#OTD Archduchess Maria Theresa married Francis Stephen, son of the Duke of Lorraine, on February 12, 1736 at the Augustinian Church in Vienna. Maria Theresa was the eldest daughter and heir of Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. Both wore white, the bride especially radiant. The British Ambassador Sir Thomas Robinson wrote that: "What was most remarkable about the bride's dress was, that besides the other incumbrances of great loads of diamonds upon her head and neck, the very robe itself was embroidered, to use that expression, with diamonds."¹ Afterwards, a commemorative medal was struck with the words: "Votorum tandem compotes" ("Having at length the fruit of our desires"). A love match, the marriage of Maria Theresa and Francis was, for the most part, happy, and they went on to have sixteen children. This is St. Salvator Church, a Roman Catholic Church in the Klementinum, in Old Town, Prague, Czech Republic. As early as 1578 - 1581, the Society of Jesus, led by Rector Giovanni Paolo Campana, laid the foundations of the building, then a chancel and a transept were built. In 1581, the primate of the neighbouring Jewish ghetto, Mordechai Maisel donated 100 thalers to build the church, which testifies to a completely unprecedented tolerant atmosphere and the peaceful coexistence of different religions within Rudolfinian Prague. Marie Antoinette - The early years Maria Antonia was born on 2nd November 1755 - an inauspicious date as 2nd November is All Souls’ Day, a Catholic day of mourning. She was the 15th of 16 children born to Empress Maria Theresa, ruler of the Hapsburg Empire. Not just a prolific mother, the Empress was also a formidable leader who continued to work on her state papers during and immediately after the labour. As a child Maria Antonia developed as a good musician playing the harpsichord, harp and flute. She was an excellent dancer and had a beautiful singing voice. Though a tutor send from France described her as "more intelligent than has been generally supposed," but since "she is rather lazy and extremely frivolous, she is hard to teach.” Born an Austrian Archduchess, Maria Antonia was brought up in luxury, but also a relatively informal court. The strict protocols of Versailles that awaited her, as she was married off aged just 14, were to come as quite a shock. He didn’t get to live there for long since he was executed in Mexico three years after the castle was finished. 🐬 Empress Sisi is a shadowy figure in the history books - much to her own design. The title, "The Reluctant Empress," sums up Sisi's life perfectly. Plucked from her family by sheer fate and thrust into the unwelcoming Viennese court and over-powered by her mother-in-law at every turn, Sisi retreated. She took her duties up only sparingly and then begrudgingly and then not at all. While I had the upmost sympathy for her in the beginning (she reminded me a lot of the late Diana, Princess of Wales) my sympathy turned to annoyance and I was, quite frankly, glad when this book was over. Through no fault of the author, we are dragged along like one of Sisi's fatigued ladies-in-waiting as Sisi flits from hobby to hobby like a middle school child, all in an attempt to avoid her real job, that of Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, and, perhaps most importantly, that of mother to her children. Sisi's story is told in detail, with many first hand accounts throughout. However, one may need to brush up on the Austro-Hungarian political scene before diving in, as very little background is provided to catch the reader up to speed. I know many people are fascinated by Sisi. I however, do not subscribe to this fascination. The Capuchin’s Crypt in Vienna (also known as the Imperial Crypt), is the burial chamber for the House of Hapsburg. Almost 400 years of Hapsburgs are here, including several of the great Emperors and Empresses. Some of the sarcophagi are ornate and elaborate, while others are quite simple. One of particular interest I discovered was Zita, the last Empress of Austria. Zita lived most of her life in exile after she and her husband were deposed in 1918 at the end of WW1. Her husband died in 1922, and Zita moved around Europe with her numerous children, relying on other royals or states to have her as a guest. At the outbreak of WW2, Zita and her children were forced to flee Europe and arrived in North America. They ended up residing in Quebec throughout the war, and both she and some of her children were involved in the war effort. Zita returned to Europe in the 1950s, but was still prohibited from entering Austria because of her exile, though Austria did lift entry restrictions on Hapsburg children born after 1919. Only in 1982 were the restrictions on her exile relaxed, and Zita visited Austria for the first time in nearly 6 decades. Sometimes, a legacy is far bigger than what is remembered. Maria Theresa was the only Hapsburg queen. De facto Empress of the Holy Roman Empire and one of only three women recognized for impacting the history of Europe forever. Even today, her shadow is indelible in Vienna. However, behind that shadow is also the story of her three daughter. Mimi collected one of Europe’s most detailed art collections, preserving them and keeping her collection intact. Marie Antoinette was the most infamous, and despite her rep, she attempted to preserve the monarchy as long as possible. Maria Carolina, still reviled in Italy for her husband’s mistakes, was the power behind the throne of Naples for years, putting off Napoleon as long as she could. Their stories, though many are now forgotten, reveal four powerful women behind many of the European thrones. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It was super long but well worth the time it took to read. #금요일용산동 : 맛점 후 사촌동생은 저녁 약속 전 과제하러 귀가하고 나랑 이모는 초대권 받았던 합스부르크 600년전 보러 국중박으로! 예~전에 여기서 패션위크할 때도 오고 이런저런 전시보러 곧잘 왔었는데 정말 오랜만에 온 🙂 웨이팅이 길다고 들어 걱정했는데 다행히 바로 입장 가능했다. 안에는 사람이 많았으나 나나 이모나 전시를 꽤 빨리 보는 편이라서 후룩후룩 감명깊게 관람하고 나왔다. 