💎 Book Review 💎 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks for the free audiobook @PRHAudio #PRHAudioPartner. “I like when I’m wrong. I learn something.” “I’m always surprised by how many people can’t handle the truth. They don’t want to hear it.” ‼️ same. This book is a 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. It is 48hrs and 15min long and narrated by the incredible @barbara_streisan herself. Sprinkled throughout are snippets of her best or favorite songs and I loved those bits. I went into this book thinking she was just a singer with the voice of an angel. But now I know she’s a directorial genius and a seasoned actress as well. She is also meticulous in her attention to detail. The Prince Of Tides is one of my favorite movies ever and really the only one I’ve ever seen with her in it. Wow I have been missing A LOT. A voice of “liquid diamonds” indeed. 🎶 But this is looong and I listened to it between January 25th and March 25th. It’s just too much all once. So I listened in bits and pieces over two months. Am I glad I completed it, though? Audiobook Review: City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Vivian Morris has dropped out of college. Her parents, exasperated and embarrassed, let her go stay with her Aunt Peg New York. Aunt Peg owns and theatre and it is here that Vivian has her eyes and ears well and truly opened to the world and learns all about scandals, whether it’s other peoples or ones of her own making. But naive though she is, this girl can sew and that makes her special. Through the backdrop of war, when everyone falls on hard times this is a story about Vivian’s coming of age and the people she comes to realise are the best kind of family she has ever had. I listened to this and the narrator just oozed old school Hollywood glamour in her voice. It was like listening to an A-lister’s memoir with no apologies for behaviour or consequences, it was just very matter of fact, this is how it was. Although it wasn’t terribly dramatic I was swept up in the story from the first minute to the end and I was thoroughly entertained and being fairly lengthy at over 15 hours, you get your money’s worth. ✨Book Review Alert✨ As a huge fan of Game of Thrones (we won’t talk about season 8) and House of the Dragon, I wanted to know more about the history of Westeros with House Targaryen. And boy did this book deliver. This audiobook was a whopping 26 hours. To me, it was incredibly interesting to learn about what happened before the two TV shows. Also, the book makes connections that fill in the blanks for the 8th season of GOT in relation to Daenerys’ character that were rushed. I feel like I have a really solid understanding of what is going on in the TV show and the smaller moments that wouldn’t have made sense to me if I was just watching the TV. Most of the time I was riveted by the book. It’s not written like a story though, so be careful. This is written like a history book with the narrator using “historical accounts” to give us information. I actually really liked that style of storytelling and felt it fit with the world building Martin wanted to accomplish. As always, the world building is impeccable. I did have one problem with the book. At 26 hours, I was expecting to get the whole history of the Targaryen’s up until Mad King Aerys. This is not the case. The book only goes till about 6 years after the Dance of the Dragons. I was a little disappointed to be honest. Maybe more is covered in the Game of Thrones books (and let me know if that is the case), but the story is incomplete and I thought it was a completed story. So just be aware of that. Also, because of Martin’s extreme world building, some parts can get a little repetitive and tedious. He talks a lot about military campaigns also, which I am not a fan of as personal preference. Overall, read this book if you want to know more about the Targaryens AND don’t mind spoilers. For those that love the show House of the Dragon, you haven’t seen anything yet. Get ready for Fire and Blood. That’s not an idle house motto. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Historical fiction ✅ set in 1945 and then back in 1743 Romance ✅ 🌶 Time travel ✅ Strong, independent, intelligent female lead ✅ Witchcraft ✅ Amazing accents on the audiobook ✅ English and Scottish and some French The longest audiobook ever ✅ 33 hours Do I miss the narration now that I’m finished? Yes I had heard of this book a few different times and was intrigued by the show too but wanted to at least start reading before I watched and I’m glad I did! But this is an impressively long book! I picked it up on audio because @annebogel said it was a great audiobook and she was correct! The performance was superb and I was popping my AirPods in any chance I got to keep listening. It’s about 33 hours long and about 600 pages in print. I loved the English and Scottish accents so the audio version was perfect for me. It did take a minute to get into the story and it really picked up once Claire met Jamie. I listened to a lot of it on our fall family trip and I fall asleep easily in the car while my husband drives and then also had some early mornings where I couldn’t sleep at the hotel so I’d listen for a while and would then be lulled back to sleep. This is not ideal for this long of a book because I’d wake up not knowing what in the world was going on! I listened on the drive up, at the hotel, at the hotel pool while my kids swam on night, and swipe to see me listening at the Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs while my husband played laser tag with the kids and I had a moment to myself. 