Six Miles from Home by Stephen R. Morrin. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Themes: Historical, Aviation, Air Disaster. Reading Challenge: Read a book that is linked to your home town. ✔️ On 4 June 1967, British Midland Flight 542 crashed near the centre of Stockport, Cheshire, England. Of the 84 people on board, 72 were killed. It is one of the worst accidents in British aviation history, and for some reason it is one that not many are aware of . The Review: Six miles from home tells the true event of a tragedy that hit a little close to home, because in fact this plane crashed very close to home. Stockport is my home town. It is true that these events happened long before I was born, but to read about these events taking place on my doorstep is truly chilling, and I cannot begin to imagine the horror of the situation not only for those who survived, but for the emergency services who had to deal with an unenviable, and heartbreaking situation. The Summary: The dialogue is clunky in places, and some pieces of information are repeated, but as this book includes eyewitness accounts from different times that is to be expected. This is a very interesting and alarming book, but even more than that it is an important piece of history, and I'm grateful for Stephen R. Morrin, and all the hard work, and dedication he put into the research of this disturbing event. Maybe you've never heard of Stockport, maybe you've never even been to the UK. Most of you won't even read this book or even give it a second thought, but if just one of you googles the Stockport air disaster then that will do me just fine. This review is dedicated to the memory of the 72 passengers who passed away in tragic circumstances on June 4th, 1967. A U.S. Air Force F-16 jet crashed near White Sands National Park in New Mexico, authorities said. The U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed about 11:50 a.m. Tuesday near White Sands National Park west of Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, officials with the 49th Wing at Holloman Air Force Base said. The pilot, whose name has not been released, successfully ejected from the jet. The pilot was the only person in the jet when it crashed, officials said. The pilot was taken to a hospital by ambulance for medical care, officials said. The cause of the crash is under investigation, officials said. All non-emergency personnel are urged to "avoid the area to prevent possible exposure to hazardous chemicals onboard the aircraft," officials said. Emergency response teams responded to the scene using the entrance road into White Sands National Park. Dakota 576 Plane Crash Site in Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 🥾 the trail A 4-kilometre out-and-back trail that takes you to the plane crash site of Dakota 576. The trail is a bit overgrown and rather rough with mud year-round and some rope sections, so be sure to bring gloves. ✈️ plane crash history On April 19, 1944 several crews were flying on a cross country navigation mission. They were to leave from Pat Bay, do several legs and an approach at Port Hardy, and then return to Pat Bay. In spite of the squalls and strong winds most of the crews just made it back to Pat Bay but the crew of Dak 576 figured they didn’t have enough fuel so they elected to land at Port Hardy. Due to the poor weather Pilot Officer JM Talbot missed the first approach and went around for another try. He was on the centre line about five miles from touch down when he ran out of fuel and crash landed in some scrub trees. Unfortunately, the nose of the aircraft hit a large bolder and killed the pilot and the navigator, Pilot Officer TS Wardlow. Sgt TR Moss, the Wireless Air Gunner survived and was found by a search party several hours later dazed but not injured. Some friends and I visiting a 1995 plane crash in Monongahela National Forest. This is one of my favorite forests on the Planet for so many reasons. The Mossy pine biome at about 4000 ft is just one of them. I will make another post with details of the crash, but it I will say it was quite well preserved. Wine writer Thomas Stockley, a columnist for The Seattle Times, and his wife, Peggy, were killed on Alaska Airlines Flight 261 when it crashed off the coast of California. The crash killed all 88 on board including two pilots, three flight attendants, and 83 passengers. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board concluded inadequate maintenance led to excessive wear and eventual failure of the airplane’s pitch control. Flight 261 plunged into a near-vertical nosedive, inverted, then fell upside-down towards the Pacific Ocean. ~ R E V I E W ~ Ga jij vaak op vliegvakantie? Toen we in februari 'Je bent prachtig' lazen met de leesclub van @ilonaslevenbijls waren we met een aantal zo enthousiast dat we ook graag 'Lieve Edward' wilden lezen. We maakten een groepje, er sloten nog wat nieuwe lezers aan en vanavond bespreken we het laatste deel. Ik kijk er, ondanks het heftige onderwerp naar uit! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hoe doe je recht aan de gevoelens van een 12-jarige jongen die alles verliest nadat hij als enige een vliegtuigramp overleeft? Nadat Napolitano hoorde over Ruben die als enige de vliegtuigramp bij Tripoli overleefde, bleef de vraag 'hoe ga je verder?' door haar hoofd spoken. In de daaropvolgende jaren bleef ze erover nadenken en dat leidde tot deze roman. Het is een fictieverhaal met een waargebeurde aanzet. In deze roman volgen we Eddie/Edward. Wanneer hij wakker wordt in het ziekenhuis en blijkt dat hij als enige de ramp overleefd heeft, is hij fysiek en mentaal gebroken. Hij komt bij zijn oom en tante terecht, die heel erg hun best doen, maar ook hun eigen verhaal hebben en het allemaal ook niet weten. Naast hen wonen Besa en haar dochter Shay en de aanwezigheid van dit leeftijdsgenootje blijkt zijn redding. Op levensechte wijze geeft Napolitano leven aan hun interactie, de totale onwetendheid van de volwassenen en het levensgrote schuldgevoel waar Edward mee worstelt. Je leest afwisselend scènes uit zijn leven na en scènes van de dag van de crash; op de luchthaven en in het vliegtuig. Dit tweede perspectief is goed geschreven, maar vond ik heel pittig om te lezen. Ik had de neiging om ze over te