Parents with picky eaters - have you tried offering a “tasting plate” alongside your child’s main meal? This strategy works great at home, but I especially love using it at restaurants. If you have a kid who routinely wants the buttered pasta or chicken nuggets when you’re out to eat, get them the pasta or something else they would like and then offer it along with a “tasting plate,” or a small plate that includes a little bite of each of the different foods from everybody else’s dishes. Don’t pressure them to eat - just put it next to their plate and then enjoy your meal. You might be wondering what on earth the value is in this... 👉First, it’s convenient for YOU, because you’re providing many different exposures to new foods without having to take the time and energy to prepare/cook them. (And it can sometimes take many repeated exposures before a child will accept a new food, so more is better) 👉It also allows you to serve several new foods along with a known favorite, which is another way to help make exposures less stressful & more successful. Less stress means less potential for food battles, and increased likelihood they’ll try something new. 👉Tiny portions are just less intimidating! Cow’s 🐮 milk offers an easy way to help kids meet their calcium needs - but it’s not the only way! If you have a child who does not drink milk 🥛 for whatever reason, this post also has some non-dairy foods to consider that also offer calcium + a whole host of other health-promoting nutrients. In case you’re curious, here’s how much daily calcium kids need per the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), or the set of reference values used to assess nutrient intakes for generally healthy people: ✔️ 700 mg calcium per day for toddlers ages 1 to 3 ✔️ 1,000 mg calcium per day for kids ages 4 to 8 ✔️ 1,300 mg calcium per day for kids ages 9 to 18 While it can be helpful to know how much calcium is recommended daily, it’s even more important to get a sense of how these DRIs translate into actual foods when you go to feed your kids. January is tough! 1 in 3 people won’t have enough money to last until the end of the month, which is a pretty scary prospect if you don’t have enough food in the house to last till payday. So what can you do? You’ve got to eat, so these 5 tips should be able to help keep food on the table. 1. We all know about yellow stickers, they’re a great way to save cash on your food. Obviously they can be hit and miss as. Speak to a member of staff to find out if theres a specific time that the bargains are put out. 2. The Olio app is a fantastic option for those people really struggling. It lists food that would otherwise be thrown away by supermarkets and other food businesses, that’s been collected by Olio volunteers who then distribute it to anybody that wants it. It’s always free. 3. Too Good Too Go offers discounted food that would normally be thrown away at the end of the day, that’s still perfectly edible. The food comes from supermarkets and restaurants. You pay a reduced price for the food via the app and then go and collect your ‘Magic Bag’ which will contain a selection of food. You’ll not know what’s in the bag until you collect it, so it’s a bit of a risk if you’re relying on that bag for feeding the family, as it could be a whole bag of lettuce, but it could be a bag full of useful grocery products. 4. Iceland offers its Food Club Card where it offers interest free loans of between £25 and £100 to be spent in its stores, which is then repayable at a set rate of £10 per week. It’s very useful for anyone that might need an extra food shop at the end of the month while waiting to be paid. 5. Food banks are of course in the news a lot these days. You can speak to your local council for advice on how to get help, or an organisation such as The Trussell Trust has a wealth of useful info. 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 What comes out of our mouths as adults at mealtimes is often without second thought and with all the best intentions. When you’ve made a meal, which tastes great and you ‘just 𝘒𝘕𝘖𝘞’ if they take a mouthful they will enjoy it, it’s easy to slip into “just take a bite” or “its yummy”. Realistically, we will all be emotionally invested in what our children eat. After over 9 years working as a feeding therapist, now more than ever I understand the power of what and how we talk to children at mealtimes. Phrases & language can transform mealtimes to be hugely positive, stress free and a positive learning experience but equally can also result in tantrums, tears and endless stress. I’ve shared 5 key phrases I hear a lot at mealtimes, and why they don’t necessarily work long term. These phrases can cause: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 - which can increase mealtime anxiety, or make a child feel like they have failed if they don’t eat or try something 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞 - in my experience lots of children really like the idea of being able to try something but some days it’s just too hard! Parents can also feel shame or judgement when others comment on what their child is or isn’t eating.
