šššš BOOK REVIEW šššš First thank you to Knopf and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. āļøāļøāļøāļø Synopsis: a family drama spanning 70+ years where three generations go through multiples events and changes along with many secrets. What I liked: this is literary fiction at it finest. We start at the turn of the millennium and meet Matthew and Lily. Matthew and Lily have a brief relationship while they work at the same agency. They reconnect several years later and rekindle their love. While Matthew is from a blue blooded American pharmaceutical family, Lily is from a family of immigrants that escaped maoās cultural revolution. Lily doesnāt know much about her family history and doesnāt feel connected. She travels to China with Matthew and has her child nick early but also learns more about her parents especially her mother. At the end of part 1 she discovers a family secret that changes everything. Part 2 starts with 15 year nick also feeling isolated living with Lily. I really liked this part of him discovering more about his history and family. Finally part 3 brings it all together with the grandmothers story and how their history crosses. Rachel Kongās prose throughout the book is beautiful. She provides enough information to keep you yearning for more and plenty to think about. I really thought about the themes and how she played with opposites to keep you thinking. I did get a hard copy for my shelves because I feel like I will revisit this later. This is out now and a read with Jenna pick. Please do pick up and I know it will be a good bookclub choice. #bookstareviewweek #bookreview #bookrecommendation #realamericans #readwithjenna
Happy Pub Week to Real Americans by Rachel Khong! Ā This multigenerational novel, told from the perspective of three characters, starts with Lily, a young Chinese American woman working as an intern in the late 90s. Ā Oh I loved this so much. I think it will be one of my favorites of the year. Ā Itās about luck and inheritance and grief and family and love and romance and eugenics and epigenetics and the passing of time and feeling out of place and who gets to fit in and so much more. Itās about secrets and about breaking patterns. Ā I have only read this work by Khong, but she may be one of my favorite authors. Her writing. The IMAGERY! There are moments in this book that will stick with me for a long time. Ā This book is written in three parts, and while the first was my favorite (I love a young BIPOC woman trying to figure her shit out), the other two were very strong as well. I connected least with the middle section, about Nick, but I think thatās because he knew himself so little; it was hard for us to get to know him as a result. Conversely, the character development of our two women narrators was very strong. Ā I appreciated the plot of this book and the questions it raises about epigenetics and choice and ignorance vs knowledge. About how sometimes questions about yourself can be best answered by others. I also liked the way that the author played with perspective, showing us different sides of a person depending on who did the observing. Ā To be honest, I think that I would have loved this book even if the plot had been totally different, simply because I adored the writing so much. Itās truly mesmerizing, and the book was difficult to put down. The pacing was wonderful as well. Ā This is a fantastic book. Iām expecting it to win some awards! Ā Thank you to @aaknopf for the gifted copy and this gorgeous scarf! š Ā Published 2024. Read February 2024. ā¢ Image description in comments.
āØRainy Day Book RecommendationāØ Real Americans is the kind of book I love: one that allows you to get lost for a while in the lives of others, to feel genuine care and concern for people you'll never meet, who don't actually exist but feel real and tangible while the book is open and the pages turn. Rachel Khong's newest novel is beautiful and tender and generous, and just when I thought I understood what I was reading - and maybe even thought I knew how this book would go - she twists things around, upending my expectations. This is great storytelling that explores what it means to love and care for your family, especially in an age of scientific discovery when care can be misunderstood and reckless. Pick up this beauty - seriously, it's gorgeous, I mean, check out the spine! - make some tea, and sink into a rainy day. Available at the shop from 10am-6pm // Open 24/7 at dottersbooks.com

šBook Reviewā£š ā£ Real Americans, by Rachel Khong, is a book that released this week. It is a thought-provoking story of family, fate, and the quest to be yourself.ā£ ā£ This novel is told in three parts. Each is set in a different moment in time with generations of family navigating choices and destiny. There is a woman meeting a man that changes her life forever. A son who feels isolated and alone trying to unravel his present and future. A grandmother is dying, telling a tale that sets all of this in motion. Each element infuses the other with purpose and confusion as turning left instead of right implodes dreams and shatters the tentacles of fate. Who are we and are we in control of ourselves?ā£ ā£ I loved this slow-burn character study that asks big questions. At the heart is a family dealing with much that we all deal with, Khong just elevates it with scientific wonder and philosophical debate. I knew nothing about this story going in and I think that is best. The gradual unraveling of this narrative and the choices made are a big part of its success. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, a pivot emerged. Nico is one of our protagonists, and his section of the book had me aching with understanding. I related to him in many ways. His loneliness and eagerness to understand who he is are heartbreaking and the soul of the novel. This is a page-turner that isnāt action-packed or even plot heavy. It turns the pages with beautiful writing and a sense of reading something bigger than ourselves. ā£ ā£ Kudos to Barnes & Noble and the publisher for this beautiful book club edition that has gorgeous sprayed edges, hefty paper, and a solid binding. I hope we get more adult books like this in the future. ā£ ā£ āDo you ever think about the choices you made and what life would have been like if you chose something different?ā£ ā£ I have to admit I think about that far too much.ā£ ā£ ā£ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booknerd #readers #readersofinstagram #readwithjenna #barnesandnoble #bookclub #realamericans #rachelkhong #knopf ā£

