High protein snack ideas??? Yes please!!! The best snacks are simple. No fancy ingredients and just quick to prepare. This has always been a favourite of mine - Greek yoghurt with protein powder, granola and fruit. I don't usually like buying cereal as most are so high in added sugar. This one though is so damn good. Not only does it taste delicious but is incredibly low in sugar but high in protein. Also this is 38g protein 😁😁 When looking at the 'added' sugar content of food products, ideally you want to aim for 15g or less per 100g. Also like ok for foods where sugar isn't one of the first ingredients listed. Although too much sugar isn't great for our health we do need some sugar, especially glucose as this is our main energy source. A scoop of my favourite Grain Free Granola gives you 13 of these, so you are halfway there and you’ve only just started your day...compare that to ones that may be in a box , with seed oils (inflammatory) and sugar (addictive, blood sugar spiking and inflammatory). Ingredients 💫 3 cups of nuts of your choice (raw almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts and/or macadamias, roughly chopped) 💫 ½ cup sunflower seeds and pepitas 💫 ½ cup collagen (I use my wholebody collagen - link in bio) 💫 1 cup dessicated coconut 💫 ½ cup ground flax meal 💫 ¼ cup goji berries 💫 2-3 tablespoons coconut oil 💫 1 pinch salt Method 1. Mix dry ingredients in bowl and coat with coconut oil. 2. Spread out in a pan on the stove and cook for a couple of minutes. 3. Intuitive eating vs calorie counting vs macro counting ⬆️⬆️ There is no one approach that is the magic button. Our bodies are built differently to each other and honestly, what works for you isn't necessarily going to work for me. You need to do what works for you and what feels right for you. I personally don't believe in calorie counting. I don't like assigning a number or something that feels like a currency to food. But if it works for you, then that's great. There's no right or wrong approach. My preference for me is to focus on intuitive eating with an emphasis on protein intake. I try not to neglect my other macros because I need carbs to provide my body with the energy source it needs to get through a workout - glycogen and fats assist with controlling blood sugar levels and absorbing some essential vitamins and minerals. Remember, at the end of the day, food is there to be celebrated. Eat the damn chocolate, cake, chips whatever you want. Apple and mixed berry crumble. I've been trying to find different options for snacks throughout the day that aren't just fruit. With the weather getting colder, I also want something that is comforting. I wanted to come up with an alternative to the typical buttery and sweet apple crumble that wouldn't leave me restricting on other foods later in the day but also gave me the nostalgia feeling from childhood. Small steps working towards recovery. For this recipe, I've made a granola for the crumble topping. I've also stewed the apples in just water and then added cinnamon and mixed berries at the end. The apples and berries will give this crumble the level of sweetness that I like. It might not be cold today but this soup is my favourite and such a comfort meal. Ingredients Whole pumpkin - mine was somewhere between 2-3kg 2 brown onions Curry powder/paste - I used Vindaloo. Trust me, it takes this soup to the next level. Vegetable stock Butter beans and cannellini beans - again trust me, they work and don't change the flavour. Nutrition tips: Beans Beans are a legume, they are rich in plant based protein and are rich in fiber. Butter beans and Cannellini beans are also known as white beans, and can be substituted for each other. They have a mild flavour and when added to meals such as this pumpkin soup, add nutrients. The beans are blended up with the soup, therefore adding a smooth consistency to the soup. The beans in this soup make it more nutrient dense. This is your reminder that not all high protein breakfasts need to be eggs, beans, protein smoothies etc. This one here... protein pancakes is about 25g protein. I promise there are 2 pancakes under all the yoghurt and berries. I used the Greens protein pancake mix and Siggis yoghurt pouch. Keep breakfast interesting by mixing it up and trying new things. Yoghurt is an easy way to increase your daily protein intake. I like to choose the ones with less sugar and add fresh fruit for the sweetness. This was so filling too. Remember the number on the scale is not an accurate measure of progress. It doesn't account for water intake, how much salt you've had, carb intake or hormone changes. Working from home days mean cooked breakfast. Today I added my chocolate protein shakes and made it like an iced chocolate with a little scoop of ice cream because why TF not. Cafe style breakfast but at home 😋 This was about 60g protein, so about 1/4 of my protein target for the day. I focus on building muscle so I need all the protein. Meal prep Sundays Meal prepping saves so much time during the week, it also helps with not spending extra money and buying convenience foods. I do this every weekend, write up my meal plan for the week, including my exercise. Everything is colour coded so I don't get confused. To save energy and money for deciding what to eat, I have the same dinner M/W and T/Th and also lunch in between. This was something I learnt a while