Following its New York and LA premieres, Andre de Toth's House of Wax received a general release on April 25th, 1953. It was the first 3D film with stereophonic sound to be presented in a regular theater and the first color 3D feature film from a major American studio. House of Wax revitalized the film career of Vincent Price, who had been playing secondary character parts since the late 1930s. After this high-profile role, he was in high demand for the rest of his career. #houseofwax #mysteryofthewaxmuseum #andredetoth #vincentprice #franklovejoy #phylliskirk #warnerbros #3dhorror #50shorror #classichorror

The Hitch-Hiker - 1953. The first film noir directed by a woman, British Renaissance lady Ida Lupino. Here are some largely positive reviews (lazily copied straight from Wikipedia): The Philadelphia Inquirer said that "with nothing more than three able actors, a lot of rugged scenery and their own impressive talents as producers, authors and director, Collier Young and Ida Lupino have brewed a grim little chiller". The Inquirer critic praised the performances and said the film was "directed with masculine strength by the amazing Miss Lupino". The New York Daily News gave the film three and a half of four stars, saying Lupino made "good and exciting use" of the real-life incident. The New York Times called the film an "unrelenting but superficial study of abnormal psychology coupled with standard chase melodrama". Critic A. H. Weiler complimented the performances and Lupino's "brisk direction", but criticized the plot as excessively predictable. The Detroit Free Press said that the film performed a public service by warning motorists about the dangers of picking up hitchhikers. #the hitchhiker #hollywood #hollywoodgoldenage #edmondobrien #franklovejoy #collieryoung #roseturich

I Was a Communist for the FBI (1951). Matt Cvetic (Frank Lovejoy) has been living a double life as a member of the Communist party in Pittsburgh while simultaneously working as an FBI informant. The film depicts Cvetic as a patriot willing to endure major sacrifices (his brothers and son loathe him for his supposed Communist sympathies) in order to aid the FBI in monitoring Communist activities. The Communists are portrayed as cynical, racist opportunists who dine on caviar paid for by the suckers who donate money to the party. They’re also depicted as willing to murder anyone who steps out of line. Cvetic eventually becomes involved with Eve Merrick, a Communist school teacher (played by the lovely Dorothy Hart) who becomes disillusioned and attempts to leave the party. Can Cvetic help Eve escape before she’s eliminated? The major problem with I Was a Communist for the FBI for modern audiences will be the campy, two-dimensional villains. While the opening of the Soviet archives in the 1990s confirmed that the Soviets had a substantial espionage apparatus in the United States during the Cold War, the film’s Communists are depicted in such a ham-handed, over-the-top manner that a few scenes are inadvertently comical. However, the film does manage to elicit a few thrills during Eve’s attempted escape. Although I only give I Was a Communist for the FBI five or six fedoras, it is worth watching as a historical document for understanding American attitudes towards Communism in the 1950s, and to enjoy for its own merits. For a better anti-Communist noir, I recommend Walk a Crooked Mile (1948). #filmnoir #noir #1950s #1950scinema #iwasacommunistforthefbi #franklovejoy #dorothyhart #classicfilmfan #classichollywood #classiccinema #espionage #oldstars #noirfilm #oldcinema #oldhollywoodstars

Grade: B+ Well-intentioned and well-acted in spite of some very outdated narrative cliches, this war psychodrama works with its flaws to make some powerful points about race relations, especially through a great performance from Edwards. An early and still relevant great in black-led movies. Recommended mainly for Edwards and the relevancy. #homeofthebrave #jamesedwards #franklovejoy #jeffcorey #lloydbridges #stevebrodie #douglasdick

