Picked up this nice little 5th growth on a whim in Paris and while I ended up overpaying a bit it delivered 🍷🍇 it is arguably in its infancy still, and probably needed a few more years to shine, but it was very enjoyable. First impressions were of a young wine with grippy tannins, a fair bit of new oak but not enough to throw the balance off. This gave way to notes of anise seed, liquorice, herbaceous notes, olive tapenade and blackcurrants. The finish was decently long and classic Bordeaux, consistent with what I expect from a high quality wine as a fifth growth ought to be, yet still not quite as refined and delicate as some of its fellow fifth growth competitors.

Natürlich hat auch Österreich in Sachen Spargelweinen etwas mitzuschnabeln. Auch hier schöpfen wir wieder aus dem Vollen. Die Steiermark liefert uns hierbei nicht nur eine Rebsorte, sondern bedient sich für einen Wein bei 7 Rebsorten. Macht ja auch irgendwie Sinn: schließlich verbindet ein „Gemischter Satz“ das Beste aus allen Rebsorten; und das trifft auch auf den „Sarmat“ zu. Nie zu viel, nie zu überladen, dabei aber unglaublich frisch, komplex und mit der fürs @weingutneumeister typisch rauchigen Mineralität. Man könnte auch von der eierlegenden Wollmilchsau sprechen; aber dann treten wir wohl unseren Veganer etwas auf den Schlips 😊 Das Burgenland ist bekannt für die rote Rebsorte Blaufränkisch. Weil wir von frühlingshaften Bedingungen ausgegangen sind, als wir die Weine zur Spargelzeit auserkoren haben, fiel unsere Wahl auf die filigrane, frische Variante und nicht auf die eher winterlich üppige Form der komplexen Rebsorte. With a mandatory stop for bone marrow and escargot, a good wine is called for 🍷🍇🇫🇷 While this proved not to be the best pairing for either, it was a nicely made blend of 40% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 20% Carignan. The cuvée is aged for 10 months: 10% in foudre, 30% in demi-muids and 60% in concrete vats. On the nose it offered loads of ripe red fruit and hints of chocolate and spice, which also carried over to the palate. The it was well textured and the relatively high alcohol content of 15% abv was a surprise as it did not feel the slightest bit hot.
2015 Matervini Malbec Finca, 100% Malbec from Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. This is a powerhouse of flavor and concentration, even at nearly a decade old. Sourced from vines planted in the late 1930s at 3,200 feet of altitude, this wine showcases the exceptional aging potential of Argentinian Malbecs. Deep purple in color, the wine boasts floral aromas, ripe blackberries, and plums. Full bodied and firm, with silky tannins, the palate reveals notes of dark cherry, licorice, black pepper, and dark chocolate, culminating in a medium velvety finish. With its remarkable structure and complexity, this wine can easily be cellared for another 3+ years, where it will continue to evolve gracefully. A true gem for Malbec enthusiasts, Bodega Matervini is a project that began in 2008 by partners Santiago Achával and Roberto Cipresso who devoted this new winery entirely to the production of Malbec wines. They source their grapes from the diverse geologies found in the Pedriel, Canota Valley, Las Heras and Piedras Viegas in Mendoza and Valles Calchaquíes and Yacochuya in Salta. Brrrr … 🥶 … was war das denn für ein Wochenende? Wir müssen jetzt erstmal die Eiszapfen vom Korkenzieher abschlagen, uns warme Gedanken machen und die kalten Temperaturen mit einem Glas Wein wegspülen. Hoch die Hände Wochenende 😊 Aber was macht man bei so einem grauslig kalt-nassen Aprilwetter, wie es uns bevorsteht? Wir hätten da schon eine Idee: Wie wäre es mit der kulinarischen Gönnung? Dabei spielt das Wetter nämlich keine Rolle. Perfekt um sich mal durch die heimischen Restaurants zu testen, sich dort das schaurige Wetter schön zu trinken und kulinarisch aus dem Vollen zu schöpfen. & wir wären nicht der WeinGerg, wenn wir nicht auch einen Geheimtipp parat hätten. Wobei: geheim ist das @leopolds_tegernsee wirklich nicht mehr, aber das Bistro in Rottach direkt in der Nachbarschaft des WeinFachHandels eures Vertrauens ist einfach zu gemütlich, als das wir es nicht jeden ans Herz legen, der genau wie wir auch immer auf der Jagd nach hochwertigen Speisen in Verbindung mit feinen Weinen ist. & uneigennützig, wie wir nun mal sind 😉 haben wir uns ins Bistro begeben und die Küche auf ihre Saisontauglichkeit geprüft: Klar, es gab Spargel mit Hollandaise, Kartoffeln und Schinken. Das allein