The book follows William a boy who is forced to drop out of school at 14 and how he teaches himself to produce electricity with scrap bits of metal discarded junk and make a difference to his family and village. Las descripciones de la hambruna son desgarradoras y abren los ojos sobre lo afortunados que somos —aunque suene a cliché— por «nuestro pan de cada día». Piensas en el chocolate que te comiste por antojo esta semana y el café caliente de cada mañana que para otros no son más que ciencia ficción: tan reales como un unicornio. El sufrimiento es inimaginable. Morir de hambre, tres palabras que apuñalan el alma. ¿Por qué algunos tienen tanto, mientras que a otros les falta todo? Superado el periodo de hambruna, William comienza la secundaria, tiene inquietudes y muchas ganas de aprender. Pero la enseñanza media hay que pagarla y sus padres no cuentan con los recursos para que él estudie. Problema tras problema… la vida parece no darle tregua (amén, Benedetti). Pero a pesar de que las cosas se veían más negras que cubo de oso 😝, William buscó el modo de salir del hoyo en el que se encontraba y prepararse un refresco con los limones que le lanzaba la vida. Por eso esta historia resulta de una rareza extraordinaria. William decide hacer algo: va a la biblioteca —benditos libros—, aprende, investiga y se propone construir un molino de viento. En su villa no existe ni la electricidad, ni el agua potable. El resto lo dejaremos para ser descubierto en la lectura, o en la película que está disponible en Netflix (no la he visto así es que no puedo garantizar que sea buena). Eso sí, antes de cerrar este boliche, las cosas como son: no es una gran obra literaria, su valor está en la historia, que es tan impresionante y conmovedora que se quedará grabada en la memoria de quien decida leerla.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer This book is the memoir of William Kamkwamba, an African young man who has successfully pursued his dream to obtain a higher education and dedicated himself to developing his home country, Malawi 🇲🇼. I suppose this book is a must-read, particularly for the youths who are currently pursuing their goals. If you like Educated by Tara Westover, I think you might like this book as well, although it is a totally different story. William was a student who dropped out of school because he could not afford the tuition fee. He lived in Wimbe, Malawi. At that time, the majority of people there believed in the power of magic more than modern science. In addition, they lack education, don't have access to electricity, and sometimes experience drought, even starvation. Furthermore, it is hard to find the opportunity since government funds are often corrupted. Studying is William's hobby, so he frequently visited the library to read books he loved. It was there that he first saw a windmill. He later made the decision to construct one, his aim is to supply his house with water and electricity. He made and ran the windmill mostly with used materials. Instead, his neighbors made fun of him, believing that he was insane and that the equipment possessed magical abilities. One day, a scientist discovered William's electric wind and was astounded by his talent. His windmill then became well-known even outside of his neighborhood. He supported William to obtain a scholarship to continue his studies. William earned his undergraduate degree in the US. He returned to his village in Malawi to assist African children in pursuing their education. The famine killed many people, pretty much caused by changes in weather patterns and changes in agriculture policy and administration. 2. Curiosity and Education. William's family uphold education despite not being able to pay the fee. Williams's curiosity and persistence lead him to success. He did not stop at the windmill only, he tried building the circuit breaker and transformer too. His attempt to build biogas for his mother was witty yet effortful. 3. The library and the librarian. William decided to go to the library as a way to catch up on his studies (where he found books that inspired his invention). The librarian was a nice person in helping William to get books and translate words. 4. Parents' support. William's father is responsible for his family. His mother is a strong lady. His father's acceptance of Science and storytelling has nurtured a curious child. 5. Good friends. Gilbert and Geoffrey are very supportive friends, always helping William while others start to call him a madman. I notice their conversations are well behaved too. 6. William is not only an inventor in his village, but he is also an AIDS activist in spreading awareness of HIV. 7. Embracing science instead of magic. William trusted science knowledge although superstitions were very strong throughout the country. Once the villagers call his tower a witch tower to summon all witches. 8. Opportunity. 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 "A windmill meant more than just power, it was freedom." 📖: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope ✍️: William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer 🎧: Chike Johnson My friend gave me this book several years ago, and when I found it available on audiobook, I knew it was time to give it a go. I will admit that this started slow for me. And it confused me a bit, because I was expecting the entire book to be about this wind harnessing 😂. So that was a me problem. As I listened and listened and listened to his father's story and how his parents met, I was very confused and even double-checked that I was listening to the right book 😂. But the book did pick up, and it really gave me a lot to think about. Most amazing to me was how the events in this book didn't happen centuries ago, but rather a couple decades ago. William lived in Malawi, and he grew up without indoor plumbing or electricity. With no irrigation systems in place, a drought meant devastation for his entire village. His family was too poor to send him to secondary school, but that didn't stop him from using the library and learning. He eventually designed and built a windmill out of scrap parts, and he was able to bring electricity into his home. Eventually, he also was able to create a water pump so his family never would lose all their crops