Spring flowers are popping out all over. Here are an early rhododendron (name unknown), woodland phlox, Jacobβs ladder (two varieties), Virginia bluebells, a bearded iris, the first pink columbine, and fresh fern leaves and fiddleheads. With our construction project we lost some plants (no foxgloves, for instance, the young seedlings got buried in the excavation), but others proved remarkably resilient, coming back after being dug up and basically pushed to the side. Weβre just now trying to reconstruct some of the plantings ourselves in a small way with transplanting from other spots in the yard. No budget left for major landscaping!

π«π· Despite my 1,414-day Duolingo streak, Iβm not sure my French is much better. I loved French at school, but I think I was the only one. It was the only language the school taught, so when it came to being allowed to choose a language for GCSE at the end of Year 9, I chose...err...French. π Based on the French textbooks we had at school (Encore Tricoloreβ¦1980s vintage), everyone in France lived in La Rochelle, wore stripy tops, rode a bicycle, and sold strings of onions. π» The first French teacher we had was convinced there was a ghost in the corridor, and used to go out to look for it periodically. His favourite activity was to say a word in English, and throw a ball at someone. They then had to translate the word into French and throw the ball back. Quite innovative for the mid-90s. Inevitably, someone once threw the ball back with such force, it knocked him over. π₯ The second French teacher had bad knees. These seemed to be the sum topic of conversation, although Iβm not sure we ever learnt the French for knees. He was so bad at keeping order, my parents complained. He responded saying that I was in a βlively classβ, something the βmodern style of language teaching dictated. π₯ The third teacher was French. You might think this was advantageous. I remain unconvinced because much of her French bore little relation to the textbook, so much so, an Ofsted inspector once went up and corrected something on the whiteboard. πΆThey do say languages and music go together, and I can see why. β¨ Do you ever worry about missed opportunities? π± I was reminded the other day of a story about a commuter who presented himself at the customer assistance desk at London Waterloo as he had missed his train to Clapham Junction. His complaint was that the barriers to the platform had closed, as is normal practice, 30 seconds before his train was due to depart. π¬π§ For anyone not in the UK, Clapham Junction is approximately three miles from London Waterloo and is the busiest station in the UK. Around 200 trains an hour pass through the station. In true British fashion, the commuter spent over half an hour at London Waterloo, complaining to the assistant at the desk. The assistant was, of course, unable to help. πͺ΄ During that time, a total of 16 trains had departed for Clapham Junction, a journey time of around seven minutes. πΏ Itβs easy to get wound up in worrying about all the times when weβve missed out, the times we said βnoβ, but should have said βyesβ.
