The Big Heat (1953): B- Glenn Ford is a cop who takes on the crime syndicate controlling his city. The cinematography and sets of this film made it look like something out of a 1950s TV show, giving me doubts at the outset. But I looked past that and was rewarded with a solid dark and shadowy film noir, with great dialog and a really surprising level of violence. Ford is solid and seethes as a man on a mission against the corruption he uncovers at every turn. Lee Marvin is good as a malevolent thug but it is Gloria Grahame who is a live wire and steals the show in a stellar performance. You may recognize her as Violet from It's a Wonderful Life (1946). I had never seen her in anything else and was quite surprised.
