Trad season has begun! I haven't done much summer Trad for the last 2 years, my knee being the biggest obstacle to navigate, but yesterday it felt weird but good! Another day of research. Today, I headed south to revisit the Coigach peninsula. I was loath to leave the Clachtoll campsite as the weather from sunrise has been wall to wall sunshine. Stac Pollaidh was calling. Spring sunshine, dotted lochans, the solid mass of rock and history. So much to take in and distill. I'm entranced by the shape of these Assynt hills. Day 4 was pretty mega! 😎☀️🏔️ With the weather set to be the best day of the trip (no winds, sunshine, warmth) we decided to make the trip up to Ullapool to do the loop around Stac Pollaidh, it’s one we’ve driven to a few times just to see but haven’t actually left the van for so this time we got out and hiked! It was a pretty special one for me because the big ol mountain to the left in the first photo also in photo 5 on its own, is Suilven, it’s one hike I’ve always dreamt of doing and have had a bit of a fascination with for years. On our first trip to Scotland in early 2019 we attempted it with plans to camp up there but the weather was dreadful and we actually only made it to the Falls of Kirkaig before turning back around and finding a campsite. Unfortunately it’s a 13ish mile hike there and back and so it’s not something I think we’ll be able to do with Pips now, I’m not totally letting the dream go as we could do it as a camp like originally planned and it wouldn’t be too bad for her but obviously we have to consider her health at the time and it’s not something I’ll ever be risking so just being able to actually see Suilven from this viewpoint filled that cup of being there with Pippa and seeing it in the background of our hike. Our friend had actually hiked Suilven that day with Gus and Gwen and so we met up with him after our hikes and he very kindly brought us some of the @lochinverlarder pies on his way past (Al had seen it mentioned on @black.crag YouTube) and I have to say by far the best pies I’ve ever had and I’m pretty hyped they deliver 😅🙌🏻🎉 we followed it up with a trip to a local beach, fire pit and a good run around with the dogs to see our friend off. It was a very wholesome day, I honestly never wanted to leave.

Every photographer has their favourite location, and if I had to pick one, Assynt would be mine - especially this view. The range of scenery here offers an endless wealth of photographic opportunities. From the striking, sculpted peaks of Stac Pollaidh and Quinag to the majestic, towering summit of Suilven, and then beautiful and empty sandy beaches that contrast against the backdrop of lochs, heathland and hills. I was very fortunate to have an incredible sky on this particular visit with pockets of warm light dotting the landscape.

A quick walk up Stac Polliadh was a must as the afternoon light looked promising. The peaks of Assynt have many sandstone pinnacles, with the "Lobster Claw" being one of the most iconic. Though it once featured another rock formation, erosion slowly took hold and it collapsed. Previous visits had been marred by unfavourable light, so I was eager to capture the warmth illuminating the foreground coupled with background drama.
