April Again - Book 3 Judy Blume- Just As Long As We're Together Judy Blume books fill my heart with joy. They remind me of childhood, growing up and are a resounding success due to the author really understanding children. I remember reading most, if not all, of her books at a stage of growing up when I really needed them. She spoke to children and young people through her characters. We empathised with them and understood them. The problems they were having, we were having. She also taught us that sometimes problems can't be solved. In this book, published in 1987, we find 3 main characters but the book is centrally narrated by Stephanie Hirsch. She's thirteen, moving house, her parents are separating, she's just started middle school and on top of all that she's going through the normal trials and tribulations of any teenager. This book shows you how hard it is to be a teenager but that you are not alone. Oh how I love this book. I've read it countless times. Now, re-reading it, it's dated due to the Internet. Teenage life was really different in 1987, but it's resounding themes are the same. Last week @bantambooksuk announced they were publishing an adult follow up novel to @jacquelinewilson_hq's Girls quartet and you better believe I pre-ordered it before the end of the day. Jacqueline Wilson's books ARE my childhood pretty much, my copies of Double Act and The Lottie Project were practically falling apart because I read them so often and I don't think my copies of the Girls series faired much better! I cannot wait to find out what happened to Ellie, Magda and Nadine but I really want to re-read the originals before I get to the rest of their story so I broke my self imposed book buying ban to get some second hand copies from @wob.group (all 4 for £10.50, can't complain!) and I plan to enjoy a hit of sweet nostalgia, re-reading them before Think Again is published in September. I'm so excited!

Alot of people compared this to a retelling of "Mulan" and while I do see the similarities, its really more of "Mulan" meets "The Emperor's New Clothes". Lim is a marvellous storyteller and the world-building is gorgeous. I didnt really appreciate the ambiguous names. But, maybe the author put more thought to it than I imagine? While the beginning is good, the second half delves into the romance in a way that the story did not really need. But maybe that is what sells? I read this at a time where I read a number of fantasy works by Asian authors like Sue Lynn Tan, Axie Oh and more so while this was entertaining, it was not particularly memorable or outstanding. Will I read the sequel? Maybe. Will I read her next work?
