I’ve been transfixed by rainbows ever since I was little. I loved everything about them; how everyone would stop to look at one, how they have 7 colours whilst my name has 7 letters (and you bet I signed my name for years with every colour of the rainbow getting a letter each!). I love the religious symbolism behind them and I love how they come about after a combination of rain and sun. It’s almost as though the world receives a prize for its indecisiveness. So many things came into play when writing this. I envisioned that, if a rainbow was an indicator of my time on Earth, I’d like to be just past the first quarter. Just above the trees but not quite touching the clouds. In my early 20’s I know what makes me blue and what makes me blush but I haven’t quite figured out how to make my dreams a reality. Maybe I’ll figure it out when I reach the clouds. What would we be able to afford with the money we spend on war? In “An inventory,” I explore just that. “An inventory” first appeared in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸, a wonderful journal run by students at Wayne State University. Thanks to the editors! 𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 The purchases made with the money once spent on war runs something like this: quilts; oranges; breakfasts cooked over crackling flames (for every hand and every name); shaded marketplaces; dried plums; medicine that tastes like bubblegum; dinosaur bandages for scraped knees; teacups; shiny classrooms with teachers who recognize everyone’s faces; playgrounds; rainbow-colored paintbrushes; birthday cakes; parks with yellow daffodils and little green frogs sunbathing on the lilies by the fountain; faucets; showerheads; white cotton beds; soft sofas to rest; quiet armchairs to read; hammocks to sway and feel and wonder and dream; universities; olive trees; great mosaic staircases to gather and sit and learn each other’s languages; glowing stages and open stadiums; bicycle lanes; vehicles that drive on recycled ideas; bowls of soup eaten with bamboo spoons; shampoo; boxes of chocolates and hand-woven socks... Journey🖤 Crazy, I must be Scarred by the idea That love is free So I gave freely Burnt, over and over Still, that idea remained my truth even when the odds were against me First, it was a ‘promise’ in fall Beautiful, trusting, and pure but it was murdered In cold blood! Then ‘fear’ came in spring fear of tomorrow… the uncertainties lingered and eventually swallowed by the unknown Alas! ‘Serenity’ Strong, passionate yet deceitful taking everything Including the fragments of what’s left ‘Hope’ came in-between but not at all hopeful the tears, pain and blood Losing myself to emptiness Resigned to ‘fate’ tried to believe in false vision sold In the end, maybe the puzzle would fit But what if it doesn’t?
