Paul Auster was the first writer to sign my typewriter. I first read The Music of Chance in 1999, picked up a copy in Paris for the plane ride home after six months of studying in Europe. Later read The Invention of Solitude, just before I started working for @booksandbooks in 2005. Then just a year later, @mitchellakaplan and I had armloads of books for Paul and @sirihustvedt to sign at The Brooklyn Follies event. Also, a typewriter... Always on point, wry, never flashy and loud but writing more towards an inward, questioning silence. And, if you’re interested in picking up a copy, it was just named a May @bookofthemonth pick - exciting! My advice if you are interested in reading this is to stick with it. Real Americans is one of those long, sweeping generational stories, and, for me, the structure it used made it drag a bit. I actually almost DNFed it early on. But I’m glad I didn’t and you shouldn’t either! Even with my slight issue with the pace, the writing is strong throughout. And when it hooks you (and it will - it got me about 30% in), you will FLY through the rest of it because the story is unique and fascinating. Plus all the different characters’ timelines come together in a satisfying way. All in all, I wasn’t sold immediately on this but I’m happy that I pushed through because this book is something special. Definitely give it a shot! Real Americans is an immersive multi-generational story, and I think it’s best to go in blind for the best reading experience. I enjoyed all three parts of this book and couldn’t pick a favorite because they all have their place in the story. This book will definitely be one of my top reads of the year. It was powerful and insightful. The author evoked so many feelings that I, as a reader and a daughter of immigrant parents, can relate to. I loved ‘Fire Season’ for the emotions it boils, and the imagery that it contours - she is extremely talented. Her debut “Nightcrawling” was excellent and this is a continuation of what she is capable of doing. 📎”36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem” by Nam Le This collection has a diverse set of poems that journeys across landscapes both physical and emotional, weaving together threads of memory, history, and imagination. It deals with themes of identity, culture, historical trauma, racism, and belonging. I have to admit, this one to me was less approachable and more intimidating as a poetry novice. I didn’t always understand the prose and the use of symbolism and abstraction requires you to invest more time and effort to unpack the layers and get the full juice. Thank you to Knopf and PRH Audio for the free copies of an amazingly intricate, even stunning, read in Real Americans by Rachel Khong. @aaknopf @prhaudio @rrrrrrrachelkhong * paid partnership label keeps freezing my app so I can’t indicate this with the past* This one took a bit for me to get into, I suspected it would (and some of that is end of semester exhaustion for me!) but this book just works to weave together stories, characters, and the use of time, which I love in a good book. I love a time spanning story and while not a fantasy fan, this book is more fantasy adjacent, suggesting and hinting at big things and never moving into a genre or theme that took me away from the characters. A lot of this book is about luck, happenstance, and the circumstances we are born into or find ourselves in and this is a lot of what I ask my developmental science students to think about: time, social class, race/culture/ethnicity/gender, the places we live in and the relationships that influence us... It’s all in here in interesting ways and brings in ideas about how previous generations influence later ones with decisions and events... again the trajectories of time set in place before we are even born. 📕ARC Review!📕 It seems like everyone I know who has read this book has loved it, so this will be an outlying review. I had to start reading it twice before I could get into it, and though the story was fine, nothing in this book really grabbed me or made me immersed in the plot.🫤 The book starts with our mother, Katrina, going missing. Her daughter, Cleo, comes home one night to find her mother gone; only a broken glass and bloody shoe remain. Kat had been having a rough time of it lately. She and Cleo’s father, Aidan, are getting divorced, Cleo is dating a drug dealer, and the new man she has been sleeping with, Doug, has just died in a car crash. Do any of these things have to do with her disappearance?🚗 The rest of the book is about finding Katrina, and about a pharmaceutical company hiding knowledge about birth defects in one of their drugs. Unfortunately, I found most of the characters to be cliche, and I didn’t feel anything for any of them. The parts about “the past” almost felt forced into the story, even though they were the parts that connected things to the present.🔄 There’s nothing wrong with the book, or bad about the plot - it just didn’t work for me, as I found it all to be a bit boring, dry and tedious. The twists weren’t very shocking, and the ending was slightly anti-climactic. Again though, it looks like my opinion is in the minority on this one!
