🍿 CARPENTER STACK 🍿 Non-book post today while I’m doing some movie shelf reorganization and I want to feature one of my favorite directors: JOHN CARPENTER!!! Carpenter, to me, is the king of the B-movie as he brings an incredible eye and patient filmmaking to genre films. I mean, look at how many classics he had, especially in that run from Halloween in 1978 all the way to about In the Mouth of Madness. He did horror, action, sci-fi. All of it. The Thing and Halloween are both probably in my top 5 favorite movies. They are amazing. So many others are really good. Big Trouble in Little China is one of the most bonkers fun films I’ve seen. They Live and The Fog, Christine and Escape From New York. All so good. I shamefully haven’t seen Starman or Assault on Precinct 13 yet. Yes, you can shame for it. Se dovessimo rappresentare la storia commerciale (e la stessa esistenza) dei digitali a led dovremmo disegnare un grafico che somiglierebbe più ad un triangolo isoscele senza base che non ad una parabola. Dal ‘72 al ‘74/‘75 l’ascesa vertiginosa a cui segue un’altresì vertiginosa discesa sino al ‘77. Alla fine degli anni ‘70 i led sono già praticamente sorpassati, all’inizio degli anni ‘80 quasi del tutto svaniti. Eppure John Carpenter, nel suo “1997: fuga da New York” (film del 1981 ambientato nel futuro, nel 1997 appunto) piazza al polso di Jena Plissken un timer che ha proprio un’affissione digitale a led rossi. Questa scelta credo trovi spiegazione nell’idea di futuro ed innovazione tecnologica che ai led venne associata all’inizio degli anni ‘70 e che, nonostante ormai i dispositivi da polso abbiano raggiunto ben altri livelli evolutivi, ancor oggi quell’affissione (complici sicuramente anche le forme ardite e ricercate degli orologi che la ospitavano) continua immutata a restituire. Oggi come oggi, in un’epoca in cui la funzione di segnare l’ora di un orologio è diventata sostanzialmente superflua, i led riescono ancora ad essere oggetti sia evocativi, poichè portatori di elementi distintivi della loro epoca, sia suggestivi, con forme ancor oggi “futuribili”.