again. While there were some technical parts about the windmill building that got a little dull, overall I was just blown away by the determination of this young man. This book also made me think of a book I reviewed in 2021 called The Bright Continent. I'll share it in my stories. It was so sad to read about the hardships the Malawians faced amid drought and governmental corruption. But oh, to see the ingenuity that came from it... that's just amazing to me. Sometimes I think we Americans rob ourselves because we love the easy life (and I'm definitely one who does, so no judgement!) William Kamkwamba was born in Malawi, a country where magic ruled and modern science was mystery. It was also a land withered by drought and hunger, and a place where hope and opportunity were hard to find. But William had read about windmills in a book called Using Energy, and he dreamed of building one that would bring electricity and water to his village and change his life and the lives of those around him. His neighbors may have mocked him and called him misala—crazy—but William was determined to show them what a little grit and ingenuity could do. Enchanted by the workings of electricity as a boy, William had a goal to study science in Malawi's top boarding schools. But in 2002, his country was stricken with a famine that left his family's farm devastated and his parents destitute. Unable to pay the eighty-dollar-a-year tuition for his education, William was forced to drop out and help his family forage for food as thousands across the country starved and died. Yet William refused to let go of his dreams. With nothing more than a fistful of cornmeal in his stomach, a small pile of once-forgotten science textbooks, and an armory of curiosity and determination, he embarked on a daring plan to bring his family a set of luxuries that only two percent of Malawians could afford and what the West considers a necessity—electricity and running water. Using scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves, William forged a crude yet operable windmill, an unlikely contraption and small miracle that eventually powered four lights, complete with homemade switches and a circuit breaker made from nails and wire. Yani onu ben öldürmüştüm’’ Hayvanda olsa sevdiğinin onu terk etmesi yaşama isteğini kaybettiriyor. Ben kitabı sevdim. Akıcı bir anlatım ile insanı kendine okumaya çekiyor. Anlatımda bozukluklar hissetmedim. Çeviri kitaplarının çoğunda anlatım bozuklukları oluyor ama bu kitapta çeviriden kaynaklı bir sorun yoktu bence. Asla pes etmememizi, hedefimiz, hayallerimizin peşinde koşmamızı öğütleyen bu kitaba şan verin bence. RÜZGARI DİZGİNLEYEN ÇOCUK William; baş karakterimiz Afrika’da yaşıyor. Bildiğiniz gibi Afrika fakir bir ülke. Eğitim, sağlık çok fazla iyi değil. Orada yaşayan insanlar çocuklar, yaşlılar hasta olmamaya çalışıyorlar. Çünkü ne doktor ne de ilaç var. William tek erkek çocuk, 6 tane kız kardeşi var. Kızların ilgilendikleri alanlar farklı olduğu için William çok sıkılıyor. William’ın ailesi en çokta büyükbabası büyüye inanıyorlar. William inanmıyor yalnız korkuyor. Ailesi Mısır ekip satıyorlar. Yalnızca tek gelir kaynakları bu. William diğer erkek kuzenleriyle oyuncaklarını kendi elleriyle yapıyorlar. Futbolu çok seviyor ama gerçek bir futbol topu bile yok😏😞 William kendine çok inanmıştı. Ve babası da oğluna inanmıştı. William kendine ait bir oda buldu ve gece gündüz çalıştı. Yer değirmeni yapmak istiyordu. Şehirdekiler gibi rahat yaşamak istiyordu. Eğer William başaramazsa başka kimse yoktu. Başaracaktı. William’a çoğu kişi deli dedi ama aldırmadı. Hep daha çok çalıştı. Gece herkes uyurken o kitap okuyordu. Yel Değirmenini okuduğu fizik kitabı sayesinde başarmıştı. 18 yaşına geldiğinde ise onu DÜNYA tanıyordu. Yel değirmeni; müzik ve haberleri dinlemek, telefon şarj etmek için herkes kullanıyordu. En çokta William’ın ailesi gurur duyuyordu. William’ın haberini yapmak için gazeteciler birbirine giriyorlardı. Gerçekten çok ama çok beğendiğim bir kitap oldu 2 günde bitirdim. Elimden bırakamayacağım kadar güzeldi. ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer and illustrated with charmingly abstract chapter headings by Anna Hymas (@anna_hymas) has so many down-to-earth, yet beautiful passages to quote that I had a hard time choosing. However, since we are fast approaching Halloween, this one seemed appropriate: “Not having electricity meant that I couldn’t do anything at night. I couldn’t read or finish my radio repairs. I couldn’t do my homework or study for school. No watching television. It also meant that when I walked outside to the toilet, I couldn’t see the big spiders or roaches that liked to play in the latrine at night. I only felt them crunch under my bare feet.” Set in Malawi over several years and later taking the reader to other places in the world, not only does this story transport the reader into a world devoid of electricity, it also delves deeply into the experience of famine, which is what most impressed me (this book is recommended for 10 and up and even as a read-aloud I think its best for that age group…in my opinion). Hard to read at times, but eye-opening and oh so rewarding, William’s journey will inspire. Kids who love inventing things and pulling apart machines etc. to see how they work will especially enjoy this book! Anna Hymas’ black and white chapter headings are full of life and capture the spirit of Malawi..I really enjoyed them! I hope you have a lovely Monday! It's just sooo amazing how a boy, born in a place that only allows him to have so little, can have such a big dream and can act on it despite all the challenges that he faced. That's why if you are born in a place that gives you a lot of resources, and yet your only concern is how to get yourself entertained in the next hour or so, shame on you! Buku ini is a MUST READ buat semua anak sekolah usia SD besar - SMA. (Buku ini memang adalah bacaan tugas sekolah anakku untuk subject literature). Pastinya banyak anak-anak yang menganggap ada listrik itu biasa, ada running water itu biasa, ada makanan di atas meja makan itu biasa, ada genteng di atas kepala kita itu biasa, sebiasa adanya udara dan sinar matahari. (Padahal sekarang udara bersih aja udah nggak biasa lagi sih 😅). Dan mereka juga bahkan menuntut wifi harus ada terus 😅.
