This is for my mama’s to be. Let’s talk Glucola. This information is worth thinking about. Glucola is toxic and shocks your body by doing something out of the ordinary to test your response. I chose not to get involved even if that meant being dropped from our midwife’s care. It didn’t feel right so I simply told them NO. It’s pure processed artificial sugar and contains other ingredients that put the baby in distress and harms the kidneys and liver. It’s also been found to increase your child’s chances of childhood obesity and diabetes. That sounds like a huge risk for tests that are notoriously known to give false positives. Why take the risk when there are better alternatives? There’s something called the Fresh Test, Kosher Grape Juice and Jelly Beans believe it or not. We personally chose to test at home with a glucose monitor. A glucose monitor with your usual food choices is going to give you a more accurate representation of how your body responds to foods. The glucose screen is just an artificially sugary drink that raises your blood sugar for the sake of seeing how your body responds. Does that sound right? Although the ingredients are def NOT my cup of 🫖 I recently had a client tell me about the insane amount of push back 🫸🏼 she got when she voiced her preference to decline the glucola and consider alternative ways to test her blood sugar.. Do I think glucola is harmful? No. Do I think there are better alternatives without all of the additives and food dyes? Yes. Full disclosure, for a myriad of reasons, I drank glucola for one of my pregnancies and felt zero concern about it. If you have used glucola for your gestational diabetes screen in the past or plan to in the future, it is NOT going to harm you or your baby. And it is a very useful screening tool to catch people who may be challenged to regulate their glucose (even if they don’t end up meeting criteria for gestational diabetes.) But if you are curious about alternatives to glucola, here are some options! I love @thefreshtest or checking your own blood sugars as an alternative. You usually need to order the Fresh Test ahead of time (think around 24 weeks) to screen during 26-28 weeks timeframe. Same goes for ordering glucose monitoring supplies if you choose that option. Let’s talk about the glucose test during pregnancy! I don’t know about you but the glucola drink makes me sick 🤢. So, this time around I opted for the fresh test! And I highly recommend. It tasted so much better than the glucola drink and I didn’t feel nauseous after it. So, why is the glucose test important? They are checking you for gestational diabetes. This is important because if you have gestational diabetes it can increase your risk of c-section, a larger baby, needing to deliver sooner than 40 weeks, increased risk of UTI, high blood pressure and increase your risk of preeclampsia if untreated. Needless to say it’s a good idea to get this test done and any provider would agree. What happens if you fail? If you don’t pass the 50mg 1 hour test. You will be asked to do a 3 hour test. You can fail the first and pass the second one so don’t stress! 🍳Farm Facts Friday! Like all fresh foods, eggs don't last forever. But thanks to their shells, they're rather resilient. The eggs you purchase at the grocery store have been washed and processed which reduces their oxygen barrier and shortens their freshness cycle. The protective layer has been stripped away and now the eggs must be refrigerated. 🍳Did you know that you can determine the age of an egg by placing it in a bowl or glass filled with cold water? Very fresh eggs will sink to the bottom and lay on their sides. If an egg stays at the bottom but starts to tip up on its small end, it's about a week old. If the egg stands on it's end, it's about 2-3 weeks old. These are still acceptable to eat; just not quite as fresh. These "more mature" eggs are no less nutritious than a fresher egg, and most people are unlikely to notice a difference in taste. 🍳Any eggs that are too old to eat and should be discarded will float to the surface. Once enough oxygen has had time to permeate the shell, it forms an air pocket large enough to keep the egg afloat in water. Take it from me, be very careful disposing of these bad eggs! We’re in the swing of a new gestational diabetes screening process and it’s really fun! We noticed (very organically) that when client appointments for the two-hour GD screening with @thefreshtest overlapped, there was lots of chatter, laughing, sharing, and community happening in our waiting room. We loved that so now we intentionally schedule 3-4 clients to come in together at 8am for their diabetes screening. Tomorrow is glucose test day. Since becoming more aware of what is in the products I use to the foods we eat, I do more research before just blindly doing what I am “supposed” to do. (Now before I go on...this is not intended at anyone or to offend