slaan; de andere passagiers niet te leren kennen. Net als Edward alle gedachten aan het vliegtuig probeerde weg te stoppen, wilde ik er niet naar kijken in de hoop dat hen niets gebeurt. Het boek kruipt hierdoor echt onder je huid en ik raad je aan het niet te lezen vlak voordat je zelf gaat vliegen. Talig gezien vond ik het een meer recht toe rechtaan boek dan 'Je bent prachtig', maar uiteraard weet Napolitano gevoel nu ook meermaals heel raak te vangen. Drowning // T.J. Newman ✈️✈️✈️✈️/5 “Will Kent opened his eyes just in time to see the engine explode.” Wow. Never has a book hooked me in the first sentence like this one. I tore through this one. A plane crashes into the sea and we follow the race to save as many passengers as possible. The book takes place over a couple hours but man, they really pack it in. I docked one star due to all the technical stuff I kinda skimmed through, but I’m sure a lot of people really liked it. I definitely plan on picking up Newman’s other book and you can count on me for reading any of her future work. I’d pick this one up if you like thrillers, action and fast paced books. “There is no greater love than that which gives one’s life for one’s friends.” Society of the Snow is a Spanish survival drama detailing the true story of a Christian Uruguayan Rugby Team (with some familia) that crashed in the Andes in 1972 while flying to Chile. In one of the harshest environments one can find themselves in, the survivors face the blistering cold and barren landscape atop a snowy mountain as the clock runs against them. A tale of survival in the extremes of nature, with harrowing circumstances causing desperate measures. Amidst that, brotherhood, ingenuity and man's indomitable spirit reign supreme. The narrative is based on the accounts of the survivors from which the book was written and this film is adapted; there are gut-wrenching twists. Granted, if you're privy to the history, you might not be caught off guard but since I went in blind, I was shocked and it undoubtedly enhanced the viewing experience. An overall awesome watch. At times, harrowing; else, triumphant. It tears you down and builds you up again as the powerful survival story of the Christian Uruguayan Rugby Team shows you the strength of people, warts and all. With a large cast delivering great performances in a solid audiovisual package, this survival drama tale is a must-watch. And if I were to rate it, I’d give it an 8.5/10. P.S. I would also recommend two other powerful based-on-true-story films that I consider necessary viewing: The Impossible (2012): it’s about a family on vacation in Thailand when they get caught up in the devastating 2004 Asian Tsunami. Starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland. Directed by J.A. Bayona. Only the Brave (2017): it’s about the Granite Mountain Hotshots and their firefighting journey from obtaining certification to risking it all for the safety of people. Starring Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, and Jennifer Connelly. El 3 de junio de 2012, el vuelo 0992 de Dana Air estaba realizando un vuelo entre Abuya y Lagos, ambas en Nigeria, cuando el avión alcanzó su altitud crucero los pilotos se dieron cuenta que el motor N°1 (izquierdo) había fallado, pero en ves de desviarse a otro aeropuerto o volver a Abuya el capitán decidió continuar el vuelo, en el descenso a Lagos el motor N°2 (derecho) también fallo, los pilotos intentaron reiniciar ambos motores desesperadamente pero ninguno funcionaba, el avión comenzó a caer, perdiendo velocidad y altura drásticamente, finalmente el avión terminó estrellándose contra varios edificios del barrio Iju, en Lagos, muriendo todas las 153 personas a bordo y 6 en tierra. On December 9, 2012, a Learjet carrying Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera suddenly went down near Iturbide, Mexico — plunging almost vertically and reaching speeds of over 600 miles per hour before it crashed into the ground below. All seven people on board, including Rivera, four of her employees, and the two pilots, were all killed on impact. Shockingly, it was later found that neither of the plane's pilots should have been allowed to fly in the first place. One pilot, age 78, was too old to be flying a Learjet according to Mexican regulations. The other pilot, who was just 21, had not been authorized to fly outside of the United States even though the entire flight was supposed to take place in Mexico. Furthermore, the plane itself was over 40 years old and had been involved in at least one other accident before its doomed final flight. Perhaps most chilling of all, the cause of the crash has never been fully explained to this day. Because both flight recorders were destroyed in the explosion, all that the authorities have been able to determine is that the plane crashed due to "loss of control of the aircraft for undetermined reasons." The Tenerife Disaster. The Tenerife disaster occurred on the 27th March 1977 when two Boeing 747's collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport on the Spanish Island of Tenerife. The disaster occurred when a KLM plane began its takeoff in dense fog that had surrounded the runway where a pan am flight was still taxiing. The impact and resulting fire left 583 people dead and to this day remains the deadliest aviation disaster in history. The subsequent investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that the primary cause of the accident was the KLM captain's decision to take off in the mistaken belief that a takeoff clearance from air traffic control (ATC) had been issued.Dutch investigators placed a greater emphasis on a mutual misunderstanding in radio communications between the KLM crew and ATC, but ultimately KLM admitted that their crew was responsible for the accident and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims.The disaster had a lasting influence on the industry, highlighting in particular the vital importance of using standardized phraseology in radio communications. Cockpit procedures were also reviewed, contributing to the establishment of crew resource management as a fundamental part of airline pilots' training] The captain is no longer considered infallible, and combined crew input is encouraged during aircraft operations.