Many thanks to @NetGalley and @aaknopf for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful book by @rrrrrrrachelkhong - just picked as the May 2024 @readwithjenna m pick. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 š! This story opens on the precipice of Y2K in NYC. Lily, daughter of Chinese immigrants, is an unpaid intern at a media company and meets Matthew at a company party. Matthew is the scion of a wealthy family and offers Lily an unimaginable life. They marry and then have a son. We are next introduced to Nick, living on an island off Washington with Lily, who has kept him completely sheltered from his father and grandmother, as well as the world at large. With prodding from a friend, he eventually finds out who is father is. The next part of the story has Nick graduated and working, and he meets Mei, Lilyās mother, and she tells him her backstory in China. This is an amazing story and is going to be a fabulous book club pick because there is so much to ponder here, all wrapped up in beautifully-written prose. I loved how the different generationsā stories were told - not necessarily in order, but letting us know the characters before filling in all the backstories. The big question that this will have you thinking about is choice - are we the product of our choices, or are those made for us? It will have you feeling so lucky to be born when and where you were - but is that all down to luck? An exploration of classism and racism, as well as the concept of time. Can too much money be just a struggle as not enough? I could go on and on - so very much to think about but I loved every page! Highly recommended. Publication date 4.30.2024 - available now! #RealAmericans #RachelKhong #KnopfBooks #NetGalley #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #Books #BookRecommendations #BookLover #BookReview #BookReviewer #TBR #MustRead #Read #Partner #Fiction #LiteraryFiction #HistoricalFiction #FamilySaga
Things I donāt recommend: waiting 6 months after finishing a book to write its review. š« ā£ [gifted | Thank you, thank you @aaknopf!] ā£ ā£ REAL AMERICANS ā£ by Rachel Khongā£ Published yesterday! ā£ May @readwithjenna pick ā£ āØ 4 stars āØ ā£ ā£ This is the book I took with me to Fiji last fall. I had really hoped it would be a 5 star read for me, it didnāt quite hit that mark, but I think Iāll always love this little ARC because it will remind me of all the awesome places I read it at. Flip through some of my most picturesque reading moments with this book in hand!ā£ ā£ Okay, the reviewā¦ which isnāt going to be the best review ever, letās be honest, since I finished the book 6 months ago. But hereās the thoughts that have stuck with me.ā£ ā£ REAL AMERICANS is broken into 3 parts.ā£ ā£ Part 1: Lilyās section, the mom. I LOVED this section. I was completely sucked in and i thought this was a book I was going to fall hard for. Two people from wildly different backgrounds falling in love and getting married and starting a family. But then something starts to fracture the facade.ā£ ā£ Part 2: Nickās section, the son. We jump ahead 16 years or so. This is where the book started to lose me a little bit. I was so interested in the previous section and this new section was such an abrupt change that I struggled to care anymore. It hurt to read, knowing what I knew about the first section.ā£ ā£ Part 3: Mayās story, the immigrant grandmother. Parts of this section were flashbacks to her Chinese immigration story and I really enjoyed those from a historical fiction standpoint. But the way this section connects to the bigger story wasnāt a slam dunk for me. ā£ ā£ There is the smallest bit of magical realism to the story, which is my jam, but felt undeveloped in this story. ā£ ā£ To sum it up: I liked parts of this story more than others. The writing was great and the characters were interesting, just not an overall 5 star experience for me. This feels like a book worth reading and like one that will get quite varied reviews. Great book club pick!ā£ ā£ Also, this cover! š¤© #chefskissā£

