Laura Carter, along with her husband Brendan have quickly emerged as the most dynamic winemaking duo in the Adelaide Hills – In their words they seek to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines.” Unico Zelo streaked onto the wine scene somewhat comet-like, when the duo launched into their own wine label in the Adelaide Hills, more or less fresh from university, where they met. And it wasn’t just wine. The Carters also opened their trailblazing distillery, Applewood, turning out spirits, amaro, liqueurs and limoncello, as well as a perfume brand, Nømad. These are impressive and ambitious people who are energy packed just like their wines. The 2023 vintage of their lip smacking delicious Fresh A.F. is a blend of Nero d’Avola fruit 68% from Barmera, Riverland, and 32% from Adelaide Hills. 3% of the blend is Zibibbo - a Sicilian indigenous aromatic white varietal that adds just enough lift to the final wine. Whole berries are fermented by wild ferment, with natural malolactic fermentation. Fermented and aged in Stainless Steel to accentuate the freshness. Only the most minimal amount of SO2 is added at bottling. Unico Zelo acknowledges that their grapes are grown on Ngawait & Peramangk Country. How could we forget to talk about the food in Sicily? As an island in the Mediterranean, you’ve got some of the freshest seafood around. But also, as Italy’s breadbasket, ancient grains billow across the rolling hills. Wild boar, grazing cattle, and a decadant variety of meats make for charcuterie dreams. Groves of fruit and olive trees abound. Don’t get us started on the tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Then there’s the influence from close proximity to northern Africa that gives Sicilian food a distinctive flavor all its own. Did you know that coos coos reins supreme as one of the top carby dishes from the western shore? Not pasta. But elsewhere, the pasta sure is good. Ditto the pizza. That wheat, unlike our genetically modified Monsanto crap we have in the US, is stellar. Delicious even! Sicily’s best dish, made differently with local ingredients all over the island is Capponata, a sort of eggplant stew slow roasted with tomatoes, onions, raisins on occasion. This white grape grows almost exclusively in Spain’s Rueda DO (within the region of Castilla y Leon), though it’s originally from North Africa. 🍋Its citrus, grapefruit, melon, fennel, and almond characteristics often earn it the description of Sauvignon Blanc crossed with Pinot Grigio. ✨One major difference is that Verdejo can be drunk both young (joven) or aged, where it can develop body and flavors of rich Marcona almonds. In the Sicilian countryside, not but an hour outside Palermo, is an agriturismo cooperative of over 30 organic farmers run by some very lovely and generous people. Without further adieu, we’re excited to introduce to you the inspiring Valdibella project. Founded in Comporeale in 1998, the idea was to develop an organization connecting a strong agricultural and rural vocation to troubled young people, pairing them with training, skills, and work that was sustainable, fair, and equitable. Valdibella aims to restore dignity to farmers, promoting concrete actions against commercial and labor exploitation, and supporting farmers towards organic conversion that focuses on biodiversity and native crops. There is real power in this collective approach, a model of change for Sicily, and beyond. Today, the Valdibella project produces not just wine, but vegetables and legumes, almonds and olive oil, and some of the best tasting wheat and dry pasta we’ve ever had. We were extremely fortunate to get to stay at the Valdibella estate during our visit which coincided with grape harvest. We got to see the winery in full action as bins full of grapes arrived, we tasted through their selections of wines and food products with a delicious Sicilian farm lunch, chatting up Nino - their jovial winemaker. The highlight was an early morning trek to harvest Catarratto and grapes for this wine - Perricone. In an adorable exchange, Ben handed vineyard owner Massimilano Solano his VP business card, and he held it stumped at how to respond at first, then plucked a juicy cluster of perricone off the nearest vine and said with a smile, “and here’s my card.” Doesn’t get more Sicilian than that. Valdibella makes its only rosato - the Dhyana, from these grapes. We can vouch, personally, that they are hand-picked then transported to the hillside winery in baskets, where they are de-stemmed, crushed and then soaked for a few hours before pressing. An intense rosé, but has the aroma and flavor of ripe strawberries ever been more distinct in a wine? You must try it as part of our current Waddle release, or from our online bottle shop. Ornellaia DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This 2010. was showing exceptionally well. , great fruit integrated oak. Perfect to drink now but can last 10+ years . Ornellaia was established by Marchese Lodovico Antinori with the help of a highly talented consultant—Hungarian winemaker Tibor Gál. He was also the winemaker at Aia Vecchia which has great value wines. With the planet warming at an eye opening pace, Sicily is a hotbed (literally) of possible climate change resistance. Here we have grape varietals that are well adapted to immense heat and are exceptionally water efficient. That said, it is not immune to the challenges. Nearly every producer we visited during our trip last fall lamented about a loss of 50% of their normal