이 후 엄마랑 큰이모 작은이모 큰이모네 사촌동생까지 모여 맛있는 저녁도 먹고 (사장인지는 영 별로였지만..) 날씨도 좋았고 무척이나 즐거웠던 하루 ✨️ 그리고 오늘은 좀비 모드. 왜 벌써 5시가 넘었죠... However this ultimately fell a bit flat for me, perhaps in part because it was billed as steamy but really felt more like a closed door (or at least a "door just barely cracked open") romance and had an almost YA feel to it--appropriate in a lot of ways, as Sisi is only 16 at the start of the novel. Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) of Austria lived a life of opulence and drama. She married her first cousin, Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, in 1854 at the age of 15. She was not a good fit for Habsburg court life and longed to be back in Bavaria riding her horses. Her mother-in-law (and aunt!) Archduchess Sophie tried to micromanage her life and drove her crazy. She became obsessed with having the longest hair and thinnest figure in Austria-Hungary, resulting ultimately in what was clearly an eating disorder. She never recovered from the death of her son Crown Prince Rudolf and his mistress in a murder-suicide pact at his hunting lodge in 1889. In the end, Elisabeth was assassinated by an Italian anarchist while walking along the promenade of Lake Geneva in 1898. Money clearly doesn’t buy happiness. Though I’d be willing to give it a try. Now her life as depicted in the Netflix German series THE EMPRESS, starring the luminous Devrim Lingnau, is the only thing that has gotten me through the past 300 days of rain we’ve had. I think the word I would use to describe the six-episode series dealing with Elisabeth’s early days in Vienna is sumptuous. There is much palace intrigue. People behave badly. Very badly. Everyone wears amazing clothes and gets excited when Franz Liszt or Johann Strauss shows up at the palace to play the piano. Then they behave very badly again. Especially Elisabeth’s brother-in-law (and cousin!) Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, quite the libertine and scallawag. Corsage (2022), Written and Directed by Marie Kreutzer Women behaving badly – this is a genre that interests me, especially when bad behavior is a result of suffocating societal expectations. Vicky Krieps (Bergman Island, Phantom Thread) dominates the screen in a tour de force performance as she portrays the 19th-century Empress Elisabeth of Austria in a film where Kreutzer recreates history. The film became Austria’s official Oscar entry for Best International Feature at the 2023 Academy Awards after Krieps won the Un Certain Regard for Best Performance at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. DP Judith Kaufmann took generous liberty in long-held close ups of Krieps where it is impossible not to feel the intensity of her surging emotional states. While the melancholy of the first half of the run-time seems endless, the second half of the film changes everything. The Empress was known for her beauty and fashion, but in 1877 as she approached her 40th birthday she became dismayed with a future of suffocating ceremonial duties and fading beauty; she rejected the notion that women are required please others in order to be loved. Her unfaithful husband Franz Joseph (Florian Teichtmeister) was only a factor in her resolute discontent. Making plans for a different future that included reckless abandon, Elisabeth undertook travels abroad to visit former lovers and friends while seeking a will to live. The set designs were both barren and lush, the cinematography was outstanding, and the costume designs by Monika Buttinger were opulent. I was impressed with Kreutzer’s anachronistic use of contemporary pop songs, feisty language, and cheeky gestures. The Ottoman Empire was vast. Touching all five major seas of Europe—the Mediterranean, Caspian, Black, Red, and Arabian Seas—it stretched along the top of Africa, down into the Arabian Peninsula, and engulfed modern-day Turkey and Greece. How had this empire become so huge? For nearly 400 years, the initially tiny kingdom had aggressively invaded and subjugated its neighboring countries. Now, it had just swallowed Hungary but, encountering a sharp repulse from Poland, it turned to attack Vienna, the heart of the Hapsburg empire and the key into Western Europe. When the siege began in July of 1683, the Hapsburg emperor fled his city. But Pope Innocent XI knew this was not a time to succumb to fear, and leapt into action. He immediately appealed to King Jan Sobieski of Poland, the same who had been victorious over the Turks a few years earlier in Podhajce. King Jan set out for Vienna in August with a vastly outnumbered force—in fact, the Ottoman army was four times the size of the Polish troops. As he passed the shrine at Czestochowa, King Jan invoked Our Lady’s intercession and aid. Then, just before the battle on September 12th, he and his troops prayed the holy rosary by Innocent XI’s request. By evening, the Ottomans were completely routed and fled the Hapsburg empire. When Innocent XI learned of the Ottomans’ miraculous defeat, he attributed it to the Name of Mary and declared that the Sunday after her Nativity would be dedicated to her Holy Name. This devotion had been practiced in Spain for about a century, traditionally on the octave day of Our Lady’s Nativity in correlation with the Holy Name of Jesus. However, it became a movable feast due to Innocent XI’s decree until 1908, when Pope Pius X declared that it could be celebrated on the actual day of the battle. Schönbrunn in Vienna is vast and, my previous (vivid!) memory is of my dad losing me in the maze when I was 10 years old 🥺 - I could have been ferally roaming the great grounds to this day! 🤷🏻♀️🐾 Despite that 🙄 I’ve always loved the grand glowing-yellow palace. 💛 If you go, I definitely recommend the fuller ‘Grand’ rather than ‘Imperial’ ticket to see the most of this fantastical place (no photos inside otherwise I could show you!), & there’s a great Heuriger (tavern) for wine-tasting in the grounds - you’ll need refreshment! 🌼🥂💛✨🌻