war schon eine Offenbarung. Das wir uns dazu natürlich auch ein gutes Flascherl Wein gegönnt haben, müssen wir wohl nicht extra erwähnen: als große Grüner Veltliner Liebhaber haben wir uns zum Gericht für den GV Kamptal vom @weingutfredloimer entschieden und was soll man sagen: passte einfach wie die berühmte Faust aufs Auge. Leichtes Pfefferl hat noch nie einer Speise geschadet, macht den GV im Allgemeinen zu einem super Speisenbegleiter. Frisch, unaufgeregt fruchtig mit einem gaumenfüllenden Finish, dazu leichtfüßelnd tänzelnd… so wie wir uns einen GV verstellen. Der Spargel ist, wie bereits erwähnt, sehr flexibel bei der Partnerwahl, hat sich auch gerne vom Veltliner umspülen lassen. Wir würden sagen: that´s a match! Also zieht euch die Gummistiefel und den Wintermantel an und macht euch auf ins Leopolds, testet euch durch die leckere Speisekarte und gönnt euch ein gutes Flascherl Wein dazu … oder 2! Einheimische voran! Naja, zumindest im übertragenen Sinne! 😀 Die Runde unserer Spargelweine wird von unseren Tegernseern eröffnet, … zumindest 2 Vertretern davon! Der Tegernseerhof aus der Wachau liefert uns hierfür den Rosé Federspiel und leitet damit sozusagen auch ein wenig die Sommerzeit ein, auch wenn das Wetter davon noch nicht allzu viel mitbekommen hat. Wir sind in der Hinsicht ja schon immer eher auf der frühen Seite und lassen dem Rosé mehr als nur die heiße Jahreszeit, um sich zu behaupten…man muss aber zu unserer Verteidigung auch zugeben: ihr zieht fröhlich bei unserer Anti-Rosé-nur-im-Sommer-Einstellung mit und lasst auch ohne Temperaturen über 30 Grad die rosafarbenen Traubensäfte in euer Körbchen hüpfen! Wir haben den Rosé vor allem deswegen auserkoren, weil er gerade zur Spargel-Fisch-Kombi bestens harmoniert. Im Selbsttest hat sich das auch bestätigt. Das Bioweingut St. Quirinus gesellt sich in die Tegernseer Runde mit dem Weißburgunder „Solt“ hinzu. Spargel und Weißburgunder haben ohnehin schon immer sehr gut gematched, warum also das Winning Team verändern? Zumal der Solt hier in eigenen Reihen, als einer der Lieblings-Pinot Biancos angesehen wird; die Person möchte jedoch gerne anonym bleiben, nicht dass sich hier jemand beeinflusst fühlt. 😁 Senf gibt´s natürlich auch wieder! Auch wir sind im Spargel-Game mehr wie nur angekommen und nutzen so ziemlich jede Möglichkeit Gerichte mit der feinen Stange zu komplementieren. Wir waren ein wenig stolz, im Rückblick auf die Entwicklung der letzten beiden Wochen, was den Frühling angeht. Hatte ja auch ziemlich gut funktioniert mit dem „Frühling anlocken“, oder was meint ihr? Aber kaum ist ein Fünkchen Stolz in uns aufgekeimt, hat uns die volle Breitseite des April Wetters erwischt und die positiven Vibes wieder weggespült … im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Aber Jammern hilft nichts: Dann muss der Frühling eben ein weiteres Mal im Glas stattfinden, ist schließlich auch besser als gar kein Frühling. & mit Verlaub: mit unseren letzten beiden Frühlingsweinen könnten wir sogar eine direkte Verbindung zum Sommer herzustellen. Zumindest wenn es nach dem badischen Rosé geht, dessen Farbe ja – wie jeder weiß – rein im Sommer funktioniert. (ernst nehmen auf eigene Gefahr!!!) Dazu gibt es unseren Wagramer Liebling mit Seltenheitswert: der Rote Veltliner 😉 einfach immer noch zu gut, um so unbekannt zu bleiben…und wer weiß? Vielleicht schaffen wir den Absatz der Rebsorte durch unsere positive Bewertung so anzuheben, dass sich wieder mehr Winzer aus Wagram der Rebsorte annehmen. Happy Monday! Weiter geht´s mit unserer Mission den Frühling an uns zu binden. Heute darf sich ein deutsch-französisches Mixpärchen in Sachen Frühlingstauglichkeit beweisen. Wobei beweisen hier gar nicht von Nöten ist, denn die beiden schreien schon von weitem „Hurra, Hurra – der Lenz ist da“ 😉 Die fränggische Scheurebe war tatsächlich der erste Wein, der uns in den Sinn kam, als wir das Thema „Frühling“ fixiert haben. Das Ding macht richtig Laune, selbst wenn mal das Wetter diese eher versucht in den Keller fallen zu lassen 😆 (was glücklicherweise derzeit kein Thema ist) Nicht weniger gute Laune versprechend ist der Malbec von der Loire, den die meisten wahrscheinlich eher mit dem Südamerikanischen Kontinent und nicht mit der französischen Weinbauregion in Verbindung bringen. Aber wie so ziemlich alles, was mit Wein zu tun hat, so hat auch der Malbec seinen Ursprung in Frankreich… und selbst im Inland so viele Synonyme, dass man manchmal gar nicht weiß von was eigentlich die Rede ist.