vineyard yield. In some places it was up to (gasp!) 90%. A horrifying spring deluge flooded the island for six weeks throughout April and May, washing away the baby wine blooms with it. Following that the island suffered through temperatures that reached up to 120 degrees in July. Much of the grapes that survived were severely sunburned or withered into raisins. We were lucky enough to visit during their harvest, and seeing that in person was revelatory. But, many people we talked to were downright sad about the amount of grapes being brought into the winery. The 2023 vintage will be interesting to say the least, with limited quantities, there might not be much to go around, let alone exported. While climate change is not going away, there’s hope! Take Perricone, a favorite among locals - a more uncommon black grape variety originating from western Sicily which is usually cultivated low to the ground. It has spherical berries with very waxy, thick, dark blue skin, and exhibited a lot less of the mildew and sun damage that plagued much of the 2023 vintage elsewhere on the island. Could this be the new climate change resistant varietal we’ll be seeing a lot more of around the world? Often made into a red wine characterized by a solid and soft tannic base, a good alcohol content and long persistence, but some producers make it into a delectable rosato. The island of Sicily’s location, smack dab in the middle of the Med Sea, has made it easily conquered by literally everyone. The poor saps who lived there had to learn Greek, Latin, Arabic, French (the Normans), Spanish, and eventually Italian when Italy became unified (honestly, not that long ago - 1861!) The upside of being at the pointy end of every civilization’s sword is a completely singular cultural ethos, layered with the best influences from everyone. Take Palermo, the lively and indelible capital city, where the strata of architectural styles are a tapestry: Corinthian columns, Moorish domes, and Baroque facades abounding. Elsewhere, there’s near-intact Greek temples in Agrigento (better preserved than anything like it in Greece), Roman mosaics uncovered in gargantuan villas, there’s crusader castles, and entire towns rebuilt in Baroque splendor after earthquakes took them down in Noto & Ragusa. Gebbia Frappato Vittoria > Sicilia > 🇮🇹 100% Frappato, 2021 The most delicate of Sicily’s reds, Frappato grows well in the clay-based Terra Rossa and sandy soils, where it delivers perfumed aromas of fresh raspberries, candied sour cherry, fragrant tobacco and blossoming flowers. While most Frappato grows under the heavy Sicilian sun, the wines made from it are generally light, buoyant, and friendly - like this one. Gebbia is a collaborative effort between friends focusing on delicious, economical wines, all sourced from certified organic vineyards. All the wines are produced as 100% pure grape expressions with minimal intervention and wine making in order to allow the characteristics of the varietal to shine through. Each of their bottles feature different marionette characters, further linking the wines to the island’s traditional culture. Winemaker Vito Lauria runs the operation in the Northwest of Sicily in a town called Alcamo, less than one hour west of Palermo. The fruit for this wine comes from Vittoria, where Frappato grapes ripen to a shade of purplish-blue so intense they almost glow. That deep color comes through in the wine too, a vivid shade that mirrors the wine’s powerful fruit aromas and flavor. While most Frappato grows under the heavy Sicilian sun, the wines made from it are generally light, buoyant, and friendly. Vito Lauria works to bring out the best, purest expression of all his wines, with a gentle press, a cool fermentation to preserve freshness, and eight months age in concrete. When the Eurasian and African plates collide (still happening, in fact), the fracture and overlap has helped form Sicily’s countless microclimates and variegated soils over nearly 100 million years. Imbued with highly diverse soils, Sicilian earth is volcanic on Etna to sandy in Marsala and clay over limestone in Vittoria. Flavia Rebellious Wines ‘Tìade’ Sparkling Catarratto Etna Norte > Sicily > IT Catarratto, 2021 Honoring the legacy of their forefathers, sister and brother duo Flavia and Giacomo blend past and present with dedication to native Sicilian varietals and dare we say, an air of rebelliousness in the air? Always pushing boundaries and daring new techniques with these ancient grapes. Here, on the side of an active volcano, these hard-working siblings practice heroic agriculture in real time. When traveling throughout Italy, almost every producer makes small batch bottles of bubbles with their own local flair, this is one of those wines - refreshing, fun, and delicious. Goditi questo! The grapes for this wine are organically treated, hand-harvested, native yeast fermented, and then lightly fined/filtered. Charmat Method in autoclave for 6 months to create the bubbles, not disgorged so might encounter a little sediment. Lastly, it’s bottled right on the volcano, then 2 months of bottle refinement before release. Personality: This sparkling Catarratto is light, fresh, and though not quite explosive, it’s clearly volcanic. The aromas are lively with hints of orange blossom, fresh-cut citrus, and jasmine. Its delicate bubbles deliver a palate with notes of honeycrisp apple that flows into an elegant grassy, herbal, lava-driven finish. The bubbles are delicate, and the flavor is astoundingly complex! Pine