'The Comic' (1969) 'The Comic' begins at the funeral of an all-but-forgotten fictional silent film comedian, and revisits his career in flashback memories from the grave. It stars Dick Van Dyke (who I hate), Michelle Lee (who I'm indifferent to), and Mickey Rooney (who I loathe). So where does that leave us? The story itself is entertaining enough, if you know nothing about the famous silent comedians of the past, and their spotty personal histories. As it was - for me - it's all been done before. His fictional silent films all borrowed heavily from existing films, and it comes across - again, to me - as another Van Dyke 'look at me; aren't I talented!' extravaganza. The trooping of classic film stars like Cornel Wilde, Jeff Donnell, and Jerome Cowan is a nice touch, though. I'm being especially critical, because he simply isn't my thing. But if you like Dick Van Dyke, and you haven't heard it all before, you will likely find this reasonably amusing and entertaining, although with a slightly copped-out ending. Watched #ANightToRemember (1942) : Richard Wallace makes a fantastic mystery comedy that can be compared to two different films in those individual genres. Alfred Hitchcock can give you a suspense thriller, and some other director could give you a hilarious comedy, but did you ever think that one director could give you one movie with the features of those two different movies? Sounds impossible, right? Believe it or not, Richard Wallace did it! Based on the novel "The Frightened Stiff" by Audrey Roos and William Roos, A Night to Remember tells the story of a murder mystery writer and his wife who enter a new house in the basement. Both of them suspect something is fishy about the place, but they overlook everything until they find the body of a man who was supposed to enter their house in their absence. The cops are clueless, and their investigation goes astray. As expected, the writer investigates things himself with his writer's mind to find a new story for his next novel that will be real and successful. His wife doesn't let him alone, even for a moment, and as we go ahead, we see her as more intelligent than her husband. As he calls her, "Yes, Mrs. Sherlock." One can totally agree. There is a tremendous amount of mystery and so many twists to keep you totally hooked on the screen. By the time you reach the end, you realise that there was so much in the film not to be missed. After running round and round, you come to the centre and find your answers. While the mystery stuff keeps spinning your head, the comedy doesn't stop. It puts your cheeks at work. Brian Aherne has surprised me with his top-notch performance. The beautiful Loretta Young is superb in the role of his wife. In some manner, she is the hero of the film. William Wright, Jeff Donnell, Gale Sondergaard, Sidney Toler, and others have done well in the supporting roles. Lastly, kudos to Richard Wallace for defining a whole new genre with his masterclass. As a child, she adopted the nickname "Jeff" after the character in her favourite comic strip, Mutt and Jeff. To avoid gender confusion, she was sometimes billed as "(Miss) Jeff Donnell." Donnell was signed to a contract by Columbia Pictures while she was active with the Farragut Playhouse in New Hampshire, and she made her film debut in My Sister Eileen (1942). [4] She later had roles in some RKO films. She had a lengthy film and television career in various supporting roles, including the role of Gidget's mother, "Dorothy Lawrence", in Gidget Goes Hawaiian and Gidget Goes to Rome.