😊 Then I finished it up on the drive home last night. What’s the longest audiobook you’ve ever listened to? My longest was A Promised Land by Barack Obama, but Court by Tracy Wolff is a close second haha. Court is the 4th book in the Crave series. This series follows Grace. When her parents die she is sent to live in Alaska at her Uncle’s school. When she gets there she begins to discover there are paranormal creatures in her world. Obviously that’s going to begin some problems for her. ❤️Review❤️ I love Grace, the world, and her friends. However I think I’m done with this series. This book ends the current storyline. The next two books explore other stories and I’m just not in the mood to continue. Fantasy isn’t my main genre that I like to read so I often get lost amongst all of the action and magic. I loved the first book before things got complicated. Each book is super long and it just felt like it kept getting more and more complicated as the series continued. Just not something I, as a reader, enjoy. A Slow Ruin: A Review Genre: Mystery, Domestic thriller Pub date: Feb 1, 2022 Format: audiobook Rating: 3.25/5 Okay, this book didn’t especially work for me but I want to go through the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good: Crane kept me guessing the entire time. The layers to the story unfolded in a truly artistic way, it is clear that she is a talented thriller writer. I was immediately grabbed into the story in the first couple chapters. The bad: So much cheating and wealth comparison. Like it felt unnecessary to the plot, I didn’t think it particularly added anything to the characters. It was just gross and then it all but disappeared from the storyline. The ugly: The ending was awful. It just made no sense. I know you have to suspend disbelief to read mystery novels, but this was above and beyond what I could be expected to suspend disbelief for. When the reason Vera left was given I literally laughed, I couldn’t believe that was what had been chosen. I really wanted to love this one, but I just couldn’t. 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My heart wasn’t ready to take on this book in mid-January and it’s not for the weak. Warning: There’s a lot of domestic abuse. Yet I’m so glad I trusted Kristin Hannah with my heart once again. She has a way of writing the SADDEST happy endings and to make it a story you’ll never forget, one that’ll change you. The second part is wayyyy better than the first and it gets more and more intense as you read. Plot: A 30 year old mother and her 13 year old daughter agree to follow a father’s dream to take on Alaska once he comes back home from Vietnam. The family impulsively moves out of Oregon in the middle of the school year because her dad was gifted a house. When they arrive in Alaska they are disappointed to find this house is basically a glorified shed with an outhouse. The dad was a POW and the PTSD turned him into a violent monster, a man his wife could hardly recognize. During the winter the family has to fight for survival. Thankfully in Alaska, Lenny befriends a boy named Matty at school. They bond over their shared loved of Tolkien. With Matty she feels something she never felt before as if she could have a true friend and more importantly someone who makes her feel safe. Favorite parts (spoilers): - When Lenny leaves the van to go to Walker’s house to save her mom. - When large Marge (my favorite character) sets everything straight at court. - When Matty learns to speak again. Favorite lines: - Joy reappeared as unexpected as sunlight. - Lenny would become both mother and child. I assumed it was all about the 1960s protest movement. While that is one component, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗜𝗫, a 640 page/21 hr42 min book is about so much more. ⁣ ⁣ From the moment I hit play, I was sucked in. The storyline moves across multiple time periods and is told from multiple perspectives. There is a large cast of interconnected characters who each play a small or large role in the overall story. The writing was observant in a subtle way that made me sympathetic to characters without feeling manipulated. This was my first exposure to this narrator but now I want to read more books narrated by him. Phenomenal. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗗: restoring the house after the holidays, building a puzzle, snowblowing, laundry, meal prep.

