Another exciting updates from Roots and Shoots Nepal! We are thrilled to announce that we have officially kicked off our Roots and Shoots activities for 2081 (2024/25) with an inspiring induction session at Peace Point Academy, Imadol, Latitpur, Nepal. This marks our first program of the year and the beginning of many more wonderful initiatives in the schools of Kathmandu Valley. The session was carried out by Roots and Shoots Coordinator of Nepal, where she shared all about Roots and Shoots Club, the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal, and the incredible work of Dr.Jane Goodall. She also explained how Club operates, our past achievements, and our plans for the future. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the students and the interest of their parents, who had many questions about the benefits of joining the club and how it would impact their children's academics. Stop the Exploitation of Caged Birds! At the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal, we stand for the rights and welfare of all living beings, including our feathered friends. It's disheartening to see the continued exploitation of birds, particularly parrots, being sold in cages across Nepal. Despite efforts to stop the trade and manage this issue, there are still sellers peddling these beautiful creatures for profit, denying them their basic right to freedom. Keeping birds in cage not only deprives them of natural habitat but also robs them of the ability to express their natural behaviors. As advocates for animal welfare, we urge everyone to reconsider supporting this unethical trade. Every bird deserves to soar freely in the sky, not confined to a life of captivity for human entertainment or profit. Birds with wings are meant to use their glorious feathers to explore the whole wide sky and fly. They shouldn't be held captive in a cage and limit their expression of existence. According to the Law of Nepal, birds are not allowed to be kept in a cage or confined in a particular area. They have the right of freedom and serious actions as well as penalties would be fined to the person who are found selling as well as consuming such birds. The lack of adequate resources and technical expertise inhibits widespread adoption, leading to dependence on traditional fuels like firewood and kerosene. This reliance not only contributes to deforestation but also poses health risks from indoor air pollution. Moreover, alternative energy solutions like solar power are gaining popularity, further reducing the demand for biogas. Despite these obstacles, biogas production remains integral to Nepal's sustainable development efforts. Its utilization helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing organic waste disposal issues. Additionally, biogas systems provide economic opportunities through the sale of surplus energy and organic fertilizers, thereby enhancing rural livelihoods. However, the declining trend in biogas usage underscores the need for comprehensive policies and incentives to incentivize its adoption. Without proper interventions, the country risks exacerbating climate change and jeopardizing its environmental and economic sustainability in the long run. The Travelling Theatre program, a collaborative effort between The Jane Goodall Institute Nepal (JGIN), Children Youth First (CYF): Life Vision Academy, qnd Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), aimed to raise awareness about vulture conservation through captivating theatrical performances. Led by Haushala Thapa, the students of CYF:Life Vision Academy mesmerized audiences with their talent and dedication, spreading the message of vulture conservation far and wide. Our first ever University program!!! . . Green Club at Nepal Law Campus was formed by the B.A.LL.B. students of all semester on 5th June 2023. It was initiated with the vision of protecting promoting and increasing effective participation of law students in environmental issues. Advocate Rupa Basnet, professor of Environmental law at the college linked the green club members to Roots and shoots team of JGIN. After which, one committee was formed by merging Green Club and Roots and Shoots,which is now working as Roots and Shoots club at the university. As a Roots and Shoots club activity, first-ever university presentation was held among club members under the guidance of roots and shoots coordinator, Upama Dhakal. The presentation was about a research on a major issue, “Effectiveness on Food Sovereignty In Nepal”, which was presented by Ms. Bhawana Adhikari, last semester Environmental Law student of Nepal law campus. Student’s initiative and enthusiasm towards the research was praiseworthy, which was a great learning experience for us as well. . . A step towards promoting Animal welfare. Explore with us as we guide you through an explorative visit to the Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary. . . . Roots and shoots once again as a part of the club activities indulged the children of Swosteshree Gurukul in an exhilarating journey to the sanctuary. As children got to see, learn and even touch the rescued animals on their own, we can how the practicality of this activity bought in them a sense of connection to those animals. The major highlight of the visit was how children loved the animals there, particularly “Samir”. Samir was one of the donkeys in the sanctuary that was very friendly. He let students go close to him and also followed them throughout the visit. Their insights on animal behaviour, needs, rights, and welfare grew on another level so as to generate a positive will towards rescue activities. Hee-haw” hee-haw” hee-haw” Rootsandshoots as a part of the club activities carried out a site visit to Animal Nepal Equine Sanctuary (Donkey Sanctuary) located in Dukuchapp, Lalitpur. As the students learned about the lives of these animals(donkeys,mules,hinnies,dogs,bulls,turkeys and other rescued animals) their diet and the devoted caretakers ensuring rescue and holistic approaches to their well-being, they were inspired to do so as well. This session inspired in students, the sense of contribution to animal welfare and enlightened them on the animal rescue operations.