Today Real Americans by Rachel Khong is out! [thank you @aaknopf for this beautiful book package #gifted] Iām sure you are seeing this book everywhere already, but I anticipate this being one of the yearās biggest books.ā ā It is being described as, āAn exhilarating novel of American identity that spans three generations in one family and asks: What makes us who we are? And how inevitable are our futures?ā ā ā Are you planning to pick up this beauty?ā ā Synopsis:ā Real Americans begins on the precipice of Y2K in New York City, when twenty-two-year-old Lily Chen, an unpaid intern at a slick media company, meets Matthew. Matthew is everything Lily is not: easygoing and effortlessly attractive, a native East Coaster, and, most notably, heir to a vast pharmaceutical empire. Lily couldnāt be more different: flat-broke, raised in Tampa, the only child of scientists who fled Maoās Cultural Revolution. Despite all this, Lily and Matthew fall in love.ā ā In 2021, fifteen-year-old Nick Chen has never felt like he belonged on the isolated Washington island where he lives with his single mother, Lily. He canāt shake the sense sheās hiding something. When Nick sets out to find his biological father, the journey threatens to raise more questions than it provides answers.ā ā In immersive, moving prose, Rachel Khong weaves a profound tale of class and striving, race and visibility, and family and inheritanceāa story of trust, forgiveness, and finally coming home.ā ā Exuberant and explosive, Real Americans is a social novel par excellence that asks: Are we destined, or made? And if we are made, who gets to do the making? Can our genetic past be overcome?ā
Talk about an immersive read. The premise of this book took me by surprise in the best way. We read so much about the concept of generational trauma in memoir that it was a treat to see how the author wove it into this powerful story of fiction. The notion of how our backgrounds might determine our futures, that something so strong is impressed upon our being, carried over from previous generations, leaving an indelible mark, gave it an almost dreamlike quality. I enjoyed the different POVs but the concept of time standing still is really what caught my attention. It is subtle but mighty. This book is about a multigenerational family, the immigrant experience, decision making, heartache, and much more. I think every reader could come away with something different and Iām sure if I re-read it, I would have more insight. I would love to discuss it in book club, I have so many questions. A truly beautiful book and such a fitting title. This is @rrrrrrrachelkhong novel REAL AMERICANS. {PUB DAY REVIEW} RealĀ AmericansĀ by Rachel Khong is an examination of race, culture, privilege, and the bonds within a family. Through this multigenerational tale, told from the perspectives of Lily, Nick, and May, we learn about the Chen/Maier family. Part biotech fiction, part historical fiction, and a lot of family saga,Ā RealĀ AmericansĀ sucks you in with its depth and intricacies. Khong explores the struggles of the life of an immigrant alongside the complexities of the life of a child of an immigrant and how the lessons and experiences we have as children affects the decisions we make as adults and parents. I appreciated Khong's handling of Nick's experience as a white-passing son of an AsianĀ American. I find it interesting that my own sons, who are both part Korean and part NativeĀ American, will have different experiences based on their appearances, as one is white passing while the other looks more like me, with dark hair and tan skin. Huge thanks to @hutchheinemann and the lovely @hanasparkes for this gorgeous proof copy. 'Real Americans', written by Rachel Khong, is a multi-generational Chinese-American family saga told in three parts. The novel shifts between the points of view of three family members, spanning over 70 years and three continents. In the first part, set between the late 1990s and early 2000s New York, we are introduced to a 22-year-old unpaid intern Lily Chen. Daughter of ambitious Chinese immigrants, her parents (both scientists) wanted a different and better life for her. At a work event Lily meets Matthew, her boss's charming and easygoing nephew.Ā They quickly fall in love, but it's only when they're engaged that Lily finds out he's an heir to a pharmaceutical fortune. The second part, set in 2021, is narrated by Lily's teenage son, Nick. Lily and Matthew have long separated, and Lily is now raising their son on her own, somewhere in Washington state. Nick doesn't know who his father is, Lily is very secretive about it and shuts down any questions he brings up about his father's identity. All he's told is that his father didn't want anything to do with him. With the help of his best friend, Timothy, Nick sets out to find his long-lost father by doing an ancestry DNA test they ordered online. There's a match on the ancestry platform and Nick reconnects with his estranged father. After a couple of meetings with Matthew, Nick realises that his family is full of secrets, and that his journey is only going to raise more questions instead of providing the answers he's been looking for all his life. The third (and final) part is set in 2030. It's told from the perspective of May, Lily's mother and Nick's maternal grandmother, who is in her 80s now. Nick had been told by his mother that his grandmother had died years ago, but after accidentally bumping into each other, they slowly form a special bond and she decides to reveal him her life story. 'Real Americans' is an immersive read. At its core, it's a story about what makes us who we are, and how so much of our life is totally out of our control. How much of life comes down to luck? [Part 2 in the comments.]