Denver native Margaret Perry (born February 23, 1913; here with Randolph Scott) was one of two daughters of Marie-Antoinette Perry, the actress and director for whom the Tony Awards were named. Her father, Frank Frueauff, worked in the gas and electric industry. Her family had deep roots in Colorado. • Margaret made her stage debut aged 16 in 1929, Broadway followed two years later, as Phyl in John van Druten’s “After All”, starring Humphrey Bogart, then she went to Hollywood for “New Morals for Old” (1932), about a single mother (played by Laura Hope Crews) struggles to raise her son (played by Robert Young) and daughter (Margaret Perry), who find it difficult to listen to her life lessons. • She returned to Broadway for “Ceiling Zero” (1935), in which she played Tommy Thomas and was directed by her mother. The same year, she played a minor bit in the film version for Warner Bros., directed by Howard Hawks, with James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Martha Tibbetts, and June Travis playing the role she created. • She fared better as Joyce Struthers in “Go West Young Man” (1937), with Mae West as Mavis Arden, a movie star who gets stranded in the wild west, featuring Warren William and Randolph Scott. • Back on Broadway, she was directed by her mother in “Now You’ve Done It” (1937) and was Kitty in “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1938), with Frank Lovejoy. • By the 1940s, she was working behind the camera, as assistant to producer Gant Gaither on “The First Mrs. Fraser” (1947), and as director on such shows as” The Shop at Sly Corner” (1949), “Love Me Long” (1949), starring Shirley Booth, and “Mrs. Barry’s Etchings” (1950). Each only lasted a short time on Broadway. • Margaret was married three times, to newspaperman Windsor French; actor Burgess Meredith; and lastly to scenic designer Paul Fanning, by whom she had four children. When the pair divorced in the 1950s, she returned to Hartsel, Colorado to raise her children. Margaret died in April 2007, aged 94, and was survived by three of her four children. One daughter, Toni (Antoinette) died in 2003. Her sister Elaine Perry died in 1986. • • #iusedtobeinpictures #margaretperry #randolphscott #tonyawards #antoinetteperry

Watched #HouseOfWax (1953) : A brilliant remake of a mysterious horror flick and the finest use of 3D technology in the early days. I have seen WB's black-and-white mystery flick, "Mystery of the Wax Museum" (1933), so there was no suspense left for me to watch in House of Wax. I only watched to see how they recreated the B&W flick in colour and the use of early 3Dimension technology. To be frank, I was expecting a little downer, but this was nothing less than the original flick. Rather, it felt visually more attractive due to colour filming and 3D technology. It kept the original material intact and played it safe. Thank God, they did not tamper with the original source material. It was fascinating to know that it was the first 3D film with stereophonic and the first colour 3D feature film from a major studio, right after "Man in Dark" (I haven't seen it). These facts actually make it look better. Nonetheless, the original 1933 will always remain iconic. I was sold on the idea that somebody would write such an intriguing, horrifying, and mysterious script in the early talkie era. An artist can become a monster when someone tries to demolish his artistic work for monetary reasons. This is what caught my attention. And then there was this dead people turning into wax statues thing. I mean, so goddamn frightening. Then one of the witnesses suspects the statues, leading to an investigation—it's all so wonderful to imagine for a movie made in 1933. Charles Belden's "The Wax Works" deserves all the credit for this beautifully written script, and Crane Wilbur wrote such a nice screenplay on the same. Not a moment of drag, not a moment to feel bored. Vincent Price has done so well, almost as well as Lionel Atwill in the 1933 film. Andre de Toth has definitely worked on the details of his framework. Those close-up shots for 3D layers, shadows, an intriguing score in the background, and the pink wax thing never looked that beautiful in colour filming. Simply great! Nicholas Rayn Hermot pinnalla AKA In a Lonely Place on upeasti kerrottu ja monisävyinen film noir - loistava käsikirjoitus toimii upeasti yhteen Humphrey Bogartin ja Gloria Grahamen intensiivisten roolisuoritusten kanssa. Vahva tunnelma tekee simppelistä tarinasta erittäin muistettavan elokuvan, joka kuuluu kiistatta elokuvahistorian klassikoihin. Lopetus on kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessaan nerokas. Nicholas Ray's In a Lonely Place is a well narrated and multi-layered film noir film - the amazing screenplay works brilliantly with Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame's intense performances. The Ssstrong atmosphere makes this simple story a very memorable film that is definitely one of the film history classics. In all its simplicity, the ending is also ingenious. #nicholasray #hermotpinnalla #inalonelyplace #dorothybhughes #1950 #moviecollector #filmreview #humphreybogart #gloriagrahame #franklovejoy #carlbentonreid

