Happy Earth Day 🌎 from #inthestudio @frontdoorstories planting some native crocuses that overwintered in these pots that we overwintered from @prairieoriginals for some naturalization in the garden. We will have a small selection available this year once we have everything up and running again for the season. I will keep you posted on their arrival. The ground is warm but a bit wet for all garden tasks and being that these little babies needed a home I was inspired to do some planting on earth day, we are not usually this blessed with gardening temps at the end of April so this is a bonus. Some garden tasks that can be started are pruning shrubs and tall perennial stalks but try to keep the leaves on the gardens for moisture retention and the good bugs who are still waking up from winter hibernation. Adding mulch or laying out new beds are possible along with some early direct seed sowing like lettuce, Swiss chard and carrots for a possible early crop of your own produce. You can start these in pots in full sun and have them by your door to water and harvest as needed. The three famous gardens are said to express the “Setsugekka”, which translates into snow, moon and flowers, the three most beautiful aspects of nature, through different times of the year. I visited the one in Kanazawa called Kenroku-en. It was developed fastidiously over two full centuries and then maintained quite meticulously. It was open to public in 1871. Spring Blush Peas This beautiful bicolor variety produces loads of sweet and crunchy pods. Which are great for eating many different ways. Fresh is best in my opinion. The vigorous vines get between 5-6ft tall. So they need some kind of support to grow up. I've read that this is a hyper tendril variety which produces edible sweet tendrils. Something new I hopefully can try this year. So if you haven't sowed your peas yet don't worry you still have time to. Our girls 🐑 This lot are all pregnant for the second time on our farm and we cant wait to meet the next round of baby lambs. The sire is our big boy 'Nutto' or 'Nuts' 😅 He will be leaving our farm shortly as we will need a different blood line to continue the growth of our flock. This year versus last year. I started my gardening addiction last year. I couldn’t understand why out of the 30 plus tomato seeds that I planted, that I only got a grand total of four full grown tomato plants. But in 365 days I’ve learned so much. One seed at a time was the biggest lesson learned. Too many tomato seedlings at one time can cause root rot, bacterial infestation, fungal infestation, and many more issues. I’m proud of where I am today and I am hopeful for who I will be in the future.