anyone) I drank the glucose drink with my first 2 & with the 3rd baby I opted for the dye free...This is to bring awareness!! So back to where I was. I researched what is in that drink...full of dyes and artificial ingredients that I don’t do on a normal basis and definitely don’t want to be chugging a full bottle of red 40 and other dyes at 26 weeks pregnant ☠️ thankfully this is our 2nd baby we are birthing at a birthing center who offers all the options, the @thefreshtest is something I knew I wanted! Our center uses the standard of care, which is a two-step glucose testing method. Step 1️⃣: A 1-hour, 50-gram glucose screening called a Glucose Challenge Test (GCT). If you pass this screening, no further testing is needed. Step 2️⃣: For clients who do not pass the initial screening, a 3-hour, 100-gram screening called the Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) must be completed. Some pregnant people prefer an alternative to the standard Glucola drink, so we offer The Fresh Test, which contains no additives and no artificial flavors or colors. It’s gluten-free, organic, BPA-free, vegan, and non-GMO. Typically, your midwife will diagnose gestational diabetes based on specific blood sugar thresholds and patterns observed during the test. These thresholds and criteria are based on scientific research and clinical studies. ❓ But what if I fail one of the 3 blood draws? ❓ If you fail one level on the 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), it typically means that your blood sugar levels at that specific measurement point exceed the established threshold for normal glucose tolerance. - Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT): Failing one level could mean you have impaired glucose tolerance. This suggests that your body may have difficulty processing glucose efficiently, and you may be at risk of developing diabetes in the future. It's often a warning sign to make lifestyle changes to prevent the progression to diabetes. - Diabetes: If you fail multiple levels during the test, it may indicate that you have diabetes. During my first pregnancy, I started researching all the things. I had been on a journey to eliminate toxins for a few years and my growing baby gave me all the more reason to want to protect my health and hers. Gestational diabetes is tested during weeks 24-28 of pregnancy. This is typically done by giving a sugary drink known as Glucola and then testing your blood sugar levels an hour later. When it came time for my glucose tolerance test, I was not thrilled with the option my OB gave me. I wouldn't drink these ingredients when I'm not pregnant, so why would I drink them now? Glucola is the standard for most pregnancy care. Keep in mind, standard or common does not always equal safe. It is your right to ask questions about the care you're receiving. CHECK THE LABEL. There are many different brands of glucose drinks out there, not all brands will have every ingredient listed, but many will. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to push for an alternative. You are an advocate for your health and your babies. So what are your alternatives? This should be discussed with your healthcare provider, but some alternatives to bring up include: 🌱 @glucoganics is available through their website. Its only 3 ingredients: organic sugar, organic lemon juice, and water. It comes in a glass bottle instead of plastic. There is a letter on their website that you can take to your provider with product information. (I used this during my first pregnancy, I cleared it with my OB & purchased it myself) 🍋 @thefreshtest is another alternative to check out and was developed by medical professionals. Instead of taking the offered glucola drink at my midwives office I opted for @thefreshtest I got it cleared by them prior to my test, and I’m so happy i did. With my first son, I felt so awful after taking the glucola drink. I literally thought I was going to pass out while I waited the hour before my blood work. It’s no surprise if you take a look at some of the ingredients of the drinks offered in doctors offices. The fresh test was delicious and enjoyable and offered no side effects that were bothersome. Save & share with a mom-to-be! 