āØReal Americans // Rachel Khong āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø This gorgeous book gutted me. An epic tale spanning three generations, Real Americans grapples with what makes us and how much choice we have in who we become. The character work is exceptional and each time we switched perspectives I longed to go back to the last... until I fell in love with the current narrator. The story is perfectly placed and the mysteries reveal themselves at exactly the perfect time. Itās an exceptional book that Iām still thinking about, trying to work out the questions it raised. Many, many thanks to @aaknopf for the #arc!

Real Americans is part family saga and part historical fiction that follows three generations of Chinese Americans. We start off with Lily who works as an unpaid intern in NY in the late 90s and falls in love with Matthew, a wealthy heir to a pharmaceutical empire. Fast forward to 2021 to Lilyās son, Nick, who has grown up without knowing the identity of his father. Lastly, we jump to 2030 to follow Lilyās mother and Nickās grandmother, May, a geneticist who fled Maoās Cultural Revolution. This is a captivating family saga that plays with magical realism, which I thought was a brilliant addition. Khong moves between the perspectives of the three family members, weaving together the secrets they hold close and examining the betrayals and misunderstandings that led to their family being torn apart. I thought Lilyās storyline was the strongest and I couldāve read another 300 pages from her POV. Khong has a talent for creating a feeling of unease throughout the story and planting seeds for later revelations. A gripping and nuanced exploration of inheritance, race, class, identity, and forgiveness. Highly recommend! šø Thank you so much @aaknopf for my #gifted copy.

šNew Release Book Reviewš Real Americans by Rachel Khong Rating: āļøāļøāļøāļø >>>swipe for synopsis>>> Happy pub day to Real Americans! And, if youāre interested in picking up a copy, it was just named a May @bookofthemonth pick - exciting! My advice if you are interested in reading this is to stick with it. Real Americans is one of those long, sweeping generational stories, and, for me, the structure it used made it drag a bit. I actually almost DNFed it early on. But Iām glad I didnāt and you shouldnāt either! Even with my slight issue with the pace, the writing is strong throughout. And when it hooks you (and it will - it got me about 30% in), you will FLY through the rest of it because the story is unique and fascinating. Plus all the different charactersā timelines come together in a satisfying way. All in all, I wasnāt sold immediately on this but Iām happy that I pushed through because this book is something special. Definitely give it a shot! As a critic, I know readers can and do seek succor and meaning from a broad array of genres. In this @washingtonpost review, I wrote about REAL AMERICANS by Rachel Khong, who enthralled me and so many others with the wry wisdom of her sparkling debut GOODBYE, VITAMIN. In her somewhat contrived second novel, Khong interrogates who controls inheritance, whether stories, genetics, culture, ambition or money. Drawing upon near-term application of gene editing that hearkens to CRISPR, REAL AMERICANS pairs plausible (read: dystopian) science fiction with a heritable, fantastical stoppage of time that seems to mimic the extravagance of choices that Americans are posited as having in this novel. You can read the rest via the gift article linked through my bio. Within an epic sweep across three continents and 50 years, Khong affirms that it is āan artistās work to be attuned to everything,ā particularly small moments. . . #realamericans #rachelkhong #knopf #novel #washingtonpost #bookworld #review #bookstagram #bookreviewer #fiction

Book 45: Real Americans by Rachel Khong š Publication Day Review š The novel starts out with Lily Chen, an unpaid intern and daughter of Chinese immigrants who meets Matthew, the wealthy heir to a pharmaceutical company, just as the new millennium begins. But their love story doesnāt end happily and the past has much to do with it. 20 years later, Lilyās son, Nick, is on a quest to learn about the father his mother never speaks about. As he uncovers secrets from the past, Nick also grapples with the truth about his fatherās family in a way that is different from his mother. Lastly, we hear from Lilyās mother, who leaves her rural village to study in Beijing just as Maoās control in China is threatening academics. Faced with limited options, she makes choices that shape the path of her future daughter Lily and her grandson, Nick. This multigenerational family saga takes the reader from the days of the Cultural Revolution in China to the beginnings of genetic engineering in the U.S. and explores themes of family, wealth, privilege and racism through the lens of scientific advancement. I thoroughly enjoyed this thought provoking novel. Thank you to @netgalley @aaknopf @pantheonbooks @vintageanchorbooks for a complimentary digital review copy.