From our newly issued Catalog 80: THE HITCH-HIKER (1953). Revised Final Script for the 1953 film, here under its working title "The Cook Story." Carbon typescript master, clean, with just a handful of typeovers throughout. Based on the true account of serial killer Billy Cook. Gilbert and Roy (Lovejoy and O'Brien) are two buddies on a fishing trip who stop to pick up a hitchhiker named Emmett (Talman), whom they learn is an escaped serial killer. To make things more daunting, Emmett informs the buddies of their impending death, carried out once they reach Mexico. This early draft of the script precedes shooting—which began on June 24, 1952—by nearly three months, and includes a bookend context at the beginning and end of the story wherein we are introduced to the home lives (and problems) of the film's two protagonists. The final film takes a more minimal approach, wherein these bookends are removed, and the story begins simply with the two men on a vacation together in the mountains of the California. Shot on location in California. One of Lupino's final (and best known) directorial credits, followed the same year by "The Bigamist" (1953), and finally "The Trouble with Angels" (1966). THE HITCH-HIKER (1953), directed by Ida Lupino, starring Edmond O’Brien, Frank Lovejoy, and William Talman. Well produced, certainly, but the inactivity of the protagonists can make The Hitch-Hiker feel slower than it should be. 8/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ For largely taking place on rather uninteresting terrain and in a car, and being made in the 50s, this film keeps things visually interesting. The score is also fairly helpful in creating tension. The three main actors could have easily given much flatter performances than they did. Talman, especially, gets to showcase some range. Gilbert and Roy have rather little agency in this story. Seldom do they make any decisions of their own, usually taking orders from Myers. The only reason this movie does largely work is because they do occasionally choose to try to get away from him. It can affect the pacing, though. I will praise the writing for the subtlety of its commentary. This film has a lot to say about masculinity, but it never comes at the cost of character. The characters aren’t just mouths for Lupino to spout her opinions. She writes them with nuance so that the commentary comes through their traits and actions.

“Warner’s: 100 Years, 100 Classics.”Perfect for 3D with more than a handful of flying objects coming from the screen, “The Charge at Feather River” (1953), took the 3D cameras out west to excellent box-office effect. Guy Madison stars as Miles Archer a frontier scout on the Colorado territory who is asked by the cavalry at Fort Bellows to aid in rescuing two white women (Helen Westcott and Vera Miles) abducted by the Cheyenne. At the same time he is also providing security for the railroad construction teams. Frank Lovejoy, Dick Wesson and Steve Brodie are along for this treacherous journey. “Always the Star. The Films of Joan Crawford.” “We were a nice snapshot but never a family portrait.” A Westend and Broadway hit in 1948 for Madeleine Carroll, “Goodbye, My Fancy” (1951) provided Crawford a good role, but in another commercial disappointment for Warner’s. Her third project in row with Director Vincent Sherman, she is Congresswoman Agatha Reed. She is off to her alma mater for commencement, but really more interested in renewing a romance with an old flame who now happens to be the college president. Their attempts at rekindling any sparks, come undone when another rival for her affections appears on the scene. Not to mention the screening of her somewhat controversial film which could also jeopardise the college presidents job. Crawford is in the middle of Robert Young (old flame) and Frank Lovejoy (new love interest) with Eve Arden providing acidic support, Janice Rule in her debut and Lurene Tuttle on hand. A $1.1M box-office loser, it was over budget, with Crawford starting to show signs that perhaps to her run at Warner’s was almost over. “No one holds a candle to Joan - when Joan is carrying the torch!” #franklovejoy #oldhollywood #goodbyemyfancy #1951 #texas #janicerule #congresswoman #elegance #robertyoung #oldmovies #filme #cine #lovestory #joancrawford #warnerbrothers #washington #1950s #blackandwhite #mensstyle #evearden #college #shopgirl #vintagehollywood #stylish #homecoming #broadwayplay #icon

