#memademay2024 day 2, early morning picture in the garden before I’m off for coffee and a day at the shop. One of the exciting things about your sewing journey is when you get to that stage when you see a picture of a garment and you think “I could make that”. This jacket was one of those times, so this is a combination of a random Pinterest post and a piece of thrifted old ticking. I hacked the coat dress pattern from the Japanese sewing book Stylish Wraps and this is the result. Probably one of my most worn summer makes. The frock was something I made a couple of years ago for a prairie style sewing challenge. It is based on a 1970s sewing pattern but with added frills and layers made from lace and curtain lining dyed to match. The sweater is made from a small piece of thrifted knit fabric, possibly 1970s…I don’t think there was a pattern. NOBODY IS LOOKING AT YOU!! When I was little and we went to the beach, my sisters and I would drive my mum mad wanting privacy to get changed. They made a changing room out of a windbreaker, or at they very least held a crispy towel up to protect our modesty. Later, mum made the towels into tubes with a drawstring neck so that we could change under them ourselves, all the while tutting and pouring orange squash and muttering “nobody is looking at you!” whilst lighting another fag. And that’s the point of this post. I’ve had SO many messages from people saying they’d love to take a solo trip but are afraid of what people might think, and that’s my message. In this context, no one is looking at you! Or at least, in pity. They might be looking at you and wondering where you get your hair done, or admiring the colour of your nails. They might be thinking what an amazing jacket you’ve got on. They might even be envious, thinking, how lovely. Just to sit, with a coffee, in perfect peace. They might think you have an air of mystery. Panache even. So don’t be afraid. Don’t go hungry or thirsty because you are on your own. Don’t take cover in your hotel room (unless of course you want to). Take a book or paper. Watch the world go by. Order a big dessert and eat the bloody lot. You won’t be too big or too small, or not chic enough. You’ll be just right. Ask a stranger (one that looks like they won’t do a runner) to take a snap, if you want. Generally, people are kind and want to help. And if they don’t, it’s not about you. I met some incredibly inspiring women on this trip. Time to flourish, my friends, and own your space. No need to hide. We all need to stop waiting. If you’ve seen my stories you’ll have worked out I’m in Paris. I’m nearly 53, always wanted to go and never been. Why? Because I’ve always dreamed of being whisked off to Paris. Well, a couple of months ago I decided it was time to just whisk myself off to Paris, twenty minutes later had booked my tickets, so here I am. No more waiting. And the sun is out and I’m having a fab time. I’ve been sightseeing, I’ve tracked down some vintage shops (obvs), I’ve taken myself out for dinner, and yesterday I went on @textile_tours_of_paris which was heaven. I met a whole bunch of likeminded women, so much so that after the tour finished a group of us decamped to a bistro for the afternoon to share life stories. And a moment to recommend Rebecca @textile_tours_of_paris - so knowledgeable, and such wonderful relationships with the shops and businesses we visited- we had access to all sorts of places the public normally can’t get to.
