On April 29, 1986, a fire broke out at the Los Angeles Central Library, causing extensive damage to the building and its collections. The fire, determined to be arson, destroyed or damaged about 400,000 books and other materials. The fire went on for over seven hours, leaving the library closed for several years. It eventually reopened in 1993 after undergoing extensive restoration. The library was used as a filming location for Secret in Their Eyes. The outside of the library was used to portray the mosque entrance that the LA District Attorney’s office is watching for terrorist activity. On November 25, 1924, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted trademark registration for the Kleenex brand. Kleenex is a known for its tissues, often used for things like blowing your nose or general hygiene purposes. Kleenex tissues are often used when people cry to wipe away tears. Now I’m not much of a cryer when I watch movies, but there are some pretty sad scenes in Julia’s movies that will make you reach for a Kleenex tissue. Just think of the scene at the police station in Ben is Back, (Julia is brilliant in that), the funeral scene in Steel Magnolias, the ferry in My Best Friend’s Wedding, or the scene in Stepmom when Julia meets Susan Sarandon at the restaurant (‘You have their future’). But the one that touches me the most is the scene in Secret in Their Eyes, when Julia’s character’s murdered daughter is found. Can you imagine? Having two daughters myself, I don’t even want to…. But Julia portrays the horror of a such a situation so well, the panic, desperation, dismay, the grief. It’s just amazing… And just imagine being behind the camera and watching your wife do that, I really wonder how Danny felt during that shot. Can you please tell us @modermoder ? Secret in Their Eyes (Billy Ray, 2015) Nothing better than to take a delicate blend of crime procedural, political commentary, and melancholic romance and fail at all three eh? This American remake of the modern Argentine classic of the same name boils down all of its source materials elements into stodgy pablum, less prestige drama and more cheap paperback fiction. Granted it takes inspired approach of moving the action to the immediate aftermath of 9/11 in attempted to dissect America’s societal rot bought about via its War on Terror. But the fact is that director Billy Ray fails to really bring you in to the interior lives of its main characters, and that’s lethal for a film focused on unexplored feelings of love and the void left by unspeakable trauma. Sure it has a pretty glittery ensemble who all do about fine, but they sadly feel awfully inert compared to the palpable tension bought by the likes of Ricardo Darin and Soledad Villamil. Nicole Kidman Month, Day 19: Secret In Their Eyes (2015) This movie takes a lot of flack because of it’s predecessor, which is a little Argentinian film from 2009. I’ve never seen the first film, (although it’s on my watchlist) so I can’t make comparisons, but I do agree that most foreign films are superior to the American remakes. That said, I am rating this film based on its merit as a stand alone story. I think that this is quite good. To start with it has a really good cast. Our girl Nicole is joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, Alfred Molina, and Dean Norris. This is a crime drama that goes back and forth between three timelines. That part can get a bit confusing, but it’s well worth the watch. When a vicious murder hits too close to home those involved are determined to find the killer. Find him, they do, only to be told that he is untouchable because of his usefulness to another investigation. 13 years later the investigation is back again (though not officially) do to the obsessive searching for the killer by the original FBI agent. There are several twists and turns that lead to a dark conclusion that left me both shocked and satisfied. Kidman does great in her role, as does Ejiofor, and I enjoy the chemistry between them. However, in my opinion, Julia Roberts totally owns this film, and turns in one of her most heart wrenching performances. March 23 is World Elevator Day, celebrating the fact that on this day in 1857, Elisha Otis installed the first modern elevator. It was installed in a five story department store in New York City. The elevator was powered by a steam engine, ran at 0.2 meters (8 inches) per second and featured a system that prevented the cab from falling