This propaganda potboiler from B-movie stalwart Gordon Douglas is the noir-ish tale of a man recruited by the FBI to infiltrate his local chapter of commies… causing his family and friends to question his patriotism. This hard-nosed, un-nuanced anti-Communist movie remains an incredible document of the attitudes and policies that lead to the HUAC hearings and more. Brattle Debut! “The Hitch-Hiker”, 1953 Directed by Ida Lupino
Starring✨Edmond O’Brien✨ ✨Frank Lovejoy✨William Talman✨ Beyond its obvious cultural significance as the only classic film noir directed by a woman, this is simply one of the most nightmarish motion pictures of the 1950s. Inspired by the true-life murder spree of Billy Cook, THE HITCH-HIKER is the tension-laden saga of two men on a camping trip who are held captive by a homicidal drifter who forces them, at gunpoint, to embark on a grim joyride across the Mexican desert. Renegade filmmaking at its finest, THE HITCH-HIKER was independently produced, which allowed Lupino and ex-husband/producer Collier Young to work from a treatment by blacklisted writer Daniel Mainwaring and tackle an incident that was too brutal for the major studios to even consider. #thehitchhiker #hitchhiker #hitch #hiker #1953 #directedby #directed #direct #director #idalupino #starring #stars #star #actor #actress #act #acting #edmondobrien #franklovejoy #williamtalman #filmnoir #blackandwhite #truelife #murder #spree #campingtrip #camping #trip #grifter #gunpoint

Watched #IllSeeYouInMyDreams (1951). : I knew a lyricist could write classic songs, but I never knew that his life story could write a classic movie. The legendary Michael Curtiz had such an underrated classic biopic in his glorious filmography, and nobody told me. Why? IMDb users need to grow up, maybe. 6.8/10 with hardly 1.5k votes doesn't do justice to this moving tale of a lyricist. Gus Kahn was maybe an ugly-looking man (as shown in the film), but he wrote the most beautiful love songs in the history of Hollywood and Broadway. And what an inspiring life he lived! The film follows Gus' life story from the moment he meets Grace, his future wife and partner, teacher, and counsellor for a lifetime. What's there that's not in the film? From sweet romance to a good marriage, drama, comedy, music, tragedy, decline, comeback, and words. What words, though! More than anything else, I am gonna remember those dialogues. They had to be good because the film was based on the life of a man who wrote lovely words. "I don't go begging for favours," says Gus in his lowest phase. I don't know how to take it, but that's my definition of a real man. "Is it okay for a girl of my age to cry?" asks Grace when she wants to cry out loud in front of seniors. So many beautiful dialogues, and then that emotional speech at the end. "I wrote thousands of love songs that say I love you. But I never said it to my girl". "A lot of young men today don't know how to say I love you. So you say it for them, in 32 bars". Gosh, I was literally weeping. Gus Kahn, you great, and Grace Kahn, you beauty! Even I wondered how an ugly man and a beautiful woman could love each other so much, and there was my answer in the last scene when Gus says, "But I didn't know how this face could say to that face that he loves you". Danny Thomas is an absolute wonder, and Doris Day has given fan material to all her admirers. The Great Curtiz knocks a classic out of the box again, but sadly, this one's highly underrated. August 22 - The Hitchhiker, 1953. I was anxious to watch another film directed by Ida Lupino, but unfortunately this one was very routine, to the point of being corny. The suspense seemed pretty manufactured since I figured two big men would be able to pretty capably overpower a smaller man with a gun. They were so busy being overly nice and supportive  to each other they missed several opportunities to escape, it seemed to me. The best thing about this movie is the way the Mexican police are depicted as more on the ball and more motivated to solve the case than the Americans. The Mexican cops were honestly the most attractive characters in the film, even without subtitles in their scenes. #thriller #1950s #idalupino #edmondobrien #franklovejoy #williamtalman #josetorvay #desert #mexico #kidnapping #hitchhiking #directedbyawoman

Barry Sullivan plays Cliff, a friend who suspects Julie's first husband did not commit suicide but was murdered. Her husband ultimately confesses he did it. Julie tries to flee from her husband with the help of Cliff and a police detective (Frank Lovejoy), but Lyle is always one step ahead, culminating on a flight where he kills the pilot. #dorisday #julie1956 #louisjourdan #barrysullivan #franklovejoy #psychokiller #filmnoir #nailbiter