needles, oyster shells, green apples, and orange blossoms with lemon/lime acidity. Harmony: A versatile wine that can be paired with anything from sushi to eggplant risotto. Had a truly magical time today down in the Willamette valley. Ben’s former wine production instructor Bill Snyder from the Northwest Wine Academy (along with his wife Ann) launched a wine project outside of Portland last year - Decision Hill Wines. He invited us to join in a Sound Bath experience in the cellar where the wines-in-progress are hanging out. A sound healing artist using singing bowls, bells, feathers, and a gong led a meditation into vibration, which, as we found out in the post-bath tasting elevated the wines to a new dimension. You could really feel the energy infusion from the power of sound in the wines and we’re excited to try to bring you this buzzed juice in a summer release after it’s bottled. MARCH 2024 - WINE CLUB - HIGHLIGHT Domaine LeSeurre's Semi Dry Riesling grapes are sourced from a clay vineyard which contributes to the richness and fruitfulness of the grapes. These grapes are left on the vine approximately 10 days longer than the grapes used for our Dry Riesling allowing for optimal ripening. The Riesling juice undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks, while the wine is on the lees it is stirred once a month for 10 months, a process known as bâtonnage sur lies. This method helps enhance the complexity of flavors and aromas resulting in a nuanced structure in the final product. Further more, this wine undergoes a cool temperature fermentation which enables the yeast to ferment the sugars slowly ensuring a steady carbon dioxide level due to the extended fermentation process. This meticulous approach to wine making results in a Riesling of exceptional quality, showcasing a balance of flavors and aromas that exemplifies our Finger Lake's terroir. Bura ‘Plavac Fresh’ 🍇 Plavac Mali, 2022 Pelješac > Dalmatia > Croatia 🇭🇷 An exceptionally fresh red by one of Dalmatia’s top producers Mare Bura, a Croatian Sensation of a woman winemaker. Plavic Fresh is spontaneously fermented Plavac Mali (an indigenous variety related to Zinfandel) and aged in stainless steel tank, from organic grapes. Bottled unfined, unfiltered. Notes of blueberry, wild plum, and cherry smack with saline acidity. A perfect red for seafood. Yes, you heard that right. The Bura family has been growing grapes and making wine on the Pelješac peninsula, jutting off Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, since 1410 - sixteen generations! But, only since the fall of the Yugoslav Communist era have they been able to focus on quality. In those time, 60% of their harvest had to be turned over to government co-ops interested in quantity. These days, young Mare Bura is making the wine, and her brother Niko manages the vines - fully organic, having taken over from their uncle. The winery and cellar are on the ground floor of their family house, a true artisan craft wine. Located about 170 kilometres northwest of Madrid, in a gentle valley formed by the Duero River, one of the world’s greatest wine rivers, sales of wines from Rueda have been skyrocketing. While the region’s 75 wineries produce both red and white wines, 98% of production is white wines, with one grape in particular leading the pack – verdejo (“vurr-day-ho”). With a history in the region dating back 1,000 years, verdejo has been used in winemaking for centuries but its popularity was reborn in the 1970s. SOME HISTORY - We have long been fans of Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley, and over the years have searched for local Chenin Blanc grapes to make a crisp, dry wine from this classic varietal. We discovered an ideal vineyard in Clarksburg California, home to the vast majority of Chenin Blanc grapes grown in California. This vineyard is a bit southwest of Sacramento, in the Sacramento River delta, where cool breezes from the San Francisco Bay cool the grapes creating hot afternoons and cool evenings that make for ideal conditions to grow Chenin Blanc. We use a 500-gallon egg-shaped concrete fermentation vessel to highlight the minerality of the grapes, and the results have exceeded our expectations. This year's vintage will not last long, so please get it while you can! We'll make more next year... What a fun lunch time Master Class with renown Spanish winemaker and visionary Raúl Pérez. Operating in Bierzo, a region of NW Spain along the famed Camino de Santiago, Raúl has cultivated an impressive operation in a centuries old church. With the utmost respect for the land, and a minimalist approach in the cellar, he produces very special wines which was fun and insightful to taste side by side as he narrated along. Bierzo is particularly special because 2/3 of the vineyards are over 100 years old. No wine region in the world can boast that many hectares with centurion vines. By happy accident, he discovered a unique flor yeast which covers his open top amphorae in a thick film yeast. It sounds unappealing, but this unusual microbial ecosystem helps preserve the wine, keeps it from oxidizing, and allows him to limit the use of sulfur dioxide, aka sulfites. It also helps soften the tannins on his red wines which spend ~2 months macerating on the skins. We got to chat with Raúl a bit and it was neat to see his face light up when he saw our Vinos Pingüinos logo, a Spanish name! He even invited us to come visit, so maybe we will! Hopefully, we’ll get some of his wines soon for the shop.
