.” ”Neither she nor any other woman could ever take your place. Elizabeth, you knew when you married me that I would not be a husband that would faithfully sit at your feet.” #rebeccaferguson #maxirons #elizabethwoodville #thewhitequeen

🎨 Posthumous portraits of King Edward IV, England’s first Yorkist king, based on a lost 15th century depiction. In both portraits, Edward is seen wearing a black cap and richly brocaded gold gown. In the first portrait, Edward is clearly showing signs of the corpulence that he, much like his grandson Henry VIII, was affected by later in life. Dated to c. 1520, it was most likely painted by an English or Flemish artist and was listed in a 1542 inventory of Whitehall Palace. The second portrait dates to the late Elizabethan age, c. 1597-1618. It is currently housed in the primary collection at the National Portrait Gallery. #thetudors #edwardiv #plantagenets #medieval #elizabethwoodville

Did you know Elizabeth Woodville had Italian ancestry? Today we take a look at her great-grandmother, a member of the House of Orsini — Sveva Orsini. The Orsini family had a great importance in the history of Italy. This Roman noble house produced no less than five Popes: Stephen II (752–757), Paul I (757–767), Celestine III (1191–1198), Nicholas III (1277–1280), and Benedict XIII. Also, there were 34 Orsini Cardinals, as well as many Condottieri. Another notable member many will recognise is Clarice Orsini, who was the daughter of Jacopo Orsini and Maddalena Orsini, who was both his wife and cousin, both belonging to the house of Orsini. Clarice was the wife of Lorenzo il Magnifico. ⚜️ #elizabethwoodville #jacquettaofluxembourg #edwardiv #thewhitequeen #twq #englishhistorynerd #englishhistory #medievalhistory #medieval #medievalengland #medievalitaly #italianhistory #storiaitaliana #donneitaliane #storiadelledonne #renaissance #renaissanceitalienne #rinascimento #rinascimentoitaliano #italianrenaissance #svevaorsini #orsini #ursinis #famigliaorsini #clariceorsini #lorenzoilmagnifico #lorenzodemedici #imedici #romehistory #frenchhistory

My latest podcast is now live and it’s all about this absolute powerhouse of badassary, Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England, known to history as the “she Wolf of France”. Margaret was the wife of King Henry VI and was a huge player in the Wars of the Roses. Ever since, she has been vilified, viewed as a monster by many. I however argue that Margaret was both a good queen and moreover that there isn’t really much justification for any of the hate flung her way.