💕 The glucose test is a milestone in any pregnancy - and honestly, one that I dreaded in my own. Simply because I knew the test was not a great option (ingredients-wise) but I didn't know (at the time) what my other options were. I was also dreading the fact that if I failed, I would have to repeat the test a second time. After doing a lot of research and understanding what the ingredients in the drink were, I quickly realized there has to be a better option - nobody, especially during pregnancy, should be consuming these ingredients. Depending on the drink you get, it may contain the following: 🥤Sodium Benzoate: increases risk of inflammation, obesity & more 🥤High Fructose Corn Syrup: linked to obesity, insulin resistance & more 🥤Food Dyes (including Red 40): synthetic and petroleum based; linked to hyperactivity 🥤Artificial or Natural Flavoring: can contain up to 100 ingredients that are not disclosed and are synthesized in a lab 🥤 Brominated Soybean Oil (BVO): most drinks now are made without this, but it's important to be aware of it to ensure your drink does not contain BVO which is linked to several health issues including harm to the nervous system In most cases, if you opt / ask for another option to the test, you're met with disagreement - but if you're prepared with enough information, you can make a better decision for the test. However, I do think it's exciting when there are alternatives out there!! Therefore I wanted to share! The Fresh Test was a no brainier for me when I did research into other ways to test for GD. The ingredients are spot on and the taste of it was similar to drinking a glass of lemonade. I'm so grateful my midwife let me do this! 28weeks 2days. It’s time for the glucose test. Of course I was not doing that awful dye filled one. So I bought fresh test. The process was actually easy to buy, but finding a lab that would pull my blood was damn near impossible. This lets me know they want us to go with the flow for our pregnancy. Things I’ve experience in my pregnancy have been beautiful, but having the knowledge helps. The Fresh Test It really drives me nuts…the, “you shouldn’t eat/drink xyz during pregnancy because it’s not safe.” “There isn’t enough information on xyz so better to stay away from it.” I get it, providers mostly just learn what they’re told and don’t USUALLY (unless they are unicorn OBs or midwives) do their own due diligence to study holistic remedies, nutrition, and root cause medicine in the perinatal space. Sooooo with that, it is touted completely safe to drink Glucola…the gestational diabetes screening drink. Even though it’s just maybe one time, there are several reasons that it should not be the only option given at OBGYN offices. Why? - contains dyes in some options, linked to ADD, allergies, and migraines. -contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO) which is banned in other countries like those in Europe and Japan. It’s a flame retardant! -sodium benzoate which is only considered safe in small doses…why is it needed? - sodium hexametaphosphate which caused kidney damage in rat studies -butylated hydroxyanisole is known to the state of CA to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. - BPA. Most have heard of this and we know to buy BPA free products…it’s linked to miscarriage and neurodevelopment issues. While some experience no side effects, the common side effects are nausea (most common that people have told me), vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, dizziness, and headaches after downing a bottle of Glucola. It’s not that women still drink this that gets me fired up, it’s the lack of informed consent. The lack of OPTIONS! Did you know you have other options? Most are told they can prick their finger and use a blood glucose monitor or hemoglobin A1C test to determine if they have GD if they don’t want to drink Glucola. I think the Fresh Test is the easiest alternative as it tastes rather refreshing and doesn’t have the same nasty ingredients as Glucola. Let’s talk glucose test swap! When I was pregnant with my first 6 years ago with barely any knowledge something intuitively said you want me to drink what?!? But I can’t change my cat litter? 🩸 the gestational diabetes talk 🩸 Blood sugars are a sensitive topic. Just like any other situation, we midwives encourage clients to be responsible for the decisions they make. We also encourage them to do their research and find what approach they find is most effective for their needs. I’m not a fan of the medicalized approach to the GDM Sceening, nor the labeling it brings. I want more information when it comes to what we’re doing. We choose to do the work and choose the foods that best fit our needs for this pregnancy, if it’s a risk we are facing. We start with nutritional counseling and get blood sugars balanced first — THEN, if it’s still a concern, we can go on to do more in-depth monitoring. Don’t fall for the one-size-fits-all approach the doctors bring to the table. This approach puts everyone into a box and slaps a label on it. We are all different, have different needs, and require different resources. We take responsibility, and I’m proud of my clients when they do this as well. I think screening for gestational diabetes is important (I’ve had it) but not by consuming this toxic drink. This drink is full of toxins + ingredients even banned in other countries & linked to cancer but yet doctors still are using it as a screening tool. Being educated and armed with information is more important than ever. I will not be consuming this drink ever again (the more you know).
