⚰️⚰️⚰️Book Review ⚰️⚰️⚰️ 🦚Genre: Horror 🦚Themes: Vampires and Funerals 🦚Page #: 265 🦚 Author: Paul Tremblay 🦚Series: No Synopsis: Art comes up with a new idea to start a pallbearer’s club to assist at funerals where the deceased don’t have anyone. At the most Art expects a kid or two from school to join but then an unknown girl shows up. Mercy, this mystery girl, has to be the coolest person he’s ever seen but Art will soon realize there’s more to this girl than meets the eye. Review: I really loved the concept of this book but I’m sort of iffy when it comes to the execution. The story was just kind meh. Art is insufferable. He’s lazy, uninspired and blames the world for his shortfalls. Since the bulk of the story is from his perspective, I just couldn’t get into it. Alternatively, I like Mercy, she’s fun. If it wasn’t for her commentary in the book it would have totally fallen flat. The last book I read by Tremblay was so good so maybe I’m just being harsh because he set my standards for his writing so high. Though it was cool to see a reference to A Head Full of Ghosts in this one. Stadt der Liebe, Lichter und Laster Sie ist das Setting meines Debuts, das Zuhause meines Protagonisten Leo. ✨ Heute ist die Stadt wahnsinnig schön, spannend und immer einen Besuch wert. Zu Leos Zeit war sie das auch, aber Paris 1789 ist für etwas ganz anderes bekannt: Für die Revolution Ich bin ein kleiner Geschichtsnerd und mochte schon immer Storys, die in interessanten Zeitperioden spielen. Bewusst habe ich das Paris der Revolution aber gar nicht ausgewählt, es kam zusammen mit der Inspiration für Leo und seine Story. Sie gehören untrennbar zusammen und plötzlich habe ich Bücher geschrieben, die dort spielen, obwohl ich eigentlich nur Dark Fantasy schreiben wollte und nicht Geschichtsromane. Die sind nämlich fürchterlich zu recherchieren… besonders, wenn man versucht, es halbwegs gut zu machen. Paris hat sich während der Revolution und in den 200 Jahren danach extrem verändert. Straßen und Häuser wurden abgerissen und neu gebaut, auch Namen der Plätze und Straßen haben sich immer wieder geändert. Ob es also etwas schon 1789 gab und auch so genannt wurde, ist erstaunlich schwer zu recherchieren. Und da dachte ich, ich würde "nur" eine dramatische düsterromantische Story über ein paar hübsche Vampire schreiben… Paris und die Revolution sind sowas wie Nebencharaktere in Leos Story. Die Orte, die er besucht haben Bedeutung, für ihn und für die meisten, die sich wenigstens ein bisschen mit der Stadt auskennen. Wer hat nicht schon von Notre Dame oder der Seine gehört und denkt dabei an irgendwelche Filme, Spiele, Bücher oder eigene Reisen? Ich wollte die Atmosphäre der Stadt einfangen, sie durch Leos Augen erlebbar machen. Allerdings auf eine Weise, die nicht so oft gezeigt wird wie der Eifelturm durch die zuckrige rosarote Brille. Paris 1789 war düster, gefährlich und lasterhaft, aber damals schon schön, spannend und abwechslungsreich. But when Mia finds them, she discovers that instead of being the hunter, she might be the prey. To escape, she’ll have to reckon with her mom’s harrowing past and confront a painful truth: they may be more alike than she ever imagined. This book was a solid continuation of the first novel, and it picked right up where the last one ended. I enjoyed getting to know Mia more on her quest to get answers. Just like the first book, the writing style is poignant and emotional. I think that in the first novel we just got a taste of the Saras and what the condition meant, in this book, we got to do a deep dive into it. I think that this was a unique take on a vampire novel, and I appreciated the differences while relishing in the familiar. I also loved that we got even more information about Mia and her mom’s relationship, it was great to get more sides of it. This book touched on some heavy themes though I felt that they were handled well and with care. The imagery was great as well and I felt like I was with the characters on their journey. I wouldn’t recommend reading this book if you haven’t read Night’s Edge yet as it won’t make as much sense. Review - First Light by Liz Kerin (Out 4/23) I had really loved Night’s Edge so I was really excited for its sequel, First Light. There are some books that just speak to my teenage self and Liz Kerin’s sad girl vampire novels hit the right spot. Kerin’s writing is full of raw emotions without being overly dramatic. I loved the expansion of the fresh take on vampires and the post-pandemic world she had created in Night’s Edge. The characters were built well and easy to relate to. I really loved the juxtaposition of coping with an abusive parent and searching for an identity with a culty vampire story. It also was quite the heart pounder towards the end and had a few jaw dropping reveals. This one is perfect for fans of strong female characters, vampires and complex LGBTQ+ relationships. Book 28 — in 2024 Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I feel like I need a medal after finishing this 🥇😂 … it took over a month and it was tough going.