I was going to post a review today of the book I just finished (I swear!) except I didn’t like it and nobody needs to hear that. So I turned to my husband begging him to pull out a husband review, but he’s been listening to book 1 in The Wheel of Time series for the last 17 weeks and isn’t finished. Is this hyperbole? Yes. But seriously, the audio is 30 hours and he doesn’t speed it up. The whole series is 29 days. In the immortal words of Immanuel Kant, “I Kant even.” No one can prove he never said that. So I enlisted my husband to help me with the #titlesentence challenge I saw on @santi_karamchetty ‘s feed. My husband and I realized two things when embarking on this challenge. 1. Most book titles are not complete sentences. And 2. Once you start looking for sentences in a bunch of fragments, you start to forget what actually constitutes a sentence. I think these all work, but feel free to tell me what I messed up. It’s like the more you stare at the word vacuum, the more you become sure you’ve misspelled it. Because what are the two “u’s” about? Where else do we see two u’s cuddling up next to each other and why did they choose a household chore to do it? 1. I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are (seems like a sentence-like request—thank you @grandcentralpub for a copy of this gem). 2. Monday’s Not Coming (Declarative yes. Sentence? I think so.) 3. Rosalie Palmer Takes the Cake (we’ve got a subject, an action, and cake; what more do we need from a sentence?) 4. Fleishman is in Trouble (I’m pretty sure this warning is a sentence) 5. Zoe Rosenthal Is Not Lawful Good (my husband thinks there may have been a little bait and switch with the title since he’s not sure it’s actually about D&D, but I don’t think that puts its sentence classification into jeopardy) 6. Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous (this may not be the sentence Sunny wanted to hear, but I’m pretty sure it’s still a sentence) 7. You Say It First (It has a subject and a verb and a request that kind of makes me sad) 8. Are We There Yet? (A question is technically a kind of sentence. I’m sure I’m right about this.) Let’s talk ＬＯＮＧ audiobooks! Over the last few months I’ve listened to two really long nonfiction audiobooks, 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯 by Patrick Radden Keefe and 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 by Isabel Wilkerson. They came in at 18 hours and 14.5 hours respectively. I had great initial reaction to both books. I was all in! They were fantastic, fascinating, revealing histories I didn’t know and wanted to learn more about. Narration on both was strong. ⁣ ⁣ Then, after about 10 hours, my interest started to wane and the further I went the more I just wanted to be finished and move onto something new and fresh. For me, I felt like both books would have been even better had they been a little shorter. The Sackler family and their greed in creating the opioid epidemic in our country could have been more impactful for me, had it not strayed off into family tangents quite so often and definitely not as deeply. In 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦, Wilkerson thoughtfully laid out the long-standing system of caste that exists in this country, but after the fifth or sixth iteration, it began to feel repetitive.⁣ ⁣ I know I’m in a minority on these two much loved nonfiction titles and nonfiction in general can be a struggle for me. So, where did I land on both books? I liked them, but would have loved them had they been shorter. Though I learned a lot from each, my mind couldn’t stay engaged long enough to appreciate them as much as most. A big takeaway from these two LONG audiobooks, is that I’m going to limit myself to about 10 hours on listening to nonfiction. Anything more than that is more than I want to know!⁣ ⁣ Does anyone else have problems with LONG audiobooks? Do you listen to audiobooks? . I go through audiobook phases. I absolutely devoured the audio of the Scorpio Races (still dead over that book) earlier this year, and I've since listened to a couple others but...now I'm stuck in the middle of a @brandsanderson saga and the light at the end of the tunnel is distant indeed. 😳😅 . Sanderson is a master at writing, but it always takes me a million years to read his books because I loose steam/get into a different mood when I'm only part way through. It took me eleven months to read Oathbringer for this very reason. . I started Warbreaker in July and am very thankful that a) my library does virtual audiobook loans and b) my library doesn't fine people for not 'returning' e-audios on time, because this one is well overdue. 😅 . It's so amazing though! Definitely another great masterpiece from the Sanderson. I just...need to get through it somehow. I'll get there one day. Maybe it'll take me less than eleven months. 🤞🏻😆