back and it has been a life saver for me. Doesn't work for everyone and that's ok. How I got in to Nutrition 🌱🧑‍🍳 There was once a time a few years ago where the thought of eating a pizza felt like the end of the world. Lockdown lead me to reflect on myself and the misinformation around nutrition and exercise lead me to develop a very unhealthy mindset towards my weight. After loosing nearly 20kg in a very short space of time I was admitted to an eating disorder unit with anorexia where I spent a lot of time during my recovery. I made a promise to myself when I recovered that I would try and help as many people as possible to not fall down that trap and learn how important our nutrition is for both our physical and mental health. I truly love what I do and though is was a really hard time, I am so grateful it put me in a career where I am able to help put right the misinformation people our fed about their diet and nutrition. All I want to do is help people to understand food is something to be enjoyed and celebrated, not something we use to punish ourselves. I feel so privileged to be able to support people in understanding the importance of nutrition and how they can use this to reach their goals and transform their lives. Ok...here me out. The majority of what I eat is nutrient dense. However, this week I'm due for my period...2 days away 😭 I've been craving a dirty burger all week. Now this morning I've done PT and all I had before it was a banana. Which is fine and similar to what I would usually have before a gym session. However, today's PT was later than usual thanks to having the day off. So by the time I did PT I would have usually eaten a proper breakfast and a small snack. So fast forward to post gym, standing around talking as.ypu do. It's 11:20, bloody hungry, still craving that burger. Now I could have ignored my craving and gone for the nutrient dense option I had at home but it's 11:20 and all I've had is a banana. So we're choosing the energy dense option. There's nothing wrong with this!!! Repeat after me...there's nothing wrong with this!!! It still has macros, they're just not great quality and honestly, other than tasting delicious, it's doing nothing for the body. For the rest of the day, I'll focus on balancing this with fruit, vegetables, all the nutritious foods I love and enjoy. Don't underestimate how a smoothie fits into your daily intake. So many people will tell you not to do smoothies because they contain more 'calories' than if you were to eat each item separately. You know what, yes they can. But, you aren't removing any of the goodness from each ingredient like you do with fresh juices. Smoothies can be a great addition to your daily meals. If you look at what you're adding to them, they have an amazing balance of everything you need. This one for example, strawberry, oats, chia, spinach, Greek yogurt, protein powder, avocado, coconut water. It's got protein, carbs, fats, vitamin and minerals. Ticks all my boxes. Super filling and well balanced. So if you want the smoothie, have the damn smoothie. I haven't eaten much today thanks to the migraine I woke up with this morning 👎 Migraine = sleeping most of the day and minimal food because well nausea. Today's post workout nutrition is the humble smoothie. Anything goes here and when I say anything I mean anything. This one is: Mango Strawberry Chia seeds Oats Cashews - trust me it works Maple syrup - sugar free Milk Greek yogurt Protein powder Spinach It is so important that after exercise you are refueling your body. Including a good balance of carbs and proteins assists in better muscle recovery, replenishment of glycogen stores (the energy we use) , muscle synthesis/building and enhanced performance for your next workout. Try not to go more than 2 hours without eating after your workout. If you can't get a full meal in during this period, try to have a small snack that is high in carbs so that you have the energy stores to continue doing what you're doing. Think complex and simple carbs. Remember, when you workout and more so if lifting weights, you are breaking down muscle fibres. You need to eat protein to repair these fibres but to also build more muscle. Remember... The best 'diet' is the one you enjoy and can stick to. A diet shouldn't mean you have to cut out your favorite foods. Restricted eating often leads to binges and unhealthy relationships and feelings towards food. Eat the foods you love but balance them with other foods that are full of nutrients and the stuff our bodies need to function. This plate is carb heavy but I'm having it with protein water (number 2 for the day) to ensure I can hit my protein goals. Plus, I bloody love fruit, I could eat it all day 👌 If I thought ahead and planned this out properly, I would have added some kind of healthy fat to balance my blood sugars after eating my chocolate hot cross buns. Oh well, not the end of the world. Whilst most of us will be gaining a few lbs for the wrong reasons this January... Daryl is celebrating the gains he's earned over the past few months... He didn't decide Christmas was a time to just eat absolutely everything... After dropping body fat with me earlier in 2023... He decided it was time to build some muscle through the winter months... Sunday meal prep for the week Sausage and egg muffins Roasted brussel sprouts - will make honeyed walnuts during the week.