if the cable broke. Now when you think of elevators and Julia, of course you immediately think of Vivian Ward’s ‘first time in an elevator’ in Pretty Woman. But there are other movies that feature an elevator-scene as well. Julia almost gets crushed by a falling elevator in I love trouble. I guess that one wasn’t an @otiselevatorco elevator 😉 There are the heartbreaking elevator scenes in Secret in their eyes, after Julia’s character is confronted with her daughter’s killer. But my favorite elevator scene would have to be the scene between Julianne and Kimmy in My best friend’s wedding, where we see their first ‘confrontation’ about Michael. On March 7, 2010, ‘El secreto de sus ojos’ won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. In the movie, judiciaries Benjamín Espósito and Irene Hastings investigate a rape and murder in 1970s Argentina. It grossed over $34 million worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing Argentian film ever. In 2015, the movie was remade as Secret in their eyes. The director of the original film, Juan José Campanella, worked as an executive producer on this remake, which features Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dean Norris, Alfred Molina and of course Julia. She was joined on set by Danny, who was the Director of Photography on the movie. About Danny being there during filming, she said: "We've done a number of things together, and it's always kind of nerve wracking for me because he's my husband and I want him to think I'm awesome. But this was a collaboration where I realized that if he hadn't been there I don't think I could have fashioned together the performance that I wanted to." - 065 《沈默的雙眼》 - 電影一開始發現無名女屍時，就被Chiwetel Ejiofor的驚訝與克制觸動，接著馬上被Julia Roberts的瞬間情緒轉換與肢體細節震懾到哭出來。相較另外兩位主角，過程中Nicole Kidman沒什麼特別的表現，就是位漂亮的檢察官。正覺得找她來演這也太浪費了吧，就被她刺激套話嫌疑犯的那段驚豔到，將聰明、觀察力細微、反應極快的人格特質拉出來。雖然是改編重拍，但配合美國911的時空背景，劇情推進和伏筆也都合理且清晰。淡淡的劇情、深深的情緒，加上三位主角強大氣場，很容易跟著角色進入劇中。但是13年前後的時間序交錯，只能從男主的幾根白頭髮和檢察官的長短短髮分辨。觀看過程我常常會站錯時間點，導致劇情理解不順暢。但不影響對於結局的震驚與感慨。整部電影的情感，都像在水下。表面看似只有淺淺漣漪，藏著深深烈烈的震動。 - #剛剛坐著兩小時 #沈默的雙眼 #SecretInTheirEyes

Secret In Their Eyes (2015) follows a team of investigators who are torn apart after one of their Daughter’s is brutally murdered. This is a remake of the Argentinian version and with a cast including Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts you would expect a sharp Thriller. Unfortunately there are little thrills and with the constant flashbacks it’s difficult to invest in the narrative. The pace is slow and the 3 leads have little chemistry together. Roberts portrays a grieving Mother well and Ejiofor is committed to his performance. The always reliable Kidman seems bored, lacking the confidence and sass needed for a District Attorney portrayal. There are a couple of decent scenes, including the murder reveal, and the ending is fairly satisfying! September 12 is National Police Woman Day in the US. This day acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of female police officers who enforce law and order around the country. The first policewoman in the United States was most likely Marie Owens. She was hired by the Chicago Police Department in 1891 and soon became an advocate to have police departments hire women as officers. This didn’t really happen until 1972, when Congress passed an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited state and local agencies from job discrimination based on gender. Police departments were then required to hire women for jobs on an equal basis with men. In Secret in Their Eyes, Julia plays Jessica Cobb, an investigator for the Los Angeles district attorney's office, who is investigating a possible terrorist location. A late discovery on my end. I don't quite remember where I picked this up... I wanna say it was strictly so I could see it before Billy Ray's American remake... but, uh... wow. What a picture. Reaching peak popularity after its upset at the Oscars, where ot took home the foreign language award over favorites like A PROPHET and THE WHITE RIBBON, I'll be damned if it didn't deserve it. This film is phenomenal. Aside from being a compelling and unexpectedly harrowing crime thriller, this movie centers on several key relationships between the primary investigator of a murder case and those surrounding him over the course of multiple decades. I was very taken with the characters' victories and failures. Their journeys are unpleasant, but it makes for a meal of a